Working vacations mostly, surrounded by staff at his ranch in Texas - every moment of which he recieved extremely harsh criticism for. More recently, I astonished my friends when I supported the Quayles' desire for a pool at the VP's residence. Knowing what it's like to live through a Washington summer, I couldn't begrudge them the chance to swim, or the Obamas their chance to get away.

I see your point, but whatever he does will be criticized. In this case, it's not even what he's doing, but what his family is doing. Eta: If the Obamas did something ostentatiously low-budget--tenting at KOA, say, assuming the Secret Service would even allow that--it would be seen as a political stunt.

Many upper middle class families can afford a vacation in Spain and spend $200/night or so for a hotel. With the Presidential income of about $400k, that is a perfectly normal trip. Just tell me how you would provide security for such a trip in economy class. Taking a taxi from the airport to the hotel. The quality of the trip would probably be better without all that security detail around. Thats kind of a weak argument in my opinion because theyre supposed to be a closely knit family unit, and you would think that he would have some cajones in that family. I am sure Michelle Obama has enough brains to be fully aware that what she does reflects not only on his persona but on the nation as a whole, as well.

The point is, theyre constantly living this kind of an extravagant lifestyle. Its one thing after another, just totally flaunting their wealth and power. Which I'm not against that itself, Id like the ability to do the same thing, but its hypocritical because of the ideology that he claims to represent. And what about global warming? i find it very hard to believe if anybody was making this type of money that they wouldn't indulge themselves whenever they felt like it. that's their right to do so.

She didn't steal taxpayer’s money like the scumbags did on Wall Street. This is a phony non-issue. She has the right to travel and to go on a vacation. This is nothing compared to the opulence the McCain would have exhibited if John McCain became president, not to mention Sarah Palin on the campaign trail. And like somebody else said she is paying for her own personal expenses.

And FTR... I think the Obama's vacations are just fine and not out of line at all. He is the President of the United States for Budda's sake! He never STOPS being the President until he leaves office. The only thing I am happy about is that posters like owner and domiguy will not be criticizing futer Republican Presidental vacations... oh wait... they will be I guess. After all... that's the other side.

I've got to respond to this. I agree with people like Sanity. If they weren't spouting all of this bullshit about how we should be redistributing the wealth, conserving energy, etc., I would be perfectly fine with it. I never had a problem with Bush doing it. If you've got the funds to do something that exciting and fun, by all means, do it! But don't turn around in the same breath and tell me I'm wrong for wanting to do it. Edit: With that being said, this is kind of a trivial, superficial thing, and we need to be worrying about other, more important things.
