Myself looking on the web for  home made instruction on how to make various electro stimulation devices came across an interesting website with an interesting idea within the realms of electrosex. The instruction is to use anyone's home hifi and instead of the music being sent to the speakers, well, it goes where more fun can be had and one can receive stimulation via music which might put a very different slant on what one's favourite music is.

But from the website there is the suggestion that a computer can be used and with it sound files, which the website provides, sound files that have been designed to stimulate the most.

That looks like a LOT of fun!

Well I went to reply to another thread about getting to try estim before you buy, found that it was closed and that I was supposed to post here: http://www.collarchat.com/m_3301201/tm.htm so here goes....

Somethingrandom, I was able to try the various high end boxes at Madam S in San Francisco before I bought mine; down the street at Stormy Leather there was a class on picking out a box later in the month. I've seen a vendor letting someone try out a tens unit at the NELA flea and there was an estim event in NYC this summer (I think it was at Paddles). Those are the opportunities I've seen to get a look at estim so you don't have to buy sight unseen. I don't know what there is in DC but I suspect that you could find an opportunity.

To answer your question, tens units feel very different from a violet wand. If you can't manage to demo one, you don't need to spend hundreds just to see how they feel. There are extremely cheap tens units out there, here are a couple I found for around $30 in my 1min. google search:

Yeah, I am looking at factory reconditioned ex hospital TENS units on fleabay at the moment, but I do have an extreme cheapy, bought for a quid at a quid shop, since modified by me to be more effective, but it lacks adequate control, hence my search again. As I suffer with reduced sensitivity, ( not ticklish, high pain tolerance and generally insensitive skin), I am finding only electrostimulation to be the only stimulation that works for me.

The idea of the website I linked in the OP is an interesting one, and has given me food for thought, as I have also found instruction on the net to adapt even an electronic keyboard, which puts an even more interesting dimension on the play, but I suppose a step down from using a music creation program on a computer, cybersex.
