Would your dog be ok with another dog? A hardy little terrier isn't as good as a cat, but they aren't bad for rodent control. I'm of the "live with nature" school and would add a dog, to keep the numbers down, and let the lucky field mice have the 12 cord condo.

Get a set of welders gloves to grab wood with, if they squick you.
