Toppingfrmbottom -> Is it true that Aspartame is made from Ecoli's poop? (7/30/2010 12:30:30 PM)

This video article basically  says they feed ecoli toxic waste and then it shits and what it shits is  engineered as Aspartame.

Tfb:

There are many people who are anti-aspartame (aka nutrasweet).

When it is broken down by your body 90% of it is made up of 2 amino acids.
One of them is what is known as an "essential amino acid" (meaning our bodies need it to survive) called phenylalanine. There is a rare genetic condition called PKU in which the bodies of those with it can not metabolize it properly and so the side effects of them having it as children and adolescents is worse than their not getting it and they have to avoid it in all products, including nutrasweet.

The other amino acid is aspartic acid.

According to Wiki, yes... for some markets they use a genetically modified (laboratory created) strain of E. coli to make l-phenylalanine which is then purified.

The way the video is presenting the information is very misleading.

(btw --the use of genetically modified bacteria is not a rare practice)

Yes, it does appear to be misleading.

I really take those kinds of video's with a grain of salt, but I admit it did freak me out a bit, since I love ice tea, and use sweet and low in my ice tea, since sugar doesn't disolve to well in ice tea, and can give it a yucky taste.

angelikaJ -> RE: Is it true that Aspartame is made from Ecoli's poop? (7/30/2010 5:56:52 PM)

Sweet and low is a different chemical: sodium saccharine. (I don't like the after-taste.)

Aspartame = Nutrasweet = Equal.

Sucralose = Splenda

I literally can't watch it right now, but parts of prisonplanet are informative and others are a bunch of crap.

But what I know about aspartasme is this. It is not a poison when you ingest it, but it comes one in you system. First it becomes an unfriendly type of alconol and then an acid. Like a poison slow enough to sell.

You MUST get away from it if you want health and if you can't get rid of that sweet tooth get some honey, alot of it and use it exclusiveley. And keep the carbs down. This, after a very short time will stabilise your blood sugar, and that is a goos thing.

I say give it a shot, if not, well I said it.

I think aspertame would probably be seen less if it weren't for the fact it is about the only sugar substitute diabetics can ingest without an increase in active glucose level. Sucralose according to my dietician has about half the impact on your blood glucose level that the equivilant measure of sucrose would have, so is still not a 'freebie' for diabetics.
I admittedly injest probably too much aspertame, since one thing I just can't give up entirely is soda, and being diabetic drinking a normal soda is just asking to be smacked. Sooo we end up with yummy diet soda! In all it's aspertame glory. Booo.

yeah... the other 10% stuff scare:
methanol.

Those are chemicals we encounter daily that are a natural part of every day food. There is 6 times more methanol in a serving of tomato juice than in a serving size of diet beverage.

(Termy, methanol is also a naturally occurring substance in alcoholic beverages.)

The methanol is broken down into formaldehyde and the formaldehyde is further broken down into formic acid. Again, this is part of our "normal" metabolic process when we ingest things such as fruit juice.

You might want to look into Erythritol (to sweeten other things with).

There is excellent information on this website:
http://www.caloriecontrol.org/sweeteners-and-lite

The information here also differs from that of your dietician regarding splenda.
I do know that there is a difference between the splenda for baking and the splenda in packets as the splenda for baking has an additional starch to make it measure for measure compatible.

That show said diet soda is very bad for you, and if you're pregnant and drinking it, it can cause birth problems. Now,  I don't know how much of that is hooey propoganda, and how much of it's the truth.

I know some soda's have less sugar than others, but it's still bad for you, and something one should cut way down on if one can, or try brands like Hansens, I don't know how much sugar they have, but they were ok as kids when we wanted a drink, and that's what a friends mom gave us when we played over at Mandy's house.

I don't use the stuff cause I am diabetic, all though it's probably a good reason to use sugar substitutes,I use it because sugar doesn't dissolve real well in cold drinks, and I don't like things like equal or Splenda.

I prefer the taste of splenda over equal (which is aspartame) and the taste of equal over sweet and low which is saccharine.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Is it true that Aspartame is made from Ecoli's poop? (7/31/2010 3:43:11 PM)

I know, but the choices on the table, are splenda, equal, sweet n low, or real sugar.

Since I don't like two of those, and sugar doesn't do well in cold drinks dissolving, that's what's left to use, that's all I am saying.[:)]

Does Saccharin get a bad rap like aspartame does?

We've become addicted to the stevia extracts such as Truvia and PureVia. They taste so normal and are supposedly natural. I haven't noticed them have an affect on my bs levels

It was discovered over a hundred years ago.

There was a time when it had fallen under scrutiny when studies had shown it caused cancer in rats.
Later study showed those studies to be flawed.

Take 2 parts sugar and 1 parts water in a pot/microwavable dish. Heat until sugar disolves, cool in fridge. Add to iced tea as desired.

tftb, i keep a few packets of truvia in my purse, for when we go out for a meal. If you're diabetic, you really should try to avoid "real" sugar.

Aspartame is not in sweet and low.

I had a friend who used to mix sugar and hot water and make a syrup. Then she would add that to her ice tea. Personally, I can't stand the taste of artificial sweeteners so I always use sugar. Not sure what I will do if my blood sugar ever gets out of whack, but I guess I can worry about that if and when it happens.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Is it true that Aspartame is made from Ecoli's poop? (8/1/2010 4:53:31 PM)

It sounds interesting, I may try that at home, It's always so easy to get fresh tasty ice tea at home, but in eating joints, not so much so. Which really cramps my style, since I don't drink soda's or juices.

To bad you can't always haul your own drinks when you go eat out.

Specially since in  one given meal, out I drink like 5 big  cups of ice tea, and yes, every one of those had been sweatend, I don't drink ice tea with out sweeting it lol.
