It's been about 6 -7 years since I have had a period, due to the depo pervera birthcontrol shot I was taking. I stopped it 9 months ago, and I still haven't gotten a period. When I went off it my Gyno said if you don't have one in 6 months come see me, Well my gyno wants to try to force it to come back with MedroxyProgesterone. Take it every day of that month for 14 days, stop, then next month start again, rinsce lather repeat, till pills are gone.

I told a friend I wasn't really looking forward to going back to having periods, an she said then don't, there's no medical need for you to have one.

I am thinking perhaps prolonged no periods may not be such a good idea though. Wouldn't it maybe cause fertility issues on down the road or something?

An old friend after stopping depo took almost a year. She went to her doc as she thought something was wrong, they did tests and everything turned up okay. Her doctor also pointed out it depends on the persons body.
Some people it just takes time to get rid of chemicals in there body.

I was wondering about that, and I called Kaisers advice nurse And eventually asked my GYNO and asked her about that, and she said that you could be ovulating any day now and not know it, and you could still end up potentially pregnant, so it's not worth the risk of assuming, "well I am not menstruating and haven't for years, so it's ok to have un protected sex"

Why would you not just ask your doctor to explain her reasoning to you?

You do not need to be having a period to get pregnant. Nor, strictly speaking, do you need to have a period if you are not producing a uterine lining.

Ask your doctor!!

I just went along with the suggestion to take the hormones to, she hopes, get me having periods again. It's no big deal either way, but if there's no medical reason to need a period, I am happy letting them stay MIA.

Don't listen to your friend! Talk to a doctor.
If you don't have at least occasional periods, the lining of your uterus can fuse together [causing pain and bleeding, and requiring surgery], or overgrow [which can cause cancer of the uterus].
Use two forms of birth control every single time [condoms and spermicide, diaphragm and spermicide] unless/until you go back on your shot or use some other form of prescription birth control.

like others said, ask your doctor. There could be a ton of medical reasons she may be concerned about you not having a period at your age. I wouldn't say it's exactly healthy not to have periods. It could be the depo caused other problems, even infertility if you ever try to get pregnant.

Before choosing a method of birth control, I was informed - by several sources, all with medical degrees - that for most women, there is no medical need for a period.
Unless I'm mistaken, depo-provera works by tricking your body into supressing its biological imperative to reproduce. You stop ovulating, so there's nothing for sperm to impregnate. The uterine lining doesn't build up unless it's triggered by hormones to prepare for an egg, and the hormones in a depo shot build up in your body to stop those triggers.
As another poster said, people can have different reactions but it worked well with my body chemistry. After two shots (six months, since you only need to renew your dose once every three months) I stopped getting my period. I was on depo for three years and loved it. It did take a few months after going off the shot for my period to regulate, but it's back to normal now.
If B didn't have a vasectomy, I would still be on depo-provera.

My periods stopped immediatly, and I was like WOOOHOO!

I was lucky my periods were normal, and not a pain in the ass, there was no cramping, or horrible bleeding, or anything some women get, I just didn't care to have one. Of course not getting pregnant by accident, or by stupidity ie cause I forgot a pill or was late taking it, was the main factor, but who can fault me for being pleased at the secondary aspects of it lol.

I was on Depo for 3 years and went off of it because I gained weight on it. My doctor told me I could switch directly to the pill and didn't have to worry about taking it for a month before it would work, because it generally takes so long for your body to lose all of the Depo in my system......ummmmm yeah DOCTOR WAS WRONG! I got pregnant.....Same with the old story that you can't get pregnant while breastfeeding. I wasn't getting my period then either and found myself with child number two.
I'm just happy I finally had a hysterectomy, finding cancer in my uterus is a scary thing for a 30 year old but I'm so glad to not have to worry about periods OR birthcontrol

I guess you were just extra fertile hehehe.

I've heard the whole it's unliekly you'll get pregnant while breast feeding line, from many places, dr's and women who weret old that by their doctors and such, but I personally would of used condoms and spermicides or something anyway, just to be extra sure, if I didn't want another one on the way.

Right now we're not using anything. There's no point when we're not sexually active for 8 months or more at a stretch.

Condoms do suck royally however, so sometimes I do wish I was still on depo, but eh, not worth it.

I have had irregular periods for years. I might have a light 1 day showing followed by 2 yrs of nothing, then maybe 2 days, and back to the cycle. What ever it did I ended up in my earlier years having surgery to clear things out and any pap smear was always "asymptomatic" what ever that meant.
Now that I am older I don't go for checkups much, do not have periods, and for all I know may be menopausal.
But to the OP.. my daughter used to have a heavy period until she started gaining weight. Now that she is larger than I am, her periods have nearly stopped. Sometimes weight will change the dynamic.

My understanding of the breastfeeding infertility is that it makes you less fertile while your baby is nursed exclusively and no other nutrition is added. It is still possible to ovulate during this time, just not as likely.

Ok, strait from my gyns moouth, if you're on birthcontrol or something like that that's preventing the periods, no need for them.

If you're not on pills to delay the periods or stop them she says you'll get cancer with out your periods.

Now I am not so sure it's as extreme as all that, but I did as my dr, and got an answer strait from her mouth.

* sighing* She said ifI wanted she'd oprder me the depo and I can get back on it, but I don't know if I want to.

I stopped it cause it'd been many years, 7 at least, and we're not having sex enough to make being on the shot worth it, but at the same time condoms kill all joy of sex for me.

And is there even a point, she's already started me on the hormones to hopefully force my period to come back, I think it'd be an oxy moron to do that just to go on something that will stop the process.

I swear sometimes being sexually active and taking responsibility for your sexual health can be confusing to sort out lol.

I have to admit this is a strange question for this site; however, I was on that treatment in my early 40s to try and stop my cylce before having surgery. Why at your age would you want to stop it? If you do not have your cycle, you still have hormones to deal with at some point in your life. That is a problem where I would consult another physician out of this physican's network.
My hormones are never straight even with estrogen and the operation. You still feel pre-menustral at times, and then you want to bite someone's head off for no reason.
I gained a ton of weight on those treatments. They never worked and cost about $1500 per treatment. The happiest day of my life was getting my surgery.
It is like my 97 year old grandmother always says, "You cannot stop nature from being nature."
