Life after a hysterectomy - 4/24/2006 6:35:07 AM

Hello All,
I just had a hysterectomy 4/19/06. I had it done laproscopically so it really didn't hurt much. I am doing so well I went home the same day. Over the weekend I did grocery shopping, laundry, vacuumed & cooked our meals as sitting around Thursday and Friday just made me bonkers. I'm even at work today less than a week later. I'm not even taking any pain medicine or Tylenol as I'm only slightly uncomfortable. I'm very thankful and lucky to have come through this without any pain when I was expecting lots.
While I'm awaiting the 6 week no sexual contact period to be done I'm finding I have a lot of things I'm concerned about. I have ask my Doctor most of them, but being he's a man and never had this done himself I'd like to have more than just his opinion. He also stated averages and said most women handle things completely different from each other so it depends on the woman.
If you've had this done could you please take the time to answer my questions. It would help me have a better idea of what to expect once I'm ready to play again.
1- Did the first time you had sex hurt after your surgery?
2-Did sex feel different without your cervix in the canal anymore?
3-Do you think you still get as wet as you did before surgery?
4-Did your vaginal odor change?
5-How long before you felt it was safe to use a vibrator?
6-Did you feel your vaginal tract was shorter? Like before surgery I could comfortably take a 9" penis comfortably. Could I feel like my canal be shorter now and those big ones not be comfortable anymore?
and lastly
7-When you cum does the orgasm feel the same as before or different?
Any lady's response who went through a hysterectomy and is willing to tell me how things went for them would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Suzanne

while each person is different,  i myself didn't notice much of a difference after mine except for the fact i was more relaxed.  i didn't have to worry about a period, didn't have to worry about getting pregnant, i could just enjoy sex.  now...the downfalls i've had.   i went in for a hysterectomy and they did the same surgery you had , they left the ovaries....but a few days later ovaries exploded and i had to go back in and have them removed.  i'm pretty sure there might be a little difference with someone who still has their ovaries and one that doesn't.

i have noticed over the years (this happened back when i was 32 and i'm 49 now) that i do seem to have some scar tissue around the cervix. if that gets too bad or painful, the dr can remove the scar tissue.  but this you won't have to worry about so soon, just keep in mind years down.

yes for a little while it was tender down there,  you just had surgery!  and some women it takes a little longer, a little more foreplay for them to get as wet.......but yeah...you can.  if there is a problem there's always lube

oh a suggestion.  i study herbs and found out that red clover (its sold in pill form, at any drug or health food store) is great for someone that had a hysterectomy.  it helps with mood swings, hot flashes and usually no side effects. girls it goes for you that haven't had a hysterectomy but are going thru menopause also...

1.  My surgeon said sex was okay after the 6 weeks healing time. No sex did not hurt.
2.No it didn't feel any differently
3. Oh my, Yes!
4. Nope
5. Same as first question, 6 weeks
6. The same, although in some ways I felt liberated and so orgasmed more easily
7.  Since there is no cervix to hit against, the canal probably can take a longer penis/vibrator

Welcome to the wonderful world of no periods...Yeah.  I had a hysterectomy in 2003.  Although it seems I had a few different things done.  I also had a post-terior repair.  Which is basically where they cut your vaginal wall all the way up and reinforce your anal wall by stitching it together, or at least that's the best interpretation that I have.
1.  We started out with just clitoral stimulation.  I could have orgasms that way and it didn't hurt.  We were doing that about 1 week after surgery.  After about 3 weeks we tried regular intercourse, but it hurt really bad.  Mostly because of the stitches.  We started having sex without pain about 5 weeks.
2.  I couldn't tell that my cervix wasn't there anymore.
3.  I definitely still get as wet as before.
4.  I did not have a change in vaginal odor.
5.  I would think that if you can handle a real penis, you should be able to handle a vibrator.
6.  I really couldn't tell a difference in the length of the vaginal tract.  Although with me, I became much tighter.  I really couldn't handle a very big penis before, but now I have to be prepped and massaged for a normal size penis.
7.  My orgasms are much more intense now because I don't have the pain anymore.

There is life after a hysterectomy and it is a much brighter life.

Good luck with your recovery.

OK now I'm jealous of all you women who've had hysterectomies ...

I'm infertile. I'll never have a baby ... Because I have ovaries and a uterus, I get to experience agonizing pain about 5 minutes after I orgasm. This pain doesn't happen when I masturbate ... It has to do with insertion. The pain can last anywhere from a couple minutes to a couple hours or longer ... Painkillers don't help. They barely touch it ... Sometimes it helps if I alternate heating pad with an ice pack every 15 minutes but sometimes it doesnt.

I've asked, flat out, if I could just have hysterectomy now while I'm still really young and can bounce back from it and move on with my life. I've been told no ... Its not absolutely necessary and I just never know, someday science may find a way for me to have a baby and wouldn't I be disapointed if I have no womb for it to grow in?

I dont want to be pregnant ... Damnit! If I want a child, I'll adopt one ... The idea of morning sickness, weight gain, stretch marks, and however many hours of labor does not thrill me. Some women like that ... I'm not one of them. lol I know, its a ridiculous thing to be envious about but ... I am. *sighs*

You are correct.  If you have your ovaries (or even part of an ovary), you still have hormonal function.  If not, you have another set of menopausal issues to deal with.

congrats!!!! sounds like you are making a great recovery-no complications and back to functioning at home and work!!!

1- Did the first time you had sex hurt after your surgery?

No, and because of the level of discomfort this slave felt before the surgery, penetration was finally enjoyable!

2-Did sex feel different without your cervix in the canal anymore?

Yes, for the same reason given for answer #1.

3-Do you think you still get as wet as you did before surgery?

As wet if not wetter, however, this slave was only relieved of her uterus, cervix, right tube and offending right ovary, leaving the left one in.

4-Did your vaginal odor change?

No

5-How long before you felt it was safe to use a vibrator?

n/a...sorry, can't help with this one as this slave has never used a vibrator on herself, or has anyone else, before Master, but that was 10 years after the surgery.

6-Did you feel your vaginal tract was shorter? Like before surgery I could comfortably take a 9" penis comfortably. Could I feel like my canal be shorter now and those big ones not be comfortable anymore?

maybe---they sewed the end of the canal shut after removing the cervix and uterus, correct?

7-When you cum does the orgasm feel the same as before or different?

as stated previously, it was much more enjoyable getting TO the orgasm because penetration was no longer excrutiating...however, penetration has never been the only way to get this slave to an orgasm, so that wasn't really a big deal.

hope this helps!

Hello All,
Thanks for all these responses so far. It really helps to get the answers from someone who's gone through it before and not just a male Dr. opinion.
Like you angelthighhighs I have been allowed to keep both my ovaries. I'm sorry to hear yours exploded. I never even considered that could be possible. I'm hoping as my tubes were tied 18 years ago they will not freak out after having my womb and cervix removed.
I'm sorry to hear many of you had painful intercourse prior to your surgeries. Thank God that was not me. I needed the hysterectomy due to the lining in my uterus actually growing into the wall of my uterus. It's a condition called adenomyosis.
Wow happilymarried 1 week after surgery you were stimulated to orgasm & 3 weeks after surgery you tried to have intercourse! I would have been afraid I'd tear something. LOL I'm horny enough to maybe try the exterior stimulation now you say it didn't have any bad effects for you. I was pretty depressed I couldn't even play with myself for a month. Now I may not have to wait that long and for your help I'm grateful.
Dear darq I can relate to your frustration. My periods have been like 20 out of 30 days a month for the past two years due to my condition. I have had four kids & my tubes tied 18 years and they still would not consider a hysterectomy for me till they found this condition. I can sympathize with you. I hope all goes well for you and eventually you can convince a Dr. to help you out.
Mercnbeth I just wanted to say I also did not like or play with toys till I found this BDSM lifestyle & now I'm totally hooked. I'm glad I'm not the only one who learned to like them later in life.

Again thanks to all of you & I'll talk to you soon,
Suzanne

Depending on your MD and procedure you were most likely told not to have intercourse for 4-6 weeks after your operation. The same rule applies to use of vibes. When you are cleared to have intercourse, you may resume any type of vaginal penetration you like. Until then, nothing should be inserted into your vagina, not even a finger.

The length of your vaginal canal should not be  significantly changed by the removal of your cervix. Perhaps a cm or so either way, but not in general. The cervix is the end of the vaginal canal and when it is removed, you are sewn shut at the point where your vaginal canal always ended. The exception is in the case of vaginal vault prolapse, but it does not appear that was the reason for your hysterectomy.

No, and mine was not laprascopic so I had other issues such as abdomen trauma to deal with.

Oooooooo It feels WAY better!! My cervix was always sensitive, and having it banged or prodded only caused me discomfort. I no longer have that problem. :-) I was concerned that the contractions wouldn't be as strong, and they aren't but I don't actually notice that anymore.

3-Do you think you still get as wet as you did before surgery?

Not at first. Hormonal fluctations tend to play a role in how wet you become. It's really dependant on whether you lose your ovaries or if they're functioning back at 100%. I was back to my old self after about a year.

4-Did your vaginal odor change?

Nope.

5-How long before you felt it was safe to use a vibrator?

I admit I was very nervous and over-protective when it came to this kind of thing. I insisted my partners be very gentle (What a drag!) at first. After about a year I started 'forgetting' to worry.

Quite the opposite for me. No cervix = more comfort room. LOL

7-When you cum does the orgasm feel the same as before or different?

My first words after my first post-op sex was "I'm not broken!! I'm not broken!!" I did a little dance around the room while my partner laughed. I didn't realize how afraid I was that I would lose something. But no, I'd say it's better than ever.

I spent many miserable years dealing with my issues simply because medical science still balks at the idea that a woman should have 100% control over her uterus. I was mid-40 before I finally got one. Grrrr.

I empathize. {{{{HUG!!!}}}}

If you've had a total hysterectomy you may experiencing vaginal dryness so if that happens break out the lube! Seeing as I haven't had a hyst. I can't offer any more insight into it than what I've been taught. I have to admit I'd be very happy not to experience another bloated, crampy, irritable, moody period so I'm a little envious.

I"m envious because I've never really been able to fully enjoy sex ...

Penetration always hurts ... After the act of sex I curl up and cry with the pain. This pain can last anywhere from 15 mins to several hours. I dont have a period very often but when I do it literally knocks me flat ... Before I became sexually active it was difficult but afterwards, it became downright miserable.

My initial thought was that I'd been unfortunate enough to get an STD with my first partner ... This however has been proven to not be the case. I've been told its PCOS, endometriosis, and various other things I cant even remember. Basically, they cant figure it out ... It upsets me because instead of doing something about it, I'm told I just have to learn to live with it.

Either that or I have to find 3 doctors who all agree that the surgery would be more beneficial to me than waiting for the possibility of medical science. How did you finally get yours done, Cin?

That is terrible the dr's are ignoring your pain Darq.  I had back pain and injury duee to a horse fall and for a year the dr's ignored my complaints and stuff till I was finally inable to walk or stand and had to have a wheelchair.

darq:  you poor dear.....i would suggest a second opinion....i too had female problems that were very painful for many yrs and underwent 30 some surgeries throught my life for this....i finally got fed up after trying the hormones and pills and all the other bs the doc pushed my way, and told them I WANT a hysterectomy....it took me a good 8 wks to recover, as i had lots of scar tissue inside and surgery was for over 4 hrs.....there is hope after though....i feel like a totally different person, and feel more freedom.   It does get better, it takes time.

Hello darq,
My hysterectomy had nothing to do with pain. I was bleeding 20-25 out of 30 days heavily with over 1 measuring cup sized clots constantly coming out. I had a condition called adenomyosis. What was happening was instead of the lining in my uterus coming off and coming out with my cycle every month it was embedding itself into the walls of my uterus. My uterus kept getiing bigger and bigger. It took three years of comparing sonograms before they noticed this condition. My Dr. said a hysterectomy was the only way to diagnose it. I of course said how soon can we do this?
