As someone who had a fairly debilitating experience with anxiety disorders, namely PTSD, it becomes tempting to medicate oneself. It is rather common for people with PTSD to do so.

There is going to be an epidemic of PTSD amongst our returning men and women. It would be wise to invest in detecting this condition to start the healing process early, rather than picking up the tab on multiple levels later. The longer it goes unaddressed, the harder it is to treat, the more likely these vets will end up with broken marriages, criminal records, and other health complications related to their PTSD.

I hope that is the way the VA is looking at this, because otherwise our culture is going to suffer very badly for it in general... we had well over a million people rotate into the quagmire of Iraq, and they are not only still there, but they are in Afghanistan too

Good points, Rich. The lowering of standards is certainly a factor. The study did not address how many soldiers began using after being deployed vrs how many had a previous history of drug abuse; nor is the possible correlation of current reported sexual abuse vrs previous criminal histories examined.

There is something to keep in mind if we get those numbers. The stats will be based on the number of recruits who admitted to drug use to their recruiter. Not all recruits are completely honest about that.

No doubt about that.

Recruiters aren't above ignoring/failing to document information that just might hinder their efforts to reach their recruitee quotas.
Hell my recruiter directed me to take my GED test in New Jersey, lying about my age(I was 17 at the time) in an effort to circumvent New York's requirement that all test takers class have graduated(had he/she stayed in school)
