Unfortunately, you have chosen a career field where evening and night shifts, weekends, holidays and not being able to just call out when you want or need to, as well as being able to do heavy lifting with a bad back are going to be absolute requirements, and the company policies are pretty much going to be "either do it or go work somewhere else."  That's the way it is in health care.

I tend to look at things long-term.  My advice to you, whether you think about taking it or not is, since you have your DAYS free all week long, is to choose another career field, such as some type of office work (or whatever) that has the hours and physical requirements that you are looking for, and then get schooling/training for that field, so that in a year or so, you can BE working in it.  You can get student loans, or possibly even grants or other financial aid to help pay for it.  I know, I know, none of us want to have a student loan to pay back, but it's a small price to pay for being able to live the kind of lifestyle you want to live, meaning having a decent job with decent hours that doesn't aggravate health problems you may have.  It's actually possible to set a goal for yourself for where you want to be one or two years from now and achieve it, and tough it out until then.

The years are going to go by anyway.  Spend them doing what you need to do now, so that in two years, you're not still unhappy about what you are doing then.  I mean, you joined this site almost five years ago....does it really seem like five years has gone by?  [;)]   It goes by really fast!

Actually, I've been wanting to continue my education. I'm less concerned with student loans than I used to be. They now have an option where federal student loan repayments are based on income and if someone works for non profit organizations for 10 years, any remaining balance is forgiven. What are some good office careers that meet the following preferences?

salary $35,000 - $40,000 +

nothing beyond basic math skills

obtaining education doesn't require major math skills (didn't do well in previous classes)

closed during holidays

no third shift or second shift weekends

either non-profit or short training time so I don't owe alot in student loans

don't have to be a computer expert (didn't do well in previous classes)

low enough competition that I'm not competing against 200 other applicants

a job that can't be outsourced overseas

I suggest you go to your local community college and take one of those test (brain dead cannot think of the name today), that helps you determine a career that would be a good fit for you.

Also, switching careers does not necessarily require formal education. I've done so several times in dramatically different fields and don't even have a legit high school diploma. I've just been able to take the skills I do have and transfer them to another job, combined with a strong work and willingness to learn whatever I need.

FR:

You should give a 2 week notice.  Tho if you have time off coming- that can fill in the 2 weeks- or if you both agree to it.

I did not mind working holidays and weekends. I often volunteered to work.

tazzygirl -> RE: need advice concerning employment (7/19/2010 1:21:55 PM)

Op, it just seems to me that you desire another job because you dont wish to work holidays. While i completely understand that sentiment, in this economy you dont have much of a choice. Its an employer job market.

My advice, spend the next year getting the training you need to do what you want. No one wants to work every holiday, many of us do have to work them. as windchymes pointed out, you have your weekdays free... utilize them wisely.

I want a different job. I enjoy what I do now and I'm good at it, but I'm tired of sacrificing every weekend night and giving up holidays. Spending holidays with family is important to me. Work is important, but I think family should come first. The problem I'm running into when seeking other employment is that companies won't hire me because of my current job. I'm more than willing to give up the job I have now once the probationary period is over at the new job. But I can't afford to give up my current job unless I know first that another job will work out or I could end up with no job at all. Is there any way I can get past this?

Weren't you the poster that came on about a year ago......saying you'd fucked up your reference due to behaviour that amounted to undermining your boss.....you were on probation at that point too?

I think this thread is more about work ethic and the lack thereof, than anything else.

I wanna be a farm hand. Wrangleing and roping and banging the bitch in the main house and shit like that.

Basically, you can not work anywhere now without knowing how to use a computer well. However, in your advantage is the fact that you know what areas you were weak in and the solution is not that difficult.
Either find an adult education center and take one of their courses and spend a lot of time in their computer lab or save up for the same software at home and get a do it yourself teaching program and/or books.
You can not be a successful applicant for an office job or just about any other job without basic computer skills.

How basic are your math skills? If you go back to school, you can get help by spending time in the math lab or being tutored.

Why can't you apply in retail? Many of them hire second job applicants who can only work weekends.

It does seem to be a prevailing problem in the work force these days. I work because i have bills to pay. If my work requires something of me, such as working holidays and weekends (which mine does incidently) than that is what i do. When i have had enough of working those all the time, i move on. But i also realize that in my line of work, either as a server or as a nurse, those jobs dont have a 9-5 schedule.

As much as i adore my boss, he tends to allow the younger kids i work with to twist him around their fingers. Recently, a situation came up at work, and he pulled me aside to talk to me about being the "bigger person" and letting things go, because they were kids and didnt know any better. That talk has inspired me to start looking for another job. I work hard, work when asked, rarely ask for a day off, and am always available to fill in. Im typically the first one there, and the last one to leave, cleaning up the slack of the others. His talk opened my eyes to many things, including his own worth ethic.

You also need a large dollop of luck. I have all the skills can type 45 awpm, can answer the phone no problem, have dealt with the public, am professional and friendly, but guess what despite sending out literally hundreds of CVs since June 08, actually you could make that into the thousands quite easily, I still have not a job

lobodomslavery -> RE: need advice concerning employment (7/19/2010 2:17:53 PM)

The problem is there is an oversupply of candidates and a huge shortage of jobs. In one case in my area, there are 7,000 applicants going for 500 jobs. 7 into 5 just wont go

I'm afraid you have your facts mixed up. I obained that job through a college I was attending. It was supposed to be for an experience based education credit. The educational goal was to learn about social work and I had certain learning objectives. The company decided to give me a job doing in home care which didn't deal with social work at all. In an attempt to meet my learning objectives, I asked alot of questions whenever I was in the office that didn't pertain to my job. I didn't undermine anyone. I just asked questions. The human resource manager was offended by me asking questions that didn't pertain to my job. The human resource manager was not my boss. My boss liked my work and was sorry to see me leave. My boss tried to talk me into staying. She didn't fill out the report about me that was sent back to the college. The human resource manager did. The human resource manager later denied receiving the learning objectives the college sent. Basically, I was maligned for tying to meet my educational objectives and denied admission to the social work program because I was maligned.

PRN ( think on call here) contains no conflict of interest. Its like being self-employed, or a sub-contractor. No agency has a monopoly. I worked, at one time, for three different agencies. They all contracted with the same set of hospitals. They all paid pretty much the same amount of money.

The hospitals called the agency, the agency called me, offering work. First call, first worked.

That's fine if you are working on a PRN basis only for multiple comapnies. If you are working full time for one company like the OP and then trying to do PRN for other companies you might run into problems.

tazzygirl -> RE: need advice concerning employment (7/19/2010 9:53:25 PM)

I have heard of a rare few hospital systems that frown upon moonlighting. A smart nurse knows when to keep her mouth shut and where to work. One assignment paid so well i drove 90 minutes to get there.

So much for ethics in health care.

lol.... ethics in health care is about keeping your mouth shut no matter what.

try again.
