I am so tempted, it's my biggest wish list item at Amazon.  I can see a ton of advantage and could easily talk myself into parting with some cash to own one.  My question - do you have one?  Do you love it?  Any buyer's remorse?

Don't have one, but they look great since I love to read about four different books at once.

KatyLied -> RE: Do You Have A Kindle? (7/30/2010 8:51:04 PM)

Yep, and they just reduced the price of the brand new latest generation. I usually read 2 books at a time, can't imagine doing 3 or 4 at a time!

Sadly it's well down on the priority list in life. Paperbacks do just fine.

~Fast Reply~

I have a free kindle app on my iPad and I'm exporing it. It feels really weird to not turn pages but, on the plus side, TONS of the romance novels that I like to rot my brain with are free to download.

Overall, I still prefer a physical book. However, it's nice to have mutiple books in this one little thing that I can bring on a plane without having to play tetris to fit everything in. Plus with the kindle app I can read romance novels at work and nobody knows that I'm reading steamy stuff. [:D]

I love gadgets! Thank goodness I am good at talking myself out of things I do not really need. Well there are a few exceptions....

And, btw, "real" books don't hold up real well after being dropped in the tub either[;)]

This is where hair dryers come in ... dropped more books in the bath than I care to remember.

Hey thanks for the info, folks!

Quick question, we were going to get my mom an ipod for christmas as she likes listening to audiobooks.  However, over the weekend she was introduced to the kindle and really likes it.

However, i realize kindle has a read outloud ability and the ability to upload mp3s.  Does this mean audiobooks like from audible.com?  Do you think i will be able to upload audiobooks for her to listen to also?

"Listen to Music & PodcastsTransfer MP3 files to Kindle to play as background music while you read. You can quickly and easily transfer MP3 files via USB by connecting Kindle to your computer. "

Thanks,

angel

Kindle is a wonderful tool for book readers in my opinion. You can read a bit before deciding to buy ... the prices are reasonable and the tool itself is easy to use ... By the way, if you drop book in the bath tub, well yikes, perhaps you drank too much wine if that is possible, lol ... Kindles are $139 now, a decent price ...

thornhappy -> RE: Do You Have A Kindle? (11/7/2010 6:06:42 PM)

Hi angel--

The MP3 player is still considered an "experimental" function and is pretty primitive from what I've read.  Text-to-speech has to be enabled by the publisher, there are still intellectual rights issues with that feature.

The $139 price is for the Wifi version; the more expensive one includes 3G.  I'm not always around hot spots so I'm lusting after the 3G unit....

I don't know about on the kindle, but I have a nook, and load my Audible files to the nook, and listen with headphones or (jn the car) with the speaker-conversion I use for my iPod. As a bonus, I can load my Audible files to microSD cards (and music) and swap out audible libraries at will without having to use up the device memory.

My son wants a Kindle for the holidays, and was specific about wanting a Kindle over a Nook, so I'm looking forward to seeing what the differences are between them.

hertz -> RE: Do You Have A Kindle? (11/8/2010 6:47:05 AM)

I like the smell of books, the feel of the paper, the creases and folds of the cover. Kindle wouldn't do it for me...

CallaFirestormBW -> RE: Do You Have A Kindle? (11/8/2010 7:15:19 AM)

I do, too -- I have an extensive library (over 1500 books) and re-read the books I have often. I have a number of books that aren't available in electronic format which I proceed to buy in print version as well, plus some First Edition Heinlein that, despite being ragged, yellowed, and falling apart, will have to fall to -dust- before I'll part with it.

That being said, there are distinct advantages to electronic readers -- portability (I can carry up to 150,000 books using microSD cards and my Nook), flexibility, variety (I can bring hundreds of books, magazines, etc., on a trip with me using the Nook, so I can read what I want when I want), accessibility (I can change the fonts and font sizes on my nook so that I can continue to read even when my eyes are giving me trouble from the MS, or as my vision has changed as I've gotten older)...

Books will always have a place in my home -- but electronic readers have ensconced themselves comfortably in our Library as well, and we're happy to have them there.

I'm so glad to learn about all my fellow bookworms!

I've been considering getting a Kindle. In addition to having the overflowing book problem and the can't stuff all the books into my bag when I'm traveling problem, I also have a real hard time with the older book smell. Cheap mass market paperbacks are too musty for me to read after only a few years.

Has anyone taken advantage of the 2.5 million free ebooks or is that just hype? http://www.amazon.com/gp/b/?node=2245146011

CallaFirestormBW -> RE: Do You Have A Kindle? (11/8/2010 8:48:48 AM)

Again, I'm not sure how it is for Amazon, but the free books on Nook (Barnes and Nobel) are typically classic books. I have several of my favorites on my Nook. In addition, I don't know if Amazon offers anything like this, but B&N has something called Free Book Friday. They pick a book in different genres (everything from mystery to romance to travel) and give one away every week. I've gotten some fair-to-middling books that way, and a couple of really GOOD books that way (a couple that compelled me to go right away and buy the rest of that author's work!)

I consider the free books to be a 'bonus of ownership'. I wouldn't count on them for my entire reading library, but there are some really good books out there -- and many more coming, as more and more authors and publishers embrace electronic publishing.

habonia -> RE: Do You Have A Kindle? (11/8/2010 9:22:14 AM)

I have a Kindle and I admit, I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. But I am one who reads a lot of classics (i.e. public domain books, published more than 75 years ago are available free), don't mind spending 5-10 bucks on an e-book, and re-read books a lot.

It does play mp3s, but not in the same way an ipod does (I have one of those too - different purpose, different device). You can load mp3 files (including audible files) but you cannot control play order or select music tracks, you just get the play option and then have to skip through until you get the one you want. Also the device has a smallish memory capacity (I think 2GB) which is fine to hold thousands of books but fills up very quickly if you put larger files such as mp3s on it.

As far as the Text-to-speech function, I have used it once or twice when trying to finish a non-fiction or job-related book while in the car, but it is very computer/robotic sounding and I can't imagine listening to and enjoying fiction through that function.

You can get the kindle app for the ipod touch or the ipad for free, and buy kindle books, but the LCD screen is not as good for prolonged reading. It's a trade off really, you have to decide which functionality you will use most and go from there.

Has anyone ever been spanked with a Kindle?

I rest my case.

kiwisub12 -> RE: Do You Have A Kindle? (11/8/2010 2:36:27 PM)

I was given a kindle as a gift   -  i wouldn't have bought one for myself because i love the physical feel of books, but i LOVE it!!!!!   I take it everywhere and it is so convenient.

There are books i can't get but most are available.
I have found that i spend way too much in Amazon now - *sigh*, but what a way to go.  I also like the fact that the kindle goes for up to two weeks before needing to be recharged, and the recharge cord is a universal charger - i can actually charge my cell phone with it.   Very convenient for me.

and i still have an entire room full of books [:D]

KatyLied -> RE: Do You Have A Kindle? (11/8/2010 3:24:18 PM)

Hertz:  A Kindle does not replace books, just like an iPod does not replace CDs, it is just another way of experiencing the same thing.  Also if a book is the only thing you use for spanking, you need more imagination!

camille65 -> RE: Do You Have A Kindle? (11/8/2010 7:34:47 PM)

I keep researching all the different types of e-readers, pricing them out and comparing things. However I'm not allowed one. Sighhhhhh along with a heartfelt whineeeeee. I don't have the self control to not bankrupt myself with instant books. Even with all the free books out there I'd want too many new ones.

One negative I've noticed is that I'm a very fast reader, faster than those 'pages' turn and that annoys me. It breaks up my reading too much.

However I really really want one anyway. Meanwhile I content myself with free books I can read online. There are a lot out there.

Heya I just thought of something! If Santa brings me one, does that supercede the order from my Owner not to get one? I mean.. it is Santa afterall.
