Training ??????????

Where did this term come from? For those that have a fair amount of time in this path we walk..were you ever trained?

For those relatively new folks that "seek" to be trained by their model Dominant...what do you think it means?
For years this term has raised the hackles on my neck whenever it comes up in conversation of in some profile as I grope for a sense of what it is or how it is to be employed.

For some it is meeting tests; for others it is being subjected to being broken and the list goes on. In your view is it necessary?

What say you on the subject?

CP

i say it's a fucked-up word that people use to make them feel superior/inferior; it's essentially getting to know what is expected of you/them.

pattayonacracker -> RE: Training ?????? (8/25/2010 1:58:48 PM)

Shujin is in the process of {"teaching" or "training"} (which ever O/one prefers to use) me in the ways that He likes certain things done for Him.
Never having served an actual Dominant before "always got those "pretend-a-Dom's"
i don't have any real bad habits to break,
i do as Shujin has brought to my attention a way of going on the defensive when He starts asking me about something,
perhaps it's from years of having to qualify and justify my actions to others in the past,
or maybe it's just how i react to being told something that i thought i had right but i actually had it wrong.
i don't know but i do know that i need to get the whole attitude thing in check,
He says that my facial expressions are either hurt and upset,
which i admit i do get easilly,
or He says i look like i have an attitude,
sometimes i don't even realize that i am doing it,
not like i can see myself when i am speaking to Him.
This is something i have no earthly idea how to stop, but i need to stop it.
As for the teaching part, Shujin is teaching me how to cook for His family {that's gonna take some time}
Also how He wants His coffee, and laundry done.
i don't mind the word training, but if it irks some, i can understand that.

Certain medical training also involves being able to tie down and restrain patients who could be a danger to themselves or others.

That was my favorite part of EMT training. [:D]

When I was taught I was told at the start, that I was going to be taught to serve. What this implies is that there will be things I do that I will enjoy, somethings I will not enjoy but I will do them anyway because my limits would be pushed and my boundaries tested. It will help me grow as a sub, I wasn't to complain, or refuse, what I was to do was to put trust in my partner that she had my best interests in mind. To which I replied yes ma'am, so that is what training is to me, because everyone is different it will always require a different way of doing things. I have worked at two banks, both td banks, both did things different even though they were both td, it's just how it is.

To me, it just means being taught the dominant partner's preferences and any protocols they like to have in place.

whiteslave,

teaching might well be a getter term, but for you what is the better manner to teach him/her in the relationship?

CP, perhaps you might explain just what you view as a D/s training experience that would not cross over into the "vanilla" world.

I do have to admit that the word "training" puts a bad taste in my mouth. Yet, if the word "teaching" is used I'm okay with it. Seems to me that animals are trained, but people are taught by a teacher. Yes, it seems like splitting hairs but we can't always help the personal connotaions that certain words seem to have.

pepper,

Yet another vote for teaching!

When I got involved with my first dominant partner, he took the time to show me the way he liked things to be...not just in a sexual sense but in general. He showed me how to fold his shirts, how to make his favorite drink and a host of other little things. Protocol wasn't of the utmost importance but he did have expectations in regards to manners and social graces.

The other day, I recieved an email from a male submissive telling me how much he wanted to be "trained" and how badly he needed to be shown what was right. I asked him what he meant by "what was right" but I never got a reply. I didn't play the game according to his rules, I guess.

Training, in my opinion, is the process a person goes through to become better and more efficient at a task. Nothing more...nothing less and certainly not a magic keyword that unlocks the door to perfect submission in a general sense.

Bones,

Thanks for your input.........some well defined thoughts there!

wannahavesomefun -> RE: Training ?????? (8/26/2010 7:37:53 AM)

women train men everyday i feel ..they want the man to be someone who is there for her at her every whim and desire ..nothing wrong with that i feel ..just like strapon play ..ladys train men to accept bigger sizes once they are used to a certain size because they enjoy using big strapons on their men and they want to see just how big they can take ..also in whipping and caning as well ..they might start them out to see how much pain they can take and gradually increase the strokes over a certain period of time ..training happens everyday and its a part of submitting to a woman who loves being in control

Because there are about a gazillon different ways to cook eggs in the morning. Doesn't matter if you could train me to be the best omelette maker in the entire world if Valyraen likes them scrambled with a touch of hot sauce, does it?

Nobody but Valyraen can train me to his preferences. The only time another would be useful is he wanted me to learn something that he didn't know how to do for his convience. Ex: He wanted me to learn ballet to make me more graceful. Then I would find a ballet studio and train there.

WyckedIndulgence -> RE: Training ?????? (8/26/2010 9:23:40 AM)

Teaching, training, whatever terminology one chooses to use is simply a matter of personal preference because in essence they mean the same. Does it really matter when the desired result is the same... that of learning and growth?

Please explain the, evidently significant difference, between teaching and training. The point of both is to transfer knowledge from one to the other.

AquaticSub -> RE: Training ?????? (8/26/2010 9:42:55 AM)

I noticed! [;)]

I'm still curious myself. How is training any different in the dojo than in the home? Both involve a teacher who works well with me, who are patient but firm and who want to see me excell at my task.

Doesn't mean everyone has to the like the term but it seems illogical to, without illustrating this difference between the two, to speak as if and assert that it's a "teaching vs. training" issue.

"I was trained in how to cook", "I was taught how to cook". Both are correct - what is the big difference?
