juliaoceania -> Does anyone understand the "distance" feature on the other side? (9/25/2010 2:16:44 PM)

I am often perplexed by profiles that view me/email me on the other side. They will have their location as being in New York, or some other outlandishly far away place, yet when you look at the "distance" it will say something like "1 mile". It just made me wonder, how is distance calculated? Is it based upon ISP addy? Or is it based on the zip code we provide when we sign up for a profile. I am really curious to know.

I don't know.  I thought it was by the zip codes.

I would say no. Apparently some do not even understand gender nor the difference between straight and gay.

I mean if they are of age and have yet to grasp their own gender, you know boy or girl, and someone who expresses that they only want a boy or girl, how could they ever grasp a far off concept like a mile. That's 5,280 whole feet ! Such a big number !

I thought it was based on our ISP. I like that feature, you can sometimes tell when someone's fibbing! I once chatted with someone that was supposedly 3 hours away and within IL. He was actually living with his caretaker Mom in HI!!!

Most of the time it is men that have listed their residence far away and yet are within like a mile. I live in an area with lots of resort hotels and the convention center is not too far away. I always think they are out of towners looking to score[8|]

Interesting question, and one Ive often thought of as well.
I've sent you mail Julia...in hopes of narrowing down the answer.[:D]

I have noticed the same thing and often wondered why the system does not work.

I don't know.  I've been gone for a few weeks at a time and logged in by a completely different carrier and ISP and none of the info seems to change.

There are multiple scam profiles that roll around this site.  When your browsing all of the profiles it is funny to watch them.  They change states about every 2 weeks.  The part where it shows distance form you always seems to reflect the state they are now located in.

I am pretty sure they are not as mobile as the profile.

So again I don't know, it all seems a mystery.

My guess is zip code. If someone makes a typo, the distance will be wacky.

Julia and I just emailed each other, while I travelled from Louisiana to wayyyyy up north.
I showed a difference in the distance between her and I based on what my zip code was.
And no jet lag! [8D]

It is Zip Code, Master and i tested it, i changed mine to different ones, and He'd see how far away i showed up to Him.

So what happens when their profile shows they are in a state for away but shows the distance is a mile is this:

They actually do live in the other state.  They enter the zip code of the location they are visiting into the profile.  This way when they do the search by distance it comes up with the people closest to the area they are visiting.

Julia would be correct that these are most likely tourist and business people looking for a little fun.

I have found the distance feature worthless.  For example, My and Gary's profiles are from the same city as we live together.  Yet we are listed as living 383 miles apart.

No amount of distance can separate you when you keep each other in your hearts[:D]

{fast reply}

Greetings all....

From what I have observed and tested it is based on the center point of the zip code in your personal information. I think that means the location of the post office in that zip code. It has nothing to do with the city in your profile. The easy way to test this is to take a person, random or not, look at their distance, then change your zip code to one about half way between where they say they are and where you are. You should see the distance change. If you want to have a better idea of where someone really is, two data points with distance and find a program that will draw a circle around the center zip code points at that distance. Where they overlap is the location. To be very certain, use three zip codes. That is just simple triangulation.

Be well.....

Malkinius

I am talking people who live 1000s of miles away according to their profile, yet show up as living like 10 miles away....

ModTwentyOne -> RE: Does anyone understand the "distance" feature on the other side? (9/25/2010 6:44:47 PM)

The distance feature is based on the US zip code entered on the "my account" tab.
