When is webbing used in bondage?

I can't claim to be in the local scene but in my search and brief forays it seems I only see webbing used to make attachments points for other equipment. Having used it in climbing I know it can fold over if improperly placed and at times will look less neat then rope. However, it is very good at load dispersing. Is rope just seem as good enough and webbing ignored for the reasons I listed or am I missing something?

Webbing requires more complex knots, because most rope knots will slip. Learning proper and safe webbing knots requires more research than for rope.

Webbing has many advantages over rope. For example, at a given tension with 2 inch webbing, the pressure per square inch is much lower than with rope at the same tension. Thus, one can be bound with webbing for longer periods, or tighter with less capilary restriction, or suspended for longer periods.

Consider the obvious, would you wear a climbing harness of rope instead of webbing? Would you prefer a rope seatbelt?

Webbing for attachment points -- cheaper and more disposable than quality climbing rope, more durable on rough or jagged natural anchors like rocks. However, one would never attach to a piton or chock with webbing. Likewise in a self fabricated "BDSM" environment, absent natural anchors, one would attach to their anchor (e.g., eyebolt or bolt and hangar, preferably SAE grade 2 or higher) with a locking carabiner, not webbing.

Rope has a tactile advantage, it just feels better. Plus it's more pleasing to the eye. Since most of us aren't doing suspension or anything where it matters, we use what feels good.

I see I see. I had wondered if/how the knots differed. I guess added complexity would account for a good bit of the lack of use.

Webbing is good if you are sleeping on it. When Im with my pet we have a webbing *web* that stretches across the bed, and he is attached to it at several points. I like to wake up and reach over to tease and rearrange him , but Im like the princess and the pea, any rope going across my part of the bed and I cannot sleep because it presses into my skin, rubs chafes and well I get itrritable if Im sleepy and not comfy. The webbing makes a great difference.
As far as using it for anything else I have to admit, rope is the best for both of us, but in this one way I enjoy it.

The only webbing I have come accross has been with suspension bondage because the webbing gives a better cradle aspect and if D-rings are sewn to each end, the ropes can be attached. Handy when someone has an allergy to leather. I use traditional and nylon webbing for wrist and ankle cuffs for this reason over the more traditional leather. I am looking at a whole range of webbing restraints including the use of the attachments used in the old military webbing gear, as I have a few concepts to test out in recreating WW2 and earlier senarions of military style interrogation scenes.
