Why is it that some individuals don't care for the word 'play'?

WyrdRich -> RE: PLAY (4/14/2006 3:39:24 PM)

         I think "play" is a great word to describe it.  It's supposed to be fun right?

cloudboy -> RE: PLAY (4/14/2006 4:03:43 PM)

I knew a Domme who prefered the term "work" instead. I actually think that's a pretty good experience of what a sub undergoes in terms of maintaining composure, endurance, and discipline while "in service" or "at play."

Work connoted something more serious to her, and it connoted something more demanding to a sub. It also carries with it terms of responsibility, committment, and openness --- theoretically all requirements of being a sub -- and three things a sub could devote himself to.

My guess is that to them it sounds too frivolous and they believe that life, the universe, and everything is much more serious.

To me. . . a heart attack is serious. . . life is fun. . .

Eat drink and be merry (or Mary if it suits you) for tomarrow we may die.

Just say "whatevevah" and move on.

Best,

Because they take themselves and life WAY too seriously.

MistressSassy66 -> RE: PLAY (4/14/2006 9:28:18 PM)

I'm not fond of the word play when I see it used by those not serious or its used to imply a sexual encounter,I am not about sex,so when its put to Me that way,I get offended.Otherwise its just a word used.

My preferred words are Session or Scene(scene sometimes can be put in such a way that it doesnt sound much better than play).

To each their own.

I use the terms play, scene and session to talk about different intensity levels. Play is for fun when my inner child is allowed to run free, laugh, tease, tickle and have a grand time. Scene is usually more intense, generally because the risk goes up. An example would be a cutting or hook suspension. Session I reserve for when I'm on top and just being my sadistic self. When I'm in full blown 'I want to HURT you' mode, it's deadly serious and I rarely laugh, giggle or 'play' when I'm feeling that way.  75% of the S/m time, Himself and I are playing.. the other 25% we're in a scene but we are always in an M/s relationship.. and that's not play nor a game.. it just is.

I honestly don't know why some dislike 'play' as a term so much. Maybe because it reminds people of acting, or they are only in serious scene mode, or hell, I don't know. I know that Himself sweats a lot, and puts forth a lot of energy sometimes, so maybe 'work' is an appropriate term to use, but after all these years, I doubt I could get used to it.

I haven't a clue... but it would be nice to see more responses from people that don't like to use the term....  It would seem to be the best ones to ask and recieve an answer from

Sensualips -> RE: PLAY (4/15/2006 5:46:00 AM)

When I first became involved I did not like the word play.  There was no deep reason - it just sounded dorky to me. I didn;t really have a better word choice though. As time passed and so many people around me used it, it became a common accepted term for me and now I use it all the time.

I do too.  Though I think I use it less formally.. aka don't hold it against me if I call a scene.. a session.. or a session a scene.

To me:
Play = Fun times. Less structured. More of a fun-4-all.
Scene = Preplanned. May contain role play (like some kind of scene from a movie). All activities discussed and agreed upon before hand. Structured.
Session = Usually reserve for training issues, punishments, or the like. Less structured than a scene, but with a serious tone so isn't "play".

I don't have any problems with "play" or "session" .. though I used to have a problem with "scene-ing", as I don't like "acting" within a personal relationship.  However, I've grown to see it purpose and benefits in a different light.

Anyway.. thats just my thoughts on it.

MstrssPassion -> RE: PLAY (4/16/2006 8:50:36 AM)

I have known people off & on over the years that refused to use the term 'play'. They would go on & on about how what they did was not play & that play was more along the lines of describing something childish & frivolous...

Well, as time went on I came to find out that they were also of the opinion that their sh*t didn't stink! [:D]

I myself do not get hung up on terms, titles or any of this... my focus is effectively communicating my idea to others. I will discover what words others use to express their ideas & I will reveal to them what words I use to express my ideas... along they way we discover what the other is wishing to express regardless of the different words we used in the beginning.

As for 'play'... I use it from time to time. I also use scene & session. The term I use most often is interaction.

Interaction defined: mutual or reciprocol action (which denotes consent)

Dustyn -> RE: PLAY (4/16/2006 10:51:59 AM)

a vanilla friend of mine, who overherad me talking on the phone one day about playing, asked me what game I was talking about... I think that, somewhat, sums up what most people think about the word play, but that's just me...

WyrdRich -> RE: PLAY (4/16/2006 12:06:12 PM)

         I'd call that another point in favor of using the word.  I can ask my folks here in town to keep my dog overnight because my wife and I are going to "go play in LA."  I'm not lying and they put their own interpretation on the word.

       I get a dogsitter and they stay as blissfully ignorant of what we are into as they want to be.

MsPoetress -> RE: PLAY (4/16/2006 12:18:25 PM)

Well the reason I posted this was to find out what people thought on the word 'play'.

I saw someone post something on a message-board and in the post she used the word 'play'. Someone came in and replied to her post. They did not answer her post, but instead ridiculed her for using the word 'play'. Which I found absurd

I agree it is just a term.

Ahhh. . . . the 'proper terminology' Nazis.

Hmmm. . . I just put them in the same catagory as the grammer Nazis and the spelling Nazis and the "there is a right way to do this Nazis" and then those people who refer to themselves as "real" or "true" (they are not Nazis, they are just silly).

It may be that they do not have a life and so need to spend their time insulting others instead of enjoy the wonderful and strange world that we live in.  It is the only way that they can feel fulfilled.

Pooh-pooh to them.

As long as you and your partner(s) know what is being refered to, well, then that is what is really important.

Best,

LaMalinche
