How stupid have people become?

Ok so I was at work and one coworker was talking to another about HER twin BROTHER and the coworker says to her "Are you identical twins?" and she says "Yeah except for the penis."

Then tonight I went into a 7-11 and it took me 4 trips to put all the stuff on the counter, I pay and stand there looking at this kid and he finally says "Would you like a bag?" So I said "No, just let me start juggling these 3 sodas and every time I nod throw another one up in the air, but its got to be really high." I Waited, I waited. "Yeah, give me a bag please."

Saint -> RE: How stupid have people gotten (8/11/2010 4:27:55 AM)

I am no longer surprised by the stupidity of others. Like when I bought a 3 dollar watermelon at Walmart from a giant 8 ft by 8ft bin marked on all four sides with the price. I went to check out and the lady tried to charge me 4.95 for the watermelon. She insisted that was the price even though the bin was less than 15 feet away. Finally she had to walk over to the bin to see for herself (despite the numbers being over a foot tall) and when she came back she apologized. She said she was just tired as she had been standing at that register for the last 8 hours and was ready to go home. So my next thought was... If you were standing here for 8 hours facing a giant box with foot high numbers on it, how could you have missed the damn price all that time?? But I did not say it.

Or like the lady at Target when they were selling 6 cans of soup for 1 dollar. I had my 6 cans plus other groceries and when I got up there to ring them up, I placed them on the counter and that is when it began... I asked the lady if the sale was still on for the half-dozen cans for a dollar. She looked me right in the eye and told me that: "Sorry Sir, but we are only offering 6 cans for a dollar, not half a dozen." I did not have the heart to correct her on this one and I just paid and walked away thinking about how pathetic our public education system has become.

Back when I was delusional and trying to tan my Irish self, I was talked into trying a new 'tan enhancer' product. It turned my skin a blotchy orange becasue of the dye in it. I went back to the tanning salon and showed the girl that worked there. She said, "Oh that's just because you have too much protein in your diet." When I told my boyfriend at the time, he nearly hurt himself laughing, before he declared that I most definitely did NOT have enough protein in my diet.

The above examples are not the ones that annoy me, they are just a byproduct of the way we live. Either the person is exhausted (cashier may be working 2+ jobs to make ends meet) or preoccupied with whatever.

The things that bother me are things that endanger lives. Not using turning signals when changing lanes at 75 mph. Flying off a gravel road, blind intersection because of corn being 8 feet tall, and pulling onto a 4 lane highway into traffic going 75 mph, without even looking.

The other stuff, I just laugh and make fun of.

A story told to me about a former head teacher.

Apparently he spotted a child wearing an "it's my birthday" badge on his uniform sweatshirt. In this school, each year group wears a different colour sweatshirt. This boy was in year 10.

The head teacher asked the boy how old he was, and the teacher he was with said straight away: "he's 15". The boy agreed with her.

The head teacher then asked the teacher how she knew he was 15...and she replied with a commendably straight face: "in year 10, they're ALL going to have their 15th birthdays this year".

*for our overseas readers, in UK schools it's extremely rare for a student to accelerate or repeat an academic year, particularly in state schools.

We had this one guy whose last name was Zamora in my Mechanical Engineering classes.  We used to say that Zamora's Constant was equal to zero.

What gets to me are the people who now slave to the computer.

When I worked in the fast food industry, or when I need a second part time job and go to work at a convenience story I am often complimented on my ability to count back change.

A Persons total comes to $12.19, they hand me a $20.00 and the register tells me what to give them, but long before that drawer opened I know that I am giving them $7.81 in change… or rather that the 3 quarters, a Nickel, and a Penny will make $13.00, the two Dollars will make $15.00 and the Five Dollar Bill makes $20. Always counting back to the original bill that they handed me, so that they know they have received the correct change. I have no issues when people give me odd change out and although I have to redo the math in my head and it might slow me up some times I have NEVER had as much trouble with it as some I have dealt with have had.

Burger King, my total came to $7.13, I pull out a $10.00 bill and before I was finished pulling out money the guy punched in $10.00. So when I pulled out 2 more Dollars and a quarter, the poor kid was lost. He said… “No it’s only $7 and change. The Ten will cover it.” I looked at him for a second and said… “No I want a 5 back and if you want you can keep the dime and two pennies..”

HE HAD TO CALL THE MANAGER OVER…..

Explained to the manager…. Do you know what he said?

“Sorry Sir we are not in the habit of breaking bills for customers. I then had to slowly explain the whole deal back to them explaining that I simply wanted a 5 dollar bill back instead of the 2.87 they would have given me back as change.

HE HAD TO CANCEL THE ORDER AND THEN TYPE IT ALL IN AGAIN WITH THE NEW AMOUNT!!!!

I sat and ate my meal and while my son at his Kids Meal… I begged him never to grow up and be STUPID.

QSM

I often do that: give some change to make the job easier and I've yet to encounter someone who failed to figure out why. Plus it's doing the business a favour - less need to get stacks of coins for people out of a bank.

I have a limit though, if I can't find the right coins in about 4 seconds I give up on it, so as not to waste people's time.

Sometimes, I've accidentally given someone the wrong bill (not the one I was thinking of) and then they just stare at me to figure out if I really am that dumb.

Course when I pay with a card, I remind myself how a credit card company just jacked me 5% of my total.

I guess you could have pointed out the 12 cents would be a tip. If he ends up with more money in the register his manager might question his counting skills.

I was recently buying some deck boards from a Menards. There wasn't a straight board in the bunch. When I complained to the very young manager about the warped lumber he told me they were probably warped because they were stored outside. When I informed him that these boards were made to build decks, OUTSIDE, he just walked away with a blank look on his face. I was off to another lumber yard.

Kids today for the most part do not have a clue. The thing with the change...there are thousands of examples of that everyday. If they don't have a register that tells them what to give back they are lost.
LOL... Servantforuse...the lumber thing is priceless. Are you sure you weren't at Home Depot?
When I run across someone who does something really stupid...I am sorry, but I have to say something. If you don't they will never really know how stupid they really are.
Of course they probably just call me a mindless old fart who is grumpy and hates the world. They wouldn't be far from wrong!

1. My last LTR was long-distance which was too long, so I've decided to restrict the search within a couple-of-hours commute, a.k.a., a local licker.
A sub said he could commute, then followed with, 'Where's Ottawa'? You know, the CAPITAL of CANADA.
yanks, this is like living in Maryland or Virginia and you don't know what or where DC is.
Dude, even if you don't know, google for christ's sake.

2. A ditzy neighbour was wrestling her recycling outside, so I held her doors for her, and she said, 'Wow, I can't believe how heavy paper is!' to which I laughed and quipped, 'Yeah, what with it being made out of wood and all.' She gave me a quizzical look and said, 'No, it's just paper.' !!

ScatteredRose -> RE: How stupid have people gotten (8/13/2010 1:58:21 PM)

One that I hate and this is a local thing, is the horribly pronunciation of certain words that have no reason to be said that way.

2009. Two thousand and nine. 2010 Two thousand and ten. Now on certain video games say, Madden, it would normally be Madden 2009 or "09" for short" so you would hear Madden "Oh-nine" Since in the area people say "Oh" instead of zero...I can live with that fine.
What annoys me is "Madden 010" Madden "Oh ten". Not Madden Ten. Oh ten.

Another is Grand Theft Auto IV. They don't say four. They say "I V" ...it's a little sad. Not to mention I've had someone ask for a Wii as a "W-2" where I playfully said, "Well Sir, if you want a W-2 you need to apply to work here." He got belligerent...>.<

Url instead of Oil
Urnge instead of orange...etc etc.

And on "Whatthefuckisms" I did post how I had a customer call me because he assumed wireless meant he didn't have to hook up the system to the TV and it would by some weird occurrence, just magically be connected to his TV, without realizing if consoles worked that way, then how would it know which TV to connect to, etc. Customer service is...not my favorite form of employment .___.

I was taught this when I was a carhop, complete with the little change belt (32 years ago)!

When I have had cashiers hesitate, I tell them just to enter the amount I gave them. It's sad to see the ill-preparedness of today's HS graduates.

That's kind of like when I point out to the lady that is cutting my fabric at hancocks, that all their fabric is on sale, and she's like is it? I say yes, she's like I don't think so I say yes, see? And I point to the signs that list sale prices, an she says let me go make sure.

My dad and I were on the road, and this car beside us that was needing in our lane from a T intersection,  takes the last minute chance to shove into the lane we're in, no turn signal no warning no nothing, just whips into our lane, and my dad had to slam on the breaks, a minute later, the guy waves a thanks out his window at us. I think he realized just how close to being rear ended, and would of been, if it wasn't my dad driving, he had come to being.

And a couple times some aggressive driver almost ran my mom off the road. Daddy and I, were almost ran off a narrow 1 lane road because some idiot had to come zooming past us at 60 some odd miles an hour pass us, and then get in front of us, because he was in a hurry and we were doing the speed limit.

Yeah. These are the people I wish would have car accidents, no, I don't want them seriously hurt, and I don't want us to be anywehre NEAR them when they do, but maybe if their actions had some consequences, they'd stop lead footing it, and being so careless, once their car is totaled or messed up by their actions.

I kid you not, and you probably are not surprised given your question were you at homedepot? I was in hope depot one time and I was asking a lady in the employees orange apron  a question, and she  gave me a look like I h ad three heads, and has just asked her something incomprehensible.
