Willbeur, you have to remeber to Lefites, words do not have fixed meanings.

Insisting they do is called "linguistic facism".

If hertz wants to make up a meaningless definition, that's valid to all the other leftists.

hertz can say spiders scare him so they are terrorists. It's just as valid.

And no one can say he's wrong.

Shouldn't that 'w' be capitalised because it's at the start of a sentence?

Anyway, the point of terrorism is that it creates terror. The clue is in the name: Terrorism

There is no clear legal definition of terrorism. In some cases, where one group of people will describe an organisation as a 'terrorist organisation', another group may describe the same organisation as 'freedom fighters'.

I found this:

quote:

the calculated use of violence (or the threat of violence) against civilians in order to attain goals that are political or religious or ideological in nature; this is done through intimidation or coercion or instilling fear

This definition suggests we need to look for two things. The first is a goal the book-burning is designed to achieve. Is there a goal? Yes - the Pastor and his Nazi storm-troopers want the cultural centre to be somewhere else. The second thing we need to look for is whether the civilians the action is targeted at feel fear or intimidation. Do Muslims in the US feel fear or intimidation as a result of the proposed book burnings? I think the answer is a clear 'Yes' - some Muslims feel intimidated.

Given where the last recorded incidences of book-burning led, I think we need to take the matter quite seriously.

Where books are burned in the end people will burn...

Unluckily for you, the converse does not apply. You actually, demonstrably, are wrong.

Wrong.

Edited to add the word 'wrong' - no insult was removed in the making of this edit.

The 1988 publication of the novel The Satanic Verses, by Salman Rushdie, provoked angry demonstrations and riots around the world by followers of political Islam, some of whom considered it blasphemous. In the United Kingdom, book burnings were staged in the cities of Bolton and Bradford. In addition, five U.K. bookstores selling the novel were the target of bombings, and two bookstores in Berkeley, California were firebombed.

Where did that lead?

It led to Salman Rushdie going into hiding for some years, and, no doubt, led to considerable fear in bookshops.

So what should we do/have done about it?

hertz -> RE: Book Burning cancelled...on promise... (9/11/2010 2:55:14 PM)

I don't know what you did in the US, but in the UK I believe we jailed a few people for making threats. I'm not sure if we had any book-burnings. I would guess public order offences might have been filed if there were any attempts to do some public burnings.

I did a quick search and found this:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7883308.stm

Looks like we did have the odd burning after all...

luckydawg -> RE: Book Burning cancelled...on promise... (9/11/2010 3:08:43 PM)

and those would be burnings by thousands of people, not 40-50.

Hundreds, maybe. But the point is, I would be surprised if anyone in the wider population felt that threatened by it, apart from Salman Rushdie. Yes, it was a protest, but it hardly struck terror into the hearts of the British population. The problem with the book burnings in the US is that it would be easy for someone to believe the actions of the Pastor are about the members of a majority group targetting the beliefs of a minority group. If I was a Muslim in the US right now, I would be very anxious.

luckydawg -> RE: Book Burning cancelled...on promise... (9/11/2010 3:40:01 PM)

"I just remember it being a very glorious summer's day and I'd never seen those kinds of numbers, and we're talking 20 or 30,000 Muslims - British Muslims who had come together," he recalls.

Don't you read your own links?

It would only be easy to believe if you are kind of stupid.

I wonder if he knows what 30,000 people look like. I'd be amazed if there were that many.

luckydawg -> RE: Book Burning cancelled...on promise... (9/11/2010 3:51:54 PM)

yeah there was probably only a few hundred.

I guess you can make up facts and history, as well as definitions.

Makes it very easy to be right.

So I got it Book Burning is meaningless, unless you don't like the burners, then it is terrorism....

Aneirin -> RE: Book Burning cancelled...on promise... (9/11/2010 4:06:55 PM)

What is the point of burning a book, nothing unless you need the heat it will give off in burning, books are good for that, but why select a particular book to burn and announce it to the world, what reason would a person have for that, what would be the reason beyond making a public statement that the book burner sees that particular title to burn, not the book itself,it is just a book and if you need the fuel, it is fuel, but why a particular title, could it be the words contained within are fit for burning. In which case why, what makes those words worth more than any other words.
