Actually, unless you can completely seal off the room that you don't want to cool, this won't really work -- whether you want to or not, you'll be cooling both rooms, and overworking the AC to do so, because the warm air from the 2nd room will be circulating into your cooled room (it's just what air of different temperatures does).
That being said, anything you can do to slow the movement of air from one room to the other (including something as simple as hanging a curtain on a shower-curtain rod put up in the doorway) will help to minimize that air-seep.
Considering your financial situation, I'd think about asking whether there are programs in your area to assist with insulating your home and helping you to find affordable cooling options. AC isn't a good choice, unless you can shell out a small fortune in electric bills.
As an alternative, you might want to consider spending your days away from the house -- maybe at the local library or a nearby public pool/recreation center. Sometimes, they even have programs to assist with transportation, etc.
