Well, wouldn't it help him to stay in touch with the "common man?" Well, John Kerry traded in the "Scaramouche" for a much bigger and more expensive boat,...er, Yacht build in Australia.
And at 76' you'd need a crew of six to crew this boat, Capt, First Mate, Engineer, Cook, Hostess/Server, Deck Hand.
Oh, and then there's a small matter of "taxes" as the article explains.

My biggest beef with this entire thing?  That he didn't buy American.  I think if he wants to spend millions of dollars on a yacht, fine.  But I think it would have been better if he'd put that money back in the economy instead of somewhere else.  -Shrugs.-

I'm sure if there was anywhere in America that still made the type of yacht he wanted, he would have.

, in a country in which only .09% of the general population are millionaires.

Currently the estimate is between 1-1.5% of the US are millionaires, you misplaced a decimal, which makes a difference.

Oh, shit. I misread my own source. I read 2,800,000 as 280,000. I have no idea how I did that. I guess I didn't have my contacts in yet. Thanks for catching that before it went on much longer.

So yeah, you're right, but I think the point still stands. 1 out of every 100 Americans is a millionaire, and 2 out of every 3 Senators. A Senator is 66 times more likely to be a millionaire than is the average citizen. I still contend that that's grossly disproportionate.

What I don't understand is that what some of you are saying is that because someone has money they should not be allowed to spend it. If those that have it don't spend it then the economy will never get thriving again. You want more jobs created, then those with money need to be buying to create more jobs etc.

For the record, I don't have any problem with how Kerry spends his money. He can buy  Guam for his granddaughter's birthday party as far as I'm concerned. To me, the issue is simply whether it's the best thing for the country if such a huge percentage of our elected leaders come from that kind of background.

Ok...enough
So the probem is the system, not the individuals.

I don't disagree, but whatever the root cause, the result is the same. Our "citizen representation" is very heavily composed of the most elite and the most powerful of our citizens. I don't see that as a healthy system of government. It didn't work very well in Rome, and I don't like it in America.

What??? Jesus christ, that's just not fair.

I wonder if that has something to do with Australia being upside down? Or maybe because it's south of the  Equator, so there's some sort of reverse Coriolis effect. Water runs down the drains backwards, cars drive on the wrong side of the road, snakes strike in the wrong direction... etc., etc., etc.

Yeah because the money for fuel, crew, maintenance etc etc etc just disappears into the ether. No benefit.

Even the bloody mammals in Australia are poisonous, for crying out loud! What's that about?

Whitefella still here? Okay, we need a snake with a fang on the back of its head. That'll get rid of the bastards.

We need LadyNTrainer in this thread. She's a snake genius. She'd know the Latin name, how it voted in the last presidential election, and who it dated in high school.

f no one spends any money the economy certainly won't improve. Anyone actually concerned with the economy would be pleased to hear about this sort of purchase it will have direct and indirect economic impact far in excess of the amount spent on the yacht.

I made the point that yachts need crews.... it was lost on him

It's more than that.

It was built by people who purchased materials from other people. It was designed by still other people. It will be maintained by yet other people. Fuel will be bought from yet more different people. All those people have homes and buy things.

That 7 million will get spent and spent again which is far better for the struggling economy than if it was simply sitting in a bank somewhere.

Or wasted by the government somewhere. Welcome to the stimulus of tax cuts.

popeye1250 -> RE: Should your U.S. Senator own a $7 M Yacht? (7/23/2010 5:02:33 PM)

Ok, back to the gist of the article which is avoiding taxes.
Kerry is a senator in Massachusetts not Rhode Island.He may regret that!
Some evening he and Theresa may be sipping on a nice chardonay out of nice Irish chrystal stemware on the yacht when they hear a bump on the side of the yacht; "THUMP!"
"What the hell was that!?"
"Hey JOHNNYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!"
"HEY JOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHN!!!!!"
"Oh SHIT!!!! It's Patches KENNEDY!!!"
"CAST OFF!!! CAST OFF!!!"

Lucylastic -> RE: Should your U.S. Senator own a $7 M Yacht? (7/23/2010 5:47:54 PM)

I think 7 million dollars on a poxy boat is obscene, yep, dont care who it is or if he is a senator or ceo, lib or teabagger, socialist or repub, black white, jew, christian, atheist. .....I would be more than pissed if that boat came at the expense of any one employed by him or his companies, who lost their jobs to cost cutting. But then Ive seen that kind of greed once to many times
I prefered the Oz chat, I like the Aus mammals, but their snakes suck(or bite) and I love snakes. Also their insect life would have me constantly on a hunt (yeah crawling, biting critters just make me murderous)

Actually it is exactly what is wrong with tax cuts as economic stimulus. People tend to pay down debt or save the money not spend it.
