Lost another friend to Hep C - third one this summer.  I am reposting something from April.  Just get tested.  Just  get  t e s t e d.

The following is a repost of something I sent out to the BDSM Yahoo groups in my area.

In our community, attitudes about safer sex, STD's and STD testing run the gamut from total lack of awareness to total vigilance.  April is GYT month - Get Yourself Tested.  I am tempted to stand on a soapbox here, but I will simply say, very few adults are as entirely abstinent as would be required to never have any risk of exposure to STD's.  That alone seems like a good enough reason to get tested.

You can typically get a full panel of STD tests from your regular doctor.  But this isn't your only option.

Free or Low-Cost STD testing is available all over Southern California.  See the links below for help locating a testing location.

http://yourstdhelp.com/free_clinic_locator.html
http://www.hivtest.org/
http://orpheus-1.ucsd.edu/shs/aidstest.html
http://www.rivco-familycarecenters.org/std.htm
http://www.ocasf.org/hiv_testing.htm
http://www.lapublichealth.org/std/clinics.htm

Here's a fun quiz from Trojan condoms about safer-sex practices:
http://www.trojancondoms.com/Quiz.aspx?QuizId=23

What to be tested for?

It's not just about HIV.  A full panel of tests can include HIV, HEP A-B-C, HPV (genital warts), HSV (herpes), Chlamydia, Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Trichomoniasis, pubic lice/crabs, and additional conditions such as vaginitis, vaginosis, PID, and yeast infection.

Remember, not all STD's have a cure, but all can be treated - to improve/prolong your life and reduce chance of transmission to others.

Bottom line is, no one here really knows if they are disease free if they haven't been tested.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Hep C is serious. I witnessed it suck the life out of my father. He contracted Hep C back in the late 60's I believe from his druggy days.
I'm not sure when he found out he had Hep C, but he didn't tell me until much later (probably 6 years before he died). The last years of his life he tried to live as healthy as he could but there was no going back. He wasn't a candidate for a liver transplant, so we witnessed the disease eat away at this tall, dark and handsome man to a tall, ash gray, sickly looking ghost of a man.

I agree, testing is important.

Good on you MissCake for putting up a post like this. Its a shame that this site doesn't do stickies (a post that always remains at the top of a forum)

Like you, I have lost 2 friends to this disease. One to complications of Hep C and the other to HIV and Hep C combined. Both were long term scene players, both took undue risks at sometime or another.
Being tested can be frightening but its worth remembering that if the disease is caught early, your going to live a lot longer than if its not diagnosed.
Its also worth remembering when you play with multiple partners and use the same implements, that the Hepatitis virus can live outside the human body far longer than the volatile HIV virus can.
Never be complacent and never assume there is no risks but more importantly, if you have not been tested, always be aware that you could well be virus positive and you could be the one spreading the seed of death.

I am so sorry for your losses! I havent known anyone, personally, that has had Hep-C ( I don't think so anyways)! I hope that whoever reads this that is in a promiscuous relationship that they get tested every 3-6 months. Scary when you think about all the 'parties' that go on.....Now don't get me wrong, some do use protection but a majority does not.  STAY SAFE OUT THERE PEOPLE!!!

HIV negative means that they DON'T have it.

Depends when the test was done, there is an incubation period, the tests work by not actually detecting the virus but the antibodies you produce, so technically you could be infected, your body hasn't produced the antibodies and you do test as negative.

Also between the test and the encounter, he could have been infected...

It's a relatively small risk but still, why take the risk at all?

I know that, in WA state anyway, you can get STD testing for low or no cost at Planned Parenthood. Anonymous even, if you want. Also, doctors tell me that you can get HepC from artificial nails....more precisely from the tools and instruments used on you when you're getting them, if said tools/instruments aren't dedicated to you only.

There was a time when young people were the group most at risk. Now I read that the over 50's are a high risk group for hiv/aids.

I suppose they have a little more to spend, so more foreign holidays, leading to temptation. Been there, done that, oh, and got tested. I'm OK, but then, safe sex is the only option I consider for penetration .

I am aghast at the comments of some men who seemingly will risk anything for sex without condoms. Crazy.

I have read the same in a few articles recently but this sort of bullshit is so misleading. What they should actually be saying is, more and more over 50s are testing positive to HIV and Aids and make the statement that age does not protect you. There has been a rise in the number of infected people right across the board. The spread of HIV and Hep C can incubate itself for many years and I believe the over 50s group are less likely to get tested for a promiscuous act some years before. Therefore, they are more likely to develop full blow Aids or go into chronic liver failure as they reach a more mature age.

I think this is a very important point to those that use whips, floggers, canes, pinwheels, vampire gloves and so on, on more than one partner.
HCV can live outside the human body for up to 4 days and especially thrives in damp porous environments, meaning if the tools freshly washed it carries the highest risk. A HCV contaminated implement does not have to penetrate skin to pass the virus on but can be spread through percutaneous exposure (through the skin)
Never borrow or lend your tools. I always say that its safer for a sub to carry their own toys to a club.

I would be interested in more information regarding percutaneous exposure that does not involve percutaneous injury. We are putting together an upcoming class on blood borne pathogens and I would find this information very useful. I am assuming that you are referring to exposure through some osmotic process, however, I have been searching online for the last couple of hours and the information that I am finding is that "percutaneous exposure" when referred to in health studies almost exclusively refers to "percutaneous injury" such as needle sticks or other such methods that penetrate the skin or far less commonly, instances where infected blood splashes come in contact with mucosa.

It occurred to me that it was not mentioned that as of right now while there is a way of testing women for HPV as a part of cervical cancer screening there is not a test designed nor approved to find HPV in men.

The forms of HPV that cause genital warts are not the same ones that cause cancer. Those strains cause not only cervical cancer in women, but penile cancer in men and anal cancer in both sexes. Anal cancer is what killed Farrah Fawcett.
it is also implicated in cancers of the throat and thyroid.

Women in that age group are a high risk group because their presumably monogamous long term partners use prostitutes and transfer the risk. The women themselves are blameless but it's really much easier to transmit male to female. Especially in this age group as the vaginal tissues thin due to loss of estrogen from menopause and therefore get microtears much easier.

With this said, I refused a Hep C test this week because of the money. No insurance. I trust The Man not to have been catting around. And it's well known that statins will also cause a rise in liver function tests.
