HFCS – the poison that promotes obesity and liver damage Two new studies have added more reason for concern that high-fructose corn syrup causes significantly more harm to the body than its mere sugar content would suggest.

LilithBathory -> RE: HFCS – the poison that promotes obesity and liver damage (8/8/2010 12:04:45 PM)

I read the Princeton Study about HFCS at about the same time as the "Just Like Sugar" ads started running.     "It's okay in moderation"... Sure it is; but it is impossible to get it in moderation because HFCS is found in EVERYTHING.

I think that what I find most annoying about the entire issue is the fact that Corn is a subsidized crop in the United States.

What needs to be pointed out is that these were 2 legitimate studies:

one done by Princeton and one by Duke.

Sometimes it is HIDDEN in everything.

I thought that I did point out the Princeton study.  You are correct, the fact that these were legitimate studies is an important consideration.

Have you visited the "Sweet Surprise" site (brought to you by The Corn Refiners Industry)?   The section about "Myths" looks like it was written by the same people who used to do ads for the Tobacco Industry.

This topic is particularly near and dear to my heart, I was an Insulin dependent Diabetic for about 3 months.  Although personal experience is the least valid form of validation, I will say that once I eliminated the processed food and HFCS from my diet that my blood sugar dropped along with about 40 pounds which meant that I no longer needed to take medication.  I still monitor my blood sugar, and it averages about 98 mg/dl.

DomKen -> RE: HFCS – the poison that promotes obesity and liver damage (8/8/2010 4:03:30 PM)

I think the science is pretty clear that HFCS is a terrible thing to ingest. I'd be in favor of an absolute ban. Of course we'd have to stop subsidizing Florida sugar cane growers which serves to keep domestic sugar prices high while banning imports of low cost sucrose from other nations.

Agreed.  We're paying to have ourselves be poisoned.  I'm a diabetic, and HFCS is worse for me than sugar from what I've heard.

dcnovice -> RE: HFCS – the poison that promotes obesity and liver damage (8/8/2010 6:20:35 PM)

Is there a way to tell if HFCS is in food? What's it identified as in the ingredients?

Lucylastic -> RE: HFCS – the poison that promotes obesity and liver damage (8/8/2010 6:29:09 PM)

off hand glucose, /fructose an an ingredient is now mostly HFCS, but wikipedia mentions more

"Is there a way to tell if HFCS is in food? What's it identified as in the ingredients? "

It should be listed in the ingredients. You have to read the back label. Remember that those are listed by amount, with the highest amounts coming first.

Another approach is to go Kosher, because if I am not mistaken, things with HFCS will not get a pareve. Actually you can have a Coke, but it costs more and has a yellow cap from what I'm told. Of course that will have sugar in it but it's regular sugar.

Actually another way is to completely lose the swet tooth. I did it and can can smell sugared coffee from quite a distance. But then I don't drink coffee either. Once you lose that sweet tooth, you will loathe anything sweet, I do. I don't even want it, in fact I shun it in favor of spicey or whatever.

Since we are talking about a sweetener here I have further thoughts. Try not to hate me. That sweet tooth is a sign of a certain type of immaturity. It is instilled because alot of people give their kids candy, and even in the cradle, Karo syrup doped water to suck on. I believe this is wrong, and I believe that some grow out of it, others don't. The early exposure causes a type of addiction. Some grow and start to prefer hot and spicey foods or heaven forbid - to actually taste meat. I can't stand BBQ you know.

In a few seconds you can hate me. You want everything sweet. Taste tests prove it and you prove it with the loudest voice in the world, your money. You buy this shit and say MMMMMMMMgood. You never looked at the label in the back and saw that there was HFCS or aspartame in it, both of which are worse poisons than the sugar they were designed to replace.

People like me (I DO NOT DO THIS THOUGH) know what you crave and load up your feed with sugar and salt. But then you want it cheap and sugar is expensive, so this is what you get.

Wallach was dismissed as a quack, but people in other countries seem to know more about minerals lacking in the food. Fifteen years later there is a renewed interest in it. Senate document 264 has been called bullshit but what has come to pass has proven that it might just be right. The body lacking in minerals craves certain things, and after eating all that sugar in the first five years of life, it craves what it got when it was healthy, like when you were young.

D'Adario was dismissed as a quack, but now I got this eye doctor telling me things I thought he would never know (iridology).

People used to say cigarettes were fine, but the filter will kill you. We'll take a quick look at that one here. If you smoke a filtered cigarette you draw on it harder. Also the filter filters something and your craving is less satisfied, causing you to smoke more. This causes you to buy more. Are we on the same page here ? Money has just shown it's face. You buy more.

This is all tertiary to my point. If the public was made aware and for some reason would care, and stop buying products with HFCS or aspartame in them, those substances would cease to exist in a matter of months.

Owner59 -> RE: HFCS – the poison that promotes obesity and liver damage (8/9/2010 7:07:35 AM)

I avoid it.

I drink only Boylan`s soda which uses cane sugar.

I don`t eat sweets before reading what`s in them.I usually just eat chocolate or make my own things with chocolate and/or cane.

I make a hug pitcher of Twining tea for iced-tea everyday and drink water otherwise.

Holly`s correct that is get into foods and drinks without being listed.

It`s just cheaper than cane and the industry thinks no one can taste the difference.

I can.As a scout, our leader worked for GF and had cartons and fiber-drums and pales of every kind of bulk food made by GF at our cabin.

We would pry chunks of corn syrup from a 5 gal pale and melt it on the stove to use as pancake syrup. It was a white, crisco like hard paste .It has a very distinct flavor and I can still make out and taste it in foods now.

It`s always been used in foods.Canned fruits, candy and candy making but that was long ago.Seems it`s everywhere and impossible to avoid sometimes.I think that it`s being used now much more than ever before.

Now it`s a hard argument to say HFCS or cane sugar are better(less worse) than the other. They are both hard on a body.

But there are folks with corn allergies who need to avoid it and I also believe part of the obesity problem in America has to do with HFCS.

pahunkboy -> RE: HFCS – the poison that promotes obesity and liver damage (8/9/2010 7:17:34 AM)

I can taste it in foods.   I drink alot of water.

The industry wants you to think it is good for you- in trace amounts- it seems ok.   But the saturation of it- in many items-  this is a chemically synthesized calorie- your body can not break it down.

Some very good replies on this thread.    Every reply added to the conversation.  I am pleased with each and every one of you.   You made me day.   :-)

Yeah, and just what exactly is that filter made from and what happens to it when heat is drawn through it.

But as to sugar, the only stuff I use, (and I am wary), is cane sugar, although I am not quite sure what form of sugar is used in my ale, might have to check on that one. Otherwise, I don't eat candies or drink soda, I prefer a coffee and a slice of freshly cooked bread.

You may recall me complaining about sleeping thru the night.  This will sound odd- but- the past 5 days were great.  I chug water thru the day- somehow this helps me sleep a more complete cycle.

Way cool!

Termyn8or -> RE: HFCS – the poison that promotes obesity and liver damage (8/9/2010 9:52:02 AM)

It is our responsibility to watch out for these things. Most of you drive cars, some fly planes or drive boats around as well. How is it that we (collectively) are haphazard with our very lives ? Why do you wear a seatbelt, a life preserver or go to pilot school and get a weather report before going out ?

So people wear a seatbelt but do not care one bit what they put in their mouth. Many don't even seem to care about what they put in their kids' mouths. And that is an even higher responsibility. But people think the government will protect them.

Forget that notion, read the labels. Then vote with your dollars. That is the only way I can see to fix this problem, and I am pretty fucking good at problem solving. And believe me, noone else can do it for us.

KatyLied -> RE: HFCS – the poison that promotes obesity and liver damage (8/9/2010 4:16:24 PM)

Along with all of its other ills, corn is also one of the most genetically-modified crops grown.  Which makes the wide use of HFCS even scarier.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: HFCS – the poison that promotes obesity and liver damage (8/9/2010 4:26:31 PM)

You can get Coke with REAL SUGAR?? Where, Termy?

I think that the American palate (speaking VERY GENERALLY) has been conditioned to like what is out there, and is dulled because of it. Artificial sweeteners---BLECH!! Bad for you, AND you cannot tell me that they taste the SAME as real sugar. Sure, they are "sweet" but the sweetness is a different quality.

Give ANY animal something sweet and watch them come back for more. Creatures like sweet food, be they bird or mammal. That doesn't make sugar evil.
