Jeffff -> RE: Illegal Immigrants Are Bolstering Social Security With Billions (8/10/2010 8:30:59 AM)

I appreciate the insight. I am still pretty sure I don't want to be a farm worker though.

I think I would like to own a sod farm though!

Sit on my big ass farm house porch, drinking mint juleps and looking at acres and acres of grass.

That sounds nice.

RayvenGoddess -> RE: Illegal Immigrants Are Bolstering Social Security With Billions (8/10/2010 9:05:53 AM)

Sometimes, I don't much enjoy being a farm worker either.  My family didn't raise me to be one, so everyone I know thought I was insane to go to college for it (especially since I hate being in the sun and bugs).  But it strokes that god-complex I think lies deep in all dominants lol.  I am creating life.  I am nourishing people, either with crops or animals (because I work with both).  And the sick control freak in me laughs maniacally that what I have given, I can take away.  Then it coughs because it got a bug caught in it's throat and leaves to find some throat spray.

Ugh, I can't stand lawns.  I look at all that flat green space and get into a conniption fit about how it could be used to grow food.  When I told my soil science professor that golf courses personally made me dizzy with wasted purpose he couldn't stop giggling throughout the class.

They are known to be illegal... yet they pay taxes... proving they are committing a felony. Why didnt they get reported?

How?  The detection is only available to the IRS, which sees more than one income streams for a SSN, and can track one down because it is different from the address of the person filing.  The IRS doesn't have the resources or inclination to chase down illegals.

No, but the two quotes below tell me that some of the employers are aware of who is illegal and choose not to say anything because then they would lose their cheap labor force.

quote:

We do not report them because, like I said, that isn't our job; if we did then word would spread that our business does that among the worker population and no one would come to use for work and we wouldn't have enough hands to get the job done.  We would have to offer much more money for it to be worth the risk for them to expose themselves ... it's a vicious cycle in a struggling industry.  Sorry we can't all toe the line to the law, I wish things were different.

quote:

And, technically, the ones doing the hiring aren't breaking any laws unless we willingly and knowingly hire those without "proof" of legal right to be in this country.  We are given paperwork, it clears, we hire them.  We know that a good portion of the workers aren't really the person in the documents, but we are not obligated to prove or disprove that.  It's a gray area of morals and law-breaking.

I apologize to the people of China. You're right, I should not have used them as a comparison.

RG, great posts but I am afraid you may find knowing what you are talking about is of very little benefit here.

Oh I know Jeffff, lol I was basically pointlessly venting (even though tazzy I'm glad I could share my perspective with you, you where a delight).

Wanted to just put this side out in the aether.  Sometimes when I talk, it feels like masturbation.  It's really only making me feel better.

Well, if you feel that way, I won't bother in the future. Thanks for the heads up.

Because they are illegal immagrints, they buy an exsisting SSN of a real American person to use in their paperwork that management fills out or else we cannot hire them.  It is not our job to investigate our workers and look into every single one of them and validity of their paperwork.  Our job is to grow the food, harvest the food, and sell the food with enough of a profit margin to hang on to our business by the skin of our teeth.  We need hands to do that, and most Americans just are not willing to do such back-breaking work for minimum wage or by a quota system.  You like fresh produce in the store?  Well if these guys didn't do what they did in this industry that food would cost exponentially more.  Americans pay the lowest prices for food compared to their incomes in the WORLD people, and it's in large part to illegal immigrant labor.  If we didn't accept their paperwork at face value and turned them away, we would eventually be run out of business by cheaper sources from other countries, putting many Americans out of work and slightly raising the cost of food.  I don't know about you, but having our country depend on another as a source of food does not sound like a good idea (Rome did the same thing and look how that ended).

Kind of nails the problem there. We need to educate people that higher prices aren't necessarily bad. We've gotten so used to thinking inflation isn't a good thing that we are running headlong into Japan style deflation.

Growers should raise prices. We should pay more for food then we do now so that the value of it hits home. It would do more for the health of the country than any one thing.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Illegal Immigrants Are Bolstering Social Security With Billions (8/10/2010 10:24:45 AM)

Why is that not your job? If someone presents false ID at a bar, can the bar pretend that it's "not their job" to make sure the ID is genuine? You (or your company, whatever) say that it's "not your job" so that you can keep earning a profit and passing the social costs of your enterprise onto the rest of the nation. And you ought to be ashamed of yourselves.

This is the crux of the problem. It's not going to be solved by throwing illegals in jail, chasing them with dogs, or allocating $600 billion to border security. It will be solved (if anyone wants to solve it) by holding employers accountable for employing illegals.

What do I have to be ashamed of?  I actually currently have a government job myself with the USDA, and am not working in the privet sector except as a consultant for friends.  I have nothing to be ashamed of, and even when I did work in the privet sector I didn't do the hiring.  I did the working.  Just because I know how these things are done doesn't mean I ever DID them.  I know how cocaine is made, doesn't mean I ever made it.  Is that horse a little high for you?  Maybe you should come down before you get a nose bleed.

It's not the employer's job to investigate beyond the legal standard.  The US government makes the hiring guidelines, the workers come to us with illegally obtained real documents or well-made fake ones with real information on them of another person, and that satisfies the requirements.  If the employers investigated each laborer fully to figure out who they really are it would become a full-time job in itself and no real ag work would ever get done.  And by the way?  The illegals working the fields or in other areas of ag are not the majority, legal people are, so spending all that time and money to be the brown-noser tattle-tail kid in class isn't worth the effort.

It's the job of a bar tender to ask for an ID.  If it looks real enough that it fools the bar tender, it's the kid breaking the law, not the bar tender for not being able to see that it's fake.

You are right that things will not change until the people who hire illegals change.  I agree with you there, and that things need to change.  But they need incentive, because this country is all about instant gratification and personal satisfaction so none of them are thinking about the future of society.  They are thinking about keeping a job and paying their mortgage.

Not really. Bartender serves the kid, kid goes out and kills someone in a car. Bartender is an accessory to manslaughter....

I'm sorry, my sarcasm doesn't exactly translate well in written form.  I've been told that I offend a lot of people when talking online simply because no one can see me in person or else they would know right off the bat that I'm not being serious.  I've got nothing against you, I'm actually very happy that you read what I had to say and took it seriously,  but in this instance I was just joking around with Jeffff.

And you have to admit, on these boards, there are a lot of times when you feel exactly like the sentiment I just expressed when trying to explain something to someone.

AMEN!  I know they wish they could, but it's still all about supply and demand, and they don't have a monopoly to fall back on and trust that people will still buy.

Might be that a bar can refuse service to anyone they believe is under age. Drinks are not a right in this country.

FR:

Why does everyone believe that illegal aliens are only doing work that Americans don't want. Why does it always come down to landscaping and berry picking ?

I am a nurse, I have seen many, many CNA's who are illegal aliens, got themselves a fake SS and ID, went to training and are working in nursing homes, hospitals etc. I have seen nurses, who have done the same thing. I had no idea they were illegals, until the varuious workplaces canned them when somehow they found out. In the meantime, they had stolen SS #s and ID from residents of the nursing home, hospital, etc who passed away. Making new ID for sale or for family back home.

So many here make it all sound so harmless. Try being the widow or widower of some one whose SS# and ID have been stolen and now an illegal is assuming their ID. Or just the average Joe whose info is stolen and an illegal is buying cars, makng big purchases and buying a home on your ID. If an American, naturlized American or legal immigrant does this it's identity fraud. When an illegal does it... it's poor soul, he's just trying to make a better living then he has in Country XXX.

ETA : I am sure that my profession is not the only one that this happens to. I am speaking from my personal experience.

You said it's not OUR job to check their papers when you hire them.  (Go check what you wrote.)  How am I supposed to know your work history?  If you say it's not OUR job, I assume that means YOU are doing the hiring.  Maybe you could have said it's not THEIR job, but I still would have disagreed.

Anyway, there's a more important point: All you're really saying is that we need regulation.  This is a perfect example of why markets don't regulate themselves, despite all propaganda to the contrary.  When one company is able to cut costs by doing something socially destructive, it's not long before ALL companies in that industry are cutting costs by doing the same socially destructive thing, and it doesn't stop until and unless there is regulation adding real costs to change companies' decision-making mechanisms.  But before that happens, the companies spend billions hiring lobbying firms trying to influence our political process and motivating useful idiots to shout that the regulation is un-American.

You are right.  I did say OUR a lot, so sorry about the confusion.  I said it more I think in a subconscious solidarity with the other people in my industry.  When one lives in the city but works in this industry sometimes it seems like an us vs. them mindset.  We aggies try to stick together and stick up for one another so I've noticed that we tend to talk in a collective sense (it's not just me and my crazy no-coffee this morning fingers when I was doing the writing, I swear).

You are also right that I am not claiming that the way things are done is the right way to do it.  I do think more regulation, inspections, and crackdowns would eventually be a good thing.  It would create more jobs for citizens and legal peoples, not just in the vacated positions that the illegals would leave behind but in the new positions to govern/investigate the labor force, and not just within the agriculture industry.  I think it should be done in many of the different industries where the hiring of illegals is common because maybemaybenot we all know that this is not their only option.  Its just that the OP posted this topic about the agriculture industry and this is why we are only focusing on that.  If I worked in another industry and had first-hand knowledge about that I would share, but I don't so I only speak of what I know and people kept asking other questions.
