If there was ever any doubt that Obama unconditionally supports Islam in America, there shouldn't be now.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100814/ap_on_go_pr_wh/us_ground_zero_mosque_obama

I have no problem with freedom of religion, but this nation was founded as a predominantly Christian nation, and when I see the radical Islamic terrorists that are still intent on destroying America, there is no doubt in my mind who I will support.

In this case, this Mosque near the Ground Zero sight is totally inappropriate, and every council member including the Mayor should have their heads examined.

thornhappy -> RE: Obama Makes Clear His Support for Mosque in near 9/11 (8/14/2010 9:25:42 AM)

No, it wasn't founded as a Christian nation.  The founders were well acquainted with the problems of state-supported religions in Europe.  The government only gets involved with religious practice when laws are broken.

How far away from the site would you consider appropriate?  A mile?  Off the island completely?

Aneirin -> RE: Obama Makes Clear His Support for Mosque in near 9/11 (8/14/2010 9:43:23 AM)

I believe it is a step in the right direction, promote tolerance not intolerance. Who knows maybe any tolerance shown might even do positive things for East/West relations. But to remember attacks committed against the USA and other parts of the world was done by an extreme minority of individuals who do not represent a whole religion.

I also believe if intolerance is shown and a Moslem place of worship is not allowed in the present world observed position, then it might send out the wrong kind of message to those who like to commit violence in the name of whatever floats their boat at the time.

But the attack on the WTC, was that specifically an attack on the US, or world trade ? If the WTC was located anywhere else in the world other than the US, would it have been attacked I wonder ?

NeedToUseYou -> RE: Obama Makes Clear His Support for Mosque in near 9/11 (8/14/2010 9:44:16 AM)

I actually, agree with obama on this one, it's private property, they can build what they like.

I didn't see him endorse anything, other than reiterate the law shouldn't be taking sides based on what religion happens to be building.

DCWoody -> RE: Obama Makes Clear His Support for Mosque in near 9/11 (8/14/2010 9:44:40 AM)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there something in the usa constitution about religion?

mnottertail -> RE: Obama Makes Clear His Support for Mosque in near 9/11 (8/14/2010 9:53:14 AM)

This is the entire disconnect .... some radical muslims from a foreign country (saudia arabia, fundamentally) do something and ALL OF A (LOOSELY COMBINED)  CLASS ARE PAINTED SAME BRUSH.

There are american citizens that are muslim, and I would have a problem if Obama did not support those law abiding good americans who also happen to be of a muslim faith.

But there is no side, the muslim terrorists were not terrorizing us because we were americans, but as a retribution for us fucking in the middle eastern affairs since the late 40s and early 50s.

I don't support terrorism, so if you want to whack terrorists, knock your bad self out.

I do support americans, and if you want to whack them or restrict their freedom from some misguided sense of these apples and oranges are somehow alike.........then someone else needs whacking.

kdsub -> RE: Obama Makes Clear His Support for Mosque in near 9/11 (8/14/2010 10:00:11 AM)

I think it is not appropriate myself but I don't blame Obama or any New York politician...I blame the church itself... they should have know the uproar it would cause and could have settled elsewhere with no problems. They purposely choose this site and it is a slap in the face of the victims relatives.

Yes they have the right and yes I they should be able to build any place they want just like any other religion but they also should take into consideration the feelings of those directly involved. They are being at best insensitive and are not doing their religion and their members any good.

Your posting history does not support this bizarre claim.

SaintIntensity -> RE: Obama Makes Clear His Support for Mosque in near 9/11 (8/14/2010 10:06:25 AM)

"The Government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion".
Treaty of Tripoli, yes?

Some Americans deny their own national origins in pursuit of their personal bigotry.
I wonder if any nation hates America as much as she hates herself?

DCWoody -> RE: Obama Makes Clear His Support for Mosque in near 9/11 (8/14/2010 10:09:47 AM)

Nevermind, I googled it.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Deemed by Supreme Court to apply to Federal, State, and local government.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: Obama Makes Clear His Support for Mosque in near 9/11 (8/14/2010 10:10:17 AM)

This showed up on a friends Facebook this morning.  Good, bad or ugly, it captures my thoughts on this subject better than I could ever say my self.

"After talking with a very good buddy, here's our conclusions about the Mosque @ Ground Zero - it is the same as putting a Shinto Temple by the USS Arizona Memorial, a KKK Meeting house near MLK's tombstone in Atlanta or a US Calvary Memorial @ Wounded Knee! Now, who doesn't understand the emotions that are reaching a b...oiling point by this insensitivity! Dumbshits - that's who's supporting this Mosque - get a clue"

You do realize when you put "but" in a sentence it negates everything that came before it, right?

You DO have a problem with freedom of religion because you are asserting we are a "christian nation"... we aren't.

What about Christian terrorists hell bent on blowing up abortion clinics, forcing their will on the rest of us? What about those Christian freaks that go around protesting at American servicemen's funerals? To judge the many based upon the actions of a few is anti-American. I judge people on THEIR actions, not those of others.

What more beautiful way to heal that site, then to show those who committed this act that we do not embrace their religious war and they can take their extremism and stick it up their ass than to put a Mosque at Ground Zero? That is a huge statement that says we are far above them when it comes to standing for the principals we are supposed to have, namely, that we are free to believe in anything we want and worship however we like... this is what makes us strong...

I find people who feel threatened by other ideas than the ones floating around in their noggin deep down have no true conviction. They have to get others to believe like they do because they don't truly believe in their position themselves... in other words, if Islam is a flawed belief system and is not as "worthy" as Christianity, then what are you afraid of? If your ideas are so damned superior, Islam is no threat to you in the marketplace of ideas....

Gee you went to school in the south HUH?

Seems there is a lot about separation of church and State by our founders, seems like they wanted to rid themselves of the control of the church of England, but hell even that church still has it supporters in the US

Gee Obama followed the word of law and our Constitution, something BUSH never cared about and of course the rights is up in arms.  Huh why did they not bitch so much with the unlawful wiretaps, the illegal war or Homeland Security Act as a whole.   but no, drink the kool aid...gop good ignore the laws   Black President Bad because of color

Obama seems intent on committing political suicide. This will not be forgotten in 2012.

He doesn't unconditionally support Islam, that's just rubbish! Just like his religion being Islam, or that he was born from another country!

Yes, radical islamic terrorists are to Islam, what the KKK are to Christianity.

The USA was found on religious freedom from the King of England. It was found as a Democratic Republic (or as some conservatives say, a Constitutional Republic), and NOT, a Theocracy! If it was, there wouldn't be a '1st Amendment' in the Constitution (or at least a 'freedom of religion'. As there have been many Christians over the years, that hated the fact, that other religions (Hindu, Buddah, Islam, etc) and even subsets of Christianity (i.e. Mormons) can practice their faith.

They cant do ANYTHING to block it, even if they wanted to. It would be a violation of the 1st Amendment! Why is that so hard of a concept for Conservatives to understand?

mnottertail -> RE: Obama Makes Clear His Support for Mosque in near 9/11 (8/14/2010 10:25:24 AM)

uhhhhhhh............you should know that there is at least one shinto shrine in the vicinity of pearl harbor and it flys an american flag, several in honolulu, in fact.

KKK and MLK?  Not in the same universe as to be likened to this situation.
same applies for wounded knee.
