Other than sanitizing tools, using condoms and getting tested, what do YOU do to keep safe from diseases of the contagious variety?

LadyConstanze -> RE: Germs Germs Germs (7/14/2010 2:52:25 AM)

Gloves for anything invasive or blood play, not just sterilizing tools but basically everything that just has a remote possibility to have been in contact with blood, sweat or any other body fluids

windchymes -> RE: Germs Germs Germs (7/14/2010 7:17:24 AM)

My immune system takes care of a lot of that for me.  And, I wash with soap and water.

Hi MistressRoux, hope your keeping well

I wear a surgical mask 24/7 and white gloves before shaking anyone's hand[;)]

Seriously though, I wash with soap and water, try to avoid using anti-bacterial sprays. When I'm doing scarification I use a surgical mask, when I needle play I double glove and when I am doing any sort of blood play I keep other people well away and always have a hepa filtered fan close to my bloody subject. I also avoid being in a closed environment with people suffering from colds. I also try not to kiss and hug too many people at fetish events!

soap
water

I'm not a germophobe and I'm healthy so I'm not all that concerned.

I think we're all way too sanitized these days imo.

Strict, long-term monogamy.

My partner and I are fluid bonded and we keep our relationship monogamous.  Gary had a transplant 9 years ago and can't take the chance of catching anything.  We get flu shots religiously.  Our friends avoid us when they are ill.  When we do needle play or suturing we use gloves and hospital grade disinfectants.

For our daily life I try to avoid soaps and cleaners that are antibacterial.  In the 1970's a popular antibacterial soap called Phisohex that many used for washing their babies was taken off the market and made prescription only.  It is still only available by prescription.  This was because the doctors said it was bad for babies (and humans in general) to not be exposed to those germs because they wouldn't develop the proper immunity to the germs.  Now that everything seems to be antibacterial I still remember and wonder if all these new soaps and cleaners are really doing us harm.  Clorox is my major germ killer around here, a little in a bucket of water.

Always take a pro-biotic- to increase your body's beneficial bacteria and take 500mg vitamin c daily.

The problem with taking pro-biotics all the time is, the body becomes reliant. We naturally produce good bacteria in the gut but if we are run down or have been on a course of antibiotics, our good flora needs a little help. Pro-biotic companies would have us believe we need them like a daily medicine but taking them like a daily medicine can cause problems if you eventually start to come off it.

Yes, angelikaJ, thank you for posting the link to this article. I just read it. Very interesting.

I wash My hands frequently, and it really squicks Me when I see people who do not, particularly after having done something where they really should. I am aware of the negative effects of using an antibacterial soap, but finding a soap that is not antibacterial isn't easy. At least in this area.

I am very mindful in public places. If My nose itches, for instance, I will use the back of My hand to rub it (less germs than on a fingertip). If I have been handling any public surfaces (door handles, grocery cart, escalator handrails, etc), then I make sure that My hands do not touch My face, or any food or drink, until I have washed them.

I also take a daily multivitamin, plus other vitamin and mineral supplements. Not really to keep from catching anything, but for general health, and for long-term protection (many supplements have anti-oxidant properties).

Oh, there is something else. This might sound silly, but...... When I am out in public, and I see a person heading towards Me who coughs or sneezes, then I will take a deep breath before I reach them, hold it, and not breathe until after I have passed by them. Less chance of inhaling their germs. I don't do that every time, as there are times when I might be distracted by conversation or something, but I try to be aware of those around Me.

I am not a germophobe, but I don't like being sick. I wash My hands when they need to be, not 104 times a day, so it's not an OCD thing.

Give up the flu shots now...everybody should. I have had no shots and no flu for years. These drugs have not been tested and proven to have shown any protection for anyone against the flu and in fact often reduce the performance of your immune system.

Congress even went to far as to exempt some from any liability if they should harm or kill anyone. Why ? Why ? So the flu regime manages to get govt. to spend $billions on a drug...we shouldn't take.

Vitamin D (sunlight) is your best defense against the flu.

I misssed my flu shot six years ago.  I ended up spending 4 days in the hospital with the flu.  My lungs have permanent damage.  It was 2 weeks before I could walk from the living room to the bathroom without stopping to catch my breath.  NEVER AGAIN!!!  I have never gotten the flu when I have had the shot.  When I have missed it (twice), I get very sick.  My partner has a lung transplant.  This means if I get the flu now I would have to move to a motel room for the duration.  It also means that I might have exposed him to something he can ill afford to acquire.

I think it's great that you never get the flu.  You need to bottle whatever is in your body that keeps you well and spread it around to others.

i take a good multi-vitamin, eat right & get enough rest, wash my hands vigorously and frequently, and practice strict monogamy. i use bleach to clean around the house, & i get my flu shot every year, and my immunization boosters too. Gloves and condoms are good barriers also, esp. when you don't know the health status of the other party & there's non-intact skin and/or exposure to blood and/or other body fluids, such as vaginal secretions, ejaculate/cum, pee, poo and so on. i guess, working in healthcare, i've seen a lot & i'm just a little paranoid maybe.....

Some people are just luckier than others. I refuse to get a flu shot don't believe in them, my parents get theirs religiously, and every year with out fail my mom is sick as a dog after getting hers, and my dad is sick also, to some lesser degree. My mom is sick about 3 times a year, while I am next to never sick unless some one passes it on.

The last time I was sick, some twit came to a play party with the flu, because she couldn't bear to stay home and miss out on seeing friends. She figured if she told people not to get to close, and she only stayed 20 minutes, nobody would be exposed to her sickness.

The time after that I had a mild cold because Daddy did, and he gave it to me.
