That is not a racist footnote.

Let's see your foot note.

A little bit. I just had to put a foot note at the end of a college paper because I used the word "Black".

boi

4. "Black": Due to the ever changing nature of politically correct terms to address individuals of color and the fact that not all individuals of color are of African heritage, the term "Black" is used to specifically identify a group by racial characteristics specific to that group. As described in the paper above and in the "References", this specific racial group is genetically prone to certain diseases and statistically prone to certain social hardships.

LGBT

This old queen finds it amusing to see this abbreviation appear in a thread about politically correct naming, because "LGBT" is an embodiment of that very phenomenon.

Time was, we had a simple, short, clear word--"gay"--that meant someone who fucked someone else of the same sex. Nice and clear, and it fit handily on a button. But then all the dykes got up in arms because they didn't feel "gay" covered them, so we became "gay and lesbian" or "lesbian and gay." (Lots of greenhouse gas was produced arguing which word should come first.)

By the time the bis started whining, we were all too tired to argue, so we just stuck them on too. Ditto for the transgendered folk, whose link to the "gay" cause has never been entirely clear to me anyway.

I'm starting to think we should all just settle on being queer.

Shoulda stuck with Negro...if it was good enough for MLKing, it's good enough for me.

Owner59 -> RE: I am not a racist. (7/13/2010 6:53:27 PM)

If I`m not mistaken,Bill Cosby bought the whole "Little Rascals" library,to lock them up from public viewing.

Not all or even most were racist.But a few were and blacks were always depicted as homeless or parent-less,poor and ignorant.Some episodes were pretty bad.

"I didn't pay much attention",  that means you have no idea, correct?  You just want things to fit your box.

I know too many people from Boston and New York who will still tell you they are Italian or Irish.  have any of them actually been to either?  No, but that doesn't change their view.  Also highly racist, but that's a different discussion.

Never once in visiting New York did I have someone exclaim to me that they are "Italian-American". I am the third generation of American from an Irish family (the Keeleys, formerly O'Keeleys, but getting a job was easier without the "O'", cousins to the Kellys-so I'm told). And not a damn one of us, blond or red headed, drunk or sober, in Georgia or New Jersey, have an inkling to call ourself "Irish-Americans" because, damnit we're Americans.

No, it's not about fitting into my neat little box. It's about my experience. My experience tells me that groups from other ethnic backgrounds like their food the way they like their food but treasure being 100% American and don't have a need to call out being "discriminated" against or finding another damned thing wrong with their now politically correct term of identification.

Neat how it works out to dismiss a person's conclusions from actual experience as racism.

edited...Irish-mother's side

You are kidding right? No I know you aren't, but having lived in Boston and been to NY a zillion times, there are more Irish-American groups, parades, events, etc., than I can shake a stick at. Boston is huge for it's Irish-American pride, and I don't know any Irish-Americans that *don't* refer to themselves as such on a lot of occasions. Jesus christ, half of Americans wear "kiss me I'm Irish" pins on St. Patty's day.

I also was married to a Korean-American, yes he was born in Seoul, and trust me, your theory about not mentioning their heritage and proudly proclaiming to be "just American" is a fucking fairy tale. He didn't "treasure" being 100% American while being called chink, or gook, or asking if he ate dog from the half wits we encountered in our many travels. Mainly in the redder southern states. *no offense*

I also have worked for and with a lot of other Asian people of varying ethnicities since my man (not my ex, my man now is white) is in the seafood business and we export tons of it to Japan, and China, etc., and they are less than enthralled with the jingoistic racist attitude of a lot of Americans. I am talking about Asians that were born and raised here, they don't want the "treasure being 100% American" label either. So, your experience isn't apparently as varied as mine, and I am sure it sucked for you as a kid, but having also spent my entire life being the daughter of a US soldier and traveling a lot, the ugly American thing? Yeah it still stands there too. When we can't discern how it's wrong to call black people nigger? We have a looong way to go.

Lastly, as a feminist and a liberal white woman, let me tell ya, I wouldn't want to trade places in the discrimination challenge with any brown skinned male anytime soon. I am not stupid, I see the carte blanche my caucasian-ness gets me. I don't see how any white person can say without being intellectually dishonest that they face any amount of racism in comparison.

I never said anything about arrest.  I said calling the police.

You call the police and expect what to happen? Try calling the police to report nothing and see what that gets you.

You call police about a disturbance, something you feel threatened by, etc.  If it makes you feel better that to cops came out, did a report, and went on their merry way, I see no problem here.  They're doing their job by aiding the public.  I also expect them to explain to those men that the behavior they're exhibiting is disrupting the peace/making people uncomfortable.  He was walking around with a friggin' nightstick.  I'd be a little unnerved and uncomfortable as well.

Good for you about getting the clear advantage of being white without the discrimination of being female or otherwise non-traditional. Walk a day in my damn shoes, and you might not have the same stance.

I'm good with queer or gay. I kinda think the whole history of "lesbian" as a term is likely confusing to anyone with a literay interest at anyways.

CynthiaWVirginia -> RE: I am not a racist. (7/13/2010 8:25:30 PM)

Aynne88, the only time I hear the "N" word is...from black people...and in rap music...usually blared from cars while someone is cleaning them or gossiping with a neighbor, and wants to share the music with the whole neighborhood for 1-3 hours.  I've lived in California, Florida, Texas, West Virginia, Ohio, Washington, and Wyoming.  My friends and I, or even acquaintences, do not drive by in cars and sling that word around.  I also do not call my "white" friends honkeys or whitey (I leave that to my step brothers, who are all black), and I have never called a hispanic a spick or an Italian a dago or whatever.  We have better things to do.

[sm=rofl.gif]
I'm a "white person" though I prefer to be called caucasian, and yes, I have been in the position of being a MINORITY many times.  I lived in Van Nuys, California where hispanics were the majority in my neighborhood and in all the stores in any given direction.  I also spent a year in Dayton, Ohio, where I was definitely a member of a teeny minority where "blacks" were the hands down majority.  Roots played, so my little gradeschool ass got kicked to get even for all the oppression of the people and to pay back the damage done to Kunta Kinte.

Please do not presume to call anyone "intellectually dishonest" who has faced racism and chose to...be gracious and turn the other cheek.

You have your experiences, and I have mine.  I feel sorry for anyone who has to deal with racism...but there's a time to realize something about enemies when one grows up.  The old adage of...being careful not to become just like them.  Someone treating me in a prejudiced manner will not force me to become just like them and act like turnabout is fair play.

I will be so kind to them that they feel like the jackass that they are...isn't this something like MLK and Ghandi talked about?

Which is something, I believe, I've seen you say before.  Not that it's a term I think I've ever used when talking to you.

I'm still getting used to the name change.  That's hard enough for Me.  [8D]
