Hello,

I'm a hypochondriac, more or less. So if I get something, I research it until I know everything about it from multiple perspectives.
That said, my girlfriend and I both are suffering from cold sores right now, and although I know (in my heart) that we are not
the only couple with problematic HSV1 outbreaks, I would appreciate hearing whatever stories or advice you may have to offer
simply for the sake of assuring me that this isn't the biggest problem in the world.

I'm trying to be positive but it's hard sometimes, you know?

P.S FYI: We were both tested for HSV2 just in case, and the tests came back negative. We practice safe sex. We don't perform oral sex
during cold sore outbreaks.

cold sores are not always going to be std related; sometimes they're just cold sores that need a little camphor put on them.

Cold sores are ALWAYS caused by Herpes Simplex Virus, either type 1 or type 2. They are classed with sexually transmitted diseases because they are sometimes transmitted by kissing, and there is no cure. So I'm not really sure what you all mean by the statements that they aren't STD-related. Do you mean the current outbreak is not related to having sex?

Stress, upper respiratory infections, and sunlight seem to contribute to the frequency of outbreaks.

CalifCick - no not all cold sores are caused by HSV. I have a genetic issue that causes cold sores and have since I was a child. They are passed down in my family. I treat mine with pro-biotic acidophilus. Yes I've been tested with for HSV and I don 't have it.

Cold Sores Overview Cold sores are caused by a viral infection that attacks the skin and nervous system. Cold sores are small, painful, fluid-filled blisters on the mouth or nose. Cold Sore Causes Cold sores are caused by the virus known as herpes simplex type I (HSV-1). After the first episode of the disease, the virus lies dormant in the nerves or skin around the original area until something sets the virus off into another eruption. Colds, flu, and even stress can cause you to have an outbreak of cold sores. Why you have an outbreak at one time of life and not another is not clearly understood.
  • HSV-1 is different from herpes simplex type II (HSV-2), which is the virus that causes the sexually transmitted disease known as genital herpes.
  • HSV-1 is a very common virus. It is thought that 90% of adults have been exposed to the virus during their lifetime.

Most people are exposed to the virus and may carry it in their system. Only those lucky ones of us get to deal with actual outbreaks. I've been dealing with this since i was about 10, definately well before i was sexually active. Outbreaks can be caused for a variety of reason what vary by person. For me stress was always a major trigger. Then several years ago i realized i was getting an outbreak every month just before my period. Very frustrating, as it seemed as soon as I got one compeltely cleared up I got a new one in another spot. Abreva is excellent for me at shortening the outbreaks. If you get it on at the first tingle it's even stopped there from being a full blister. The best thing I have found though is a prescription of Valtrex from my gyno. I would take 1 for 1-2 days a month before my period and have no problems at all.

Since my hysterectomy, i still get the hormone thing (ovaries still intact), which does occaisionally trigger the cold sore. Travel also triggers for me. I just make sure i am very careful if i get that first tingle to take a pill and that should be the end of it. Haven't had a full fledge breakout in a few years now. Thank goodness

I used to get outbreaks of cold sores fairly regularly. I now take 500mg of L-Lysine daily (a natural amino acid, available in pharmacies here in Australia) and my outbreaks have lessened to only one mild case in the last 6 months.

If you feel a sore coming on (the usual itching/tingling feeling) you can double the dose for a couple of days and it will nip the sore in the bud before it develops.

Not all sores are herpes. Herpes out break can happen in or on the mouth, lips, penis, or vagina. It takes awhile for HSV antibodies to show up in blood test. A better way is to have the drainage tested when you are having an open sore,. Once infected herpes will hide in the verve cell where they usually do propose any problems until they come out the replicate also know as an outbreak.
Now what you could be experiencing is a canker sore which I am to is a bacterial infection nor viral. When the infection is treated the bacteria is gone and you are cured until the next time you are infected again.
Lastly, You could be experience an old fashioned trauma from biting you gums or form something external causing trauma to the mouth. You might not have noticed it at first but mouth lesions are somewhat hard to heal than of regular skin.
Op this helps you understand.

On the contrary, while its true HSV-1 is usually found to be in the oral region and HSV-2 is usually found in the genital region. Both types are very similar and can be located in both places. In-fact they can be located in where in the body but outside the oral and genital areas the likely hood of having it drops dramatically.

Sounds like you have canker sores which are caused by Bactria not virus so taking a probiotic might be just the thing to treat them for you.

Why don't you follow the link and attempt to correct WEB MD then as well as a few other medical sites out there.

According to the American Medical Association: "There are 2 types of HSV, and both can cause genital herpes. Type 1 most commonly causes fever blisters or cold sores on the lips. Type 2 most commonly causes genital sores, but can also infect the mouth. Both types can cause genital herpes through direct skin-to-skin contact."

JAMA pdf pamphlet on genital herpes: http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/reprint/280/10/944.pdf

HSV 1 & 2 can also, though rarely, infect other places on the body... I caught HSV 1 on my chin as a child from my grandmother and/or mother (most likely culprits) and now get it inside my sinuses, on top of my nose, on my cheeks, in my right eye (which can cause blindness if the cornea is damaged), and in just the past year on a small spot between my breasts (either passed from my own face to there via touching or via my husband's kisses as he has cold sores too -though we never do anything when either of us has an outbreak). I've never had typical cold sores of the mouth or such.

good morning!
I have had them since I was a child. My mother has them and kissed me so I got them and oh well. By that I mean mouth sores, not anywhere else. Just a little campho phoenique and hydrogen peroxide on a q tip. Not sure about genetics or viruses but 4 yearsago I started havign real bad female problems and during that time they tested me for EVERYTHING twice. Diabetes, STD's, etc etc. But all my doctors nd midwives said the same thing-there was no point in testing for Herpes (genital) because I have oral herpes already in my system and that would come out positive or unclear as well. You probably know the drill...never play when you feel it coming on, etc etc. wash hands etc etc. But as long as your partner understands and is okay then have fun and relax. Good luck and enjoy your weekend!
Love,
Zechriel

One drop of pure geranium essential oil, applied neat on your fingertip to the affect sore, will provide instant relief and eliminate the sore in a few hours. The sooner you apply the eo, the sooner it will eliminate the sore.

hsv2sub is correct: the virus types are not limited to their most prevalent locations. I got HSV-1 at the mouth and transfered it to my penis and other locations; the inside of my mouth and throat are infected, the intestine immediately following the stomach, the rims of my nostrils, the sweat glands on my forehead, etc.

I know I have cold sores so I make sure to keep my partners safe. I always use dental dams, even when I don't have an outbreak because it can be transmitted without symptoms. I wash my hands before things heat up, and if I have gloves around I use 'em especially with any sort of "extreme penetration."
