Just recently watched it, and would like to hear others' reactions.

Fucked up people find each other and live happily ever after, with a very nice spanking scene along the way.

My take has been that the Spader character is in transition from sub to dom.

mstrjx -> RE: "Secretary" (9/12/2010 9:37:06 AM)

Liked it, loved it, lurved it.

However, wouldn't it be nice, from the choir's point of view, if Maggie Gyllenhall's character have come from a mentally stable background, instead of the one we are presented with?

And Spader, well, there are only a few actors who bring 'creepy' to a level of art, and he's definitely one of them. And that's not a criticism. I like him overall.

I don't know if I would re-buy it on BluRay unless there's another 12 hours of scintillating offerings that make the package better. (And not to derail, but I have seen where Story of O has gotten the BluRay treatment, but I haven't made the investment yet.)

Despite all the rave reviews about it, i found it boring and unimaginative. To be fair, this is partly because male dom / female sub is pretty boring to me; it's the norm in both vanilla and BDSM life, and I'm simply not interested in seeing more of the typical stuff. Yet even beyond that, this film conveyed nothing erotic or inspiring to me at all. Top it off with the troubling aspect of the suicidal/self-mutilating main character (hardly the role model we would like for a sub), and there was absolutely nothing in the film with which I could identify or find exciting or interesting.

PeanutTigerinBox -> RE: "Secretary" (9/12/2010 9:55:02 AM)

have only seen parts of it but didn't really catch my interest on a level that I would be keen to watch all of it.

sexyred1 -> RE: "Secretary" (9/12/2010 9:59:05 AM)

OP, did you like it?

I really liked it. I love the two actors and I had read the short story by Mary Gaitskill prior to seeing the film. The ending of the book is way different than the movie.

Usually that would annoy me, but in this case I liked how the movie was essentially a love story about two people who know one else "got" and how they healed each other.

I think the S&M aspect was secondary to the story and those seeking something hotter were looking in the wrong place.

I personally thought it was very hot, her reactions and thoughts of him, his struggle against his feelings, when they finally got together his tenderness, etc.

I have seen a few times and always liked it. There are few films which show BDSM in any positive light, although I understand the concern over the cutting, but that is minor since the way it was done, in the film was well executed.

If the movie had the same ending as the book, I would have hated it.

Iv'e seem it twice now. Very boring to me..

lives4pain -> RE: "Secretary" (9/12/2010 10:08:48 AM)

this one completely agrees with sexyred1. consider how it humanized the 'freaks' for a mainstream/vanilla world, and it think it deserves much respect not only for the storytelling but for the message.

SpiritedRadiance -> RE: "Secretary" (9/12/2010 10:14:20 AM)

It was okay, I dont like how he seemed to dismiss subs when he got to close or too bored with them, As well as his takes on a nutritious diet... But as a bdsm aspect was okay and the movie over all was... so so. Id have liked it better if it was more a loving bond based on a relationship and not the oh kink wow hes spanking her....

sexyred1 -> RE: "Secretary" (9/12/2010 10:26:10 AM)

I guess you missed the part where they fell in love and got married.

And uh, the spanking part, etc. was the construction of their relationship that led to the breakthrough on his part that he met a submissive strong enough to handle him.

Oh, and him dismissing all the other sub secretaries prior to Lee was that they were NOT strong enough, nor did they really desire what he did and Lee was the only one who did.

Inthewoods -> RE: "Secretary" (9/12/2010 10:30:37 AM)

Overall I liked it - mainly as a mainstream portrayal of kink that had sympathy for the protagonists.

But jeez, it bugs me how much she ran that relationship lol

For me this was one of the most important parts of the film - how he was trying to reject his feelings, his yearnings to be cruel and harsh in order to conform to what society wanted him to be.  It represented the inner struggle that so many sadists have to overcome to progress.

Overall a great film for mainstream, and a damn sight more believable than much of the BDSM porn available on the net!

DomImus -> RE: "Secretary" (9/12/2010 12:42:19 PM)

I enjoyed it for what it is and didn't critique it for what it's not. Maybe that is why I enjoyed it.

kitastrophe33 -> RE: "Secretary" (9/12/2010 1:01:03 PM)

I liked the movie a lot. I thought it was a touching love story first, and a BDSM flick second. Two people, each sorta dysfunctional in their own way fit in a way that the total was way more than the sum of its parts. And besides the hot spanking scenes, I liked that they each entered the story not understanding, not accepting, etc their natures. And then they learned to accept themselves and were happier because of it. That's something that so many people, kinky, or not need to learn.

To me, a lot of the other "kinky" films fall short in that they portray us as really one dimensional, as if nothing beyond the kink is relevant. I liked that secretary kept the characters really human.

juliaoceania -> RE: "Secretary" (9/12/2010 1:06:25 PM)

From the submissive perspective, there was part of it that was more poignant than all the other parts of it for me, and that was when Maggie Gyllenhall's character had been dumped and she was looking for a new dominant via the personal's section. It was a newspaper equivalent of finding a dom over the internet. I laughed at her dates with fetishists who thought she would be a prop in their fetish because she was a submissive. I first watched this movie right after my first dom and I broke up, so I was just starting to talk to new dominants, and I thought that aspect of the story was right on.

As far as the rest of the movie, I liked it too, and thought it was hot.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: "Secretary" (9/12/2010 1:28:28 PM)

I disliked it. There were parts that were hot , and then I felt parts that portrayed things in a negative inaccurate light.

But if you suspend your disbelieve, or just take it at face value, I think it can be hot.

Aynne88 -> RE: "Secretary" (9/12/2010 3:03:19 PM)

Mary Gaitskill! I knew I loved you for a reason sexyred. [;)]. I love her writing and her short stories.

Op, yes I really enjoyed Secretary on a lot of levels, including the fact that Spader and Ghyllenhall are fantastic actors.

sexyred1 -> RE: "Secretary" (9/12/2010 3:49:28 PM)

Hi Aynne, yes, I love her writing and her short stories were excellent. I remember reading Secretary way before it was made into a film and was very affected by it. But again, the ending was entirely different than the film and probably would have upset many.

As much as I enjoy reality and realistic endings,  I have to say I was ok with the change in the ending in the film. It was all about redemption and I thought that was a good thing.

Elisabella -> RE: "Secretary" (9/12/2010 3:50:56 PM)

Meh...very attractive and talented lead actors, that's the only thing really 'sexy' about this movie for me.

It's been awhile since I've seen it but the plot as I remember is about a suicidal girl who falls in love with her emotionally crippled boss because his spankings are able to replace the feeling she craves from cutting up her wrists. She wants a relationship, he doesn't, so she stalks him, her fires her, she 'proposes' by sitting outside his house for days in a wedding dress, he ignores her for days and then accepts her proposal.

It's sort of sweet in a "there's someone for everyone, no matter how fucked up" way but the plot doesn't really do anything for me.
