Interesting article, a UK teenager has been banned from visiting the US for life

So let that be a warning to all of you, sending nasty emails to the boss can get you in trouble.

You left out "threatening" from your description of the email.

Officers will take no criminal action.

Imagine that... a college student being made to be responsible for his drunken actions.

Wierd, I remeber the left being quite upset that an adult, who had renounced his US citizenship and agreed that Salman Rushdie should have been killed, was not allowed to come to the US.

But another Drunken Anti American Brit being on the 86 list is cool. Way to Go Obama!!!

And a drunken seventeen year old student in the UK is a threat ? Yeah he might have been threatening in his emotional outburst after seeing something on tv that upset him, but an actual threat to US security that warranted a life time ban, dear me, aren't there bigger fish to fry than a stupid teenager in another country, or was it because of the special relationship this was done ?

First BP becoming British Petroleum and now a British teenager feeling the presidents power. Methinks he doesn't like the Brits very much.

Maybe he has heard about the way some of you do nothing but sit around and slam his country? Or maybe it's because moony keeps saying everything your PM does is his fault? Or maybe he just hates brits?

If he were an American he would have just been corralled into a "free speech zone"

When asked about the ban, Luke said: "I don't really care. My parents aren't very happy about it.

Sending abusive and insulting remarks to the president is not illegal, however, including threats, threatening language etc is illegal.

quote:

What Constitutes a "Threat?"

According to this law -- 18 USC Sec. 871 -- which reads, in part:

"...Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits for conveyance in the mail or for a delivery from any post office or by any letter carrier any letter, paper, writing, print, missive, or document containing any threat to take the life of, to kidnap, or to inflict bodily harm upon the President of the United States, the President-elect, the Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President of the United States, or the Vice President-elect, or knowingly and willfully otherwise makes any such threat against the President, President-elect, Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President, or Vice President-elect, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both."

If he had been in the United States and sent a threatening email, then he has committed a crime.

No. If he were an American, he would, at minimum be spending some time in the company of the Secret Service, and probably looking at federal charges. Threatening POTUS is a crime. Even as radical on the subject of free speech as I am, I'm completely ok with that.

edit to add, this is coming from JLF and I in agreement on something.

Given the apparent dislike I perceive regarding Obama from certain quarters, I wonder how many US citizens also exercise their freedom of speech and similarly send threatening emails to the president, I wonder how many threats have been made, written, voiced or otherwise, does anything happen to these people ?

I believe they get their own Fox News shows.

Any threat to a President, past or present, is taken very seriously by the FBI and the Secret Service as they should be.
