Harper will do the same (cut spending on healthcare) in Canada if he gets a chance with a majority government. They have billions for war but no money for health care.

Britain Plans to Decentralize Health Care

LONDON — Perhaps the only consistent thing about Britain’s socialized health care system is that it is in a perpetual state of flux, its structure constantly changing as governments search for the elusive formula that will deliver the best care for the cheapest price while costs and demand escalate.

Even as the new coalition government said it would make enormous cuts in the public sector, it initially promised to leave health care alone. But in one of its most surprising moves so far, it has done the opposite, proposing what would be the most radical reorganization of the National Health Service, as the system is called, since its inception in 1948.

Practical details of the plan are still sketchy. But its aim is clear: to shift control of England’s $160 billion annual health budget from a centralized bureaucracy to doctors at the local level. Under the plan, $100 billion to $125 billion a year would be meted out to general practitioners, who would use the money to buy services from hospitals and other health care providers.

Tens of thousands of jobs would be lost because layers of bureaucracy would be abolished.

Many critics say that the plans are far too ambitious, particularly in the short period of time allotted, and they doubt that general practitioners are the right people to decide how the health care budget should be spent.

It is, but the current brokeback coalition doesn't have any ideas on reducing spending besides laying off staff.

They are ruled by right-wing ideology – hack and slash government spending. They did it in Ontario when Mike Harris was premier of the province several years ago, it resulted in a Liberal majority government. A friend of mine is an elected MP in Mississauga and his father was a gynecologist. I remember the family was angry about Trudeau giving health care to Canada but I was too young to understand why.

Yea, I mean Canada is pretty messed up alright. I think most would agree...they ought to start dying younger and paying more too like we do in the states.

There is always room for improvement. The new thinking is it will get more resources to the frontline services.

This is a reversal of the shouting about postcode lotteries that they did in opposition, now they're saying differences from postcode to postcode are a good thing.....their opponents will shout 'postcode lottery' again (or not again, it's repeated in reverse), they'll argue that different areas have different needs. Both arguments are legitimate, who are we to know for sure.

More interesting is that this essentially amounts to a privitisation of some of the (necessary) bureaucracy....the GP groups will near certainly have to hire/pay consultants....but on the other hand, the cost of SHAs, with 6 figure salaries all round...are gone.

The questions are.....

Is it better to have a situation where the NHS coverage in your area is tailored to that areas needs, at the expense of situations where people have to pay/not for potentially life saving drugs depending where in the country they happen to live?

Will the (presumably more numerous but much lower paid as they're covering a smaller area) new GP hired consults do as good or better a job than the SHAs are doing....for cheaper?

And the answer is we don't know.....but we're gonna find out.

Personally I'm pretty surprised, the NHS is one of the (few?) things they've inherited in excellent shape...with money so tight I'd imagined simply trying to maintain current standards would be struggle enough. Always good to keep trying to improve though, let's see how it goes.

Honestly the last time I had dealings with the NHS was when my dad had a heart attack and didnt get to go home again. My biggest beef was he had his attack in st austell and had to be transferred to truro  St Austell ER room has been shut for years. Anyone that knows cornwall will not be surprised.
The care he recieved in Truro was impeccable, but the long time between attack and response resulted in irreversible brain damage.
My mum is 75 and tells me that her family doctor is the best one she has had in 20 years.
Not living there or working there  for so long im really not aware of anything outside my family dealings

No, giving GP`s control of the budgets, so they can provide for the services most needed in a particular area.

The fact you are Cornish explains a lot my little pasty.

Health care in Cornwall is still a problem due to the roads in that area, Truro it is or Plymouth, whichever is nearest and has the capacity, but the roads often jam packed with emmets are a real problem. Sometimes though the air ambulance is of use in some cases, but for a place like cornwall, they need more air ambulances seeing as central government has always seemed to not care about the west country and it's infrastructure. Motorways in the region stop at Exeter leaving some 150 miles of land beyond serviced only by a few A roads and multiple B roads.

letters offering voluntary redunancy have already gone out in a lot of areas, I know for a fact they did last week in liverpool for instance. the PCT system whilst flawed did give coherent and consistent local standards, instinctively i distrust the new government and do fear it will lead to a ridiculous system of gp's competing with each other. the smart move would be an end to the entirely artificial market system thats been in place in the NHS since the late 80s

Welcome to the Tory right......

The left isn't any happier about this ungainly shotgun marriage than the right is. Probably they're even more narked as Cameron's gimp doesn't appear to be getting any say about anything, and has already recanted everything he stood on. They could at least have given the fawning little shit a cabinet ministry rather than fobbing him off with the deputy PM job.
