What, exactly, do you mean by "an issue?" There are issues, and there are... issues. If you're talking about someone who drinks a little more than they should a little more often than they should, or someone who blazes a bowl every now and then, that's one thing. Something to be concerned about, but not necessarily a dealbreaker.

One issue would be mixing alcohol and perscription meds.

aliaslogin,

Have you seen the movie Leaving Las Vegas?

Yes...such a sad movie! Alcohol can take over your life before you know it.

In his case he was in the very last stages of the disease of alcoholism and it wasn't fast in coming.

In her case it was a whirlwind.

Well, that falls into a category that would concern me. It may not be indicative of a drug addiction, but it certainly is abusive behavior. That'd be a red flag for me, depending on what other factors may be present.

You still haven't said, though - do you think this person is actually chemically dependent? That's a distinction that would matter to me, if it were my relationship. There's a difference between irresponsible behavior and an addiction, in terms of what it would mean for a potential relationship partner.

I had a relationship with an addict, who claimed to be sober but was actually a dry drunk. NEVER again.

Well, looks like you've come to the right place with your question. The awareness and support I see here has kind of taken me aback.

It's a subject with the potential for ghastly tragedy. I stand here as living proof of the horror that a human being can survive, as a result of another person's drug abuse. I'd bore ya all with my story, but it is goddamned painful and has been publicized to death. I protect my anonymity nowadays. My story is really so hideous and it is surprising how many people have such inquiring minds that not only want to know, but insist on it. Let's just say I have issues with the media and the public who support the slimesuckingoff of misery and personal catastrophe.

How does it work to be involved with a person who has substance abuse issues? Well, for me, here's how it worked: I lost my family, my children, my marriage, my husband, my home and family farm, my business, my life savings....hell, I lost everything but my cat, my car, a half a tank of gas and thirty seven cents in change, because of my own codependence and insisting on sticking out the relationship to the end. And believe me, I mean the living end. The addict stopped at nothing, and I mean nothing, to get the drugs he thought he needed.

Think, and then think again. If they have a substance abuse issue, like it or not, it's going to become your issue, too, for the rest of your life.
