thornhappy -> Beck/Tea Party/Sponsors (8/26/2010 6:02:01 PM)

I saw this article in the NYTimes about Freedom Works' "how to" workshop given to 50 Tea Party activists for the Tea Partiers  into * gasp * community organizers to get out the vote.  You know, like Obama was.  Guess it's ok now.

They're urged to read Alinsky (what's good for the goose is good for the gander, I guess), A Force More Powerful, and The Law (governments are stealing to tax citizens to spend of welfare, infrastructure, or public education).

FreedomWorks "was founded in 1984 as Citizens for a Sound Economy, which was financed by the Koch Foundation, the underwriter for many libertarian causes. In 2003, it hired as its chairman Dick Armey, the former Texas congressman and House majority leader who was a force behind the 1994 Republican takeover of Congress. "

The article's too long to quote here, but it's interesting to see the tie between the consultant- and Republican-related Tea Party organizations that seem to have co-opted the movement, and Beck's ties to the Tea Party.

Beck's upcoming rally is ostensibly a charity event, but the rally's expenses are paid by the first $1 million in contributions.  I find this really bogus, and it's usually frowned upon in fund-raising circles.  Doesn't the guy pull down enough money to pay for this himself?  Since it's funding a non-profit, all the speakers have to be non-political, but whew.  It'll be interesting to see if Palin can restrain herself.

Uh, no it isnt, in fact it is nearly universal practice for any major public fund raising event. Even events sponsored by charitable foundations are paying for it out of contributions....it just happens to be the contributions that established the foundation.

You know, someone told me the teabaggers were just a grassroots movement made up of ordinary people just coming together to voice their beliefs with no political or corporate encouragement or funding.

Interesting, huh?

There is nothing wrong with an organized group that gets people out to vote. You just can't break the law like ACORN did.

What does that have to do with the topic? Grassroots movements cant have fundraisers? Sponsors? Nothing at all interesting about it.

You're hilarious Servant.

You were one of those people insisting there was no organized support behind the teabaggers.

But now that you can't deny it anymore you've decided that there is nothing wrong with that.

What it has to do with the topic is I've been listening to conservatives for the last year tell me this was a spontaneous movement and claiming there were no organizations behind it and no one was paying for all this.

"no one was paying for all this"? What, the money came out of thin air?

It was and is a grass roots movement, so much so that there isnt even a single identifiable "tea party". Organization and fund raising doesnt make it not a grass roots movement.

Ran across this little factoid on electoral vote .com, I find it interesting.

A series of Gallup polls conducted March 26-28, May 24-25, and June 11-13, 2010, show that 79% of the tea partiers are conservative Republicans, 15% are Democrats, and only 6% are independents.
This is not entirely surprising since the initial organization and funding for the tea party rallies came from  FreedomWorks, a group run by former House majority leader Dick Armey (R).

What this poll says to me is DO NOT BELIEVE THE MEDIA HYPE, about this being a "grassroots" organization, it isn't.  The fucking media with the exception of Stewart & Colbert have largely ignored this shit, as their corporate whore masters have instructed.  When does a "free press" stop being free??

Can we say corroborating evidence people?   I knew you could.

That's EXACTLY what was being said.

Do I really need to search for the exact quotes?

Because you know I will find them.
