gungadin09 -> pain and a bump in my wrist (9/29/2010 3:47:42 AM)

For over a year now, i've had a pinpoint pain at a spot about an inch above my left wrist. It's approximately at the spot that would intersect if you drew a line horizontally from the base of my thumb, and vertically, between my first and second knuckles. At the intersection of those two lines, and, like i said, about an inch above my wrist.

For years i've had very manual jobs (cooking, baking, janitorial work, barista), and i use my hands a lot. i've noticed this pain at the spot on my left hand, and a weakness in the muscles of the left hand, after repetitive use. Normally, it gets better on my days off, and then i'm ready to go back to work.

But today, i also noticed a small lump there, as well as the pinpoint pain. It's about the size of a pea, and it moves up and down by half an inch if i make a fist. Anyone got any ideas for what it could be? i know... go see a doctor. But, has anyone ever seen anything like this? Thanks.

pam

Yes, go see a doctor. LOL. It could be a ganglion cyst...sounds about right. They used to call them bible cysts because when they grew large enough they would smash them with the family bible. They grow on a tendon as a result of repetitive motion. Today, they do minor surgery to remove them.

First: yes, go see a physician.

I do not think that it is anything serious. It may be a fluid filled cyst. If I recall correctly my sister in law used to have something similar on her wrist and she had it eventually operated and excised. (Any operation is risky and may exacerbate the situation instead of improving on it.)

Have your heart checked out and make sure that after you have worked or exercised that you ingest some salt to resupply your electrolites.

Okay, it was a cyst. i poked it myself, with a needle, and this jelly came out. i know, that's not Kosher. i just don't have the money to see a doctor right now. If it comes back, i'll have it removed. i promise. Anyway, thanks for the advice.

Pam

I totally understand not having enough money for a doctor. However most towns have a low income walk in clinic that operates on a sliding scale from $0 for the unemployed to 10-15$ for those that work low wage jobs. I'm really good at finding them - if you email me what town, state you live in, I would be glad to help you find someplace that would help you.

It probably will refill. I find cysts usually do unless fully removed, not just drained.

I have a recurring ganglion cyst. My dr's believe in surgery as a last resort, so instead they numbed it and poked it several times with a needle and then rubbed it to get the fluid inside to dissipate. Yeah, when the numbing wore off, the pain was excruciating for days. Decided, screw that, old fashioned methods are not always bad. From then on when it started to grow enough to feel it, i had someone smack it with the book. Hurt much less, and went away for about just as long. Now i don't let it get that far. When it starts, i just kinda punch the wall with my wrist and it seems to break it up. Happens maybe every 6 mos or year. Decent pain tolerance is not a bad thing sometimes

Yep, that's exactly what I used to do every few months for a few years. Now it hasn't come back in a few years.

I grow ganglion cysts too, and so does my son.

Years ago, I talked with our old librarian who had had 3 surgeries for these and they kept growing back, so I said to heck with the surgeries. [:D]

My first two got large and broke on their own, after I accidentally bent my wrist too far.  They had limited my range of motion after a while, when I had been babying them.  Probably a cat tried to trip me and I saved myself by grabbing a wall or doorway.  I felt pain, then noticed later that my wrist looked normal for the first time in months.

I've been without anything noticeable now for over 5 years, but maybe that's because I'm not sewing for 6-8 hours per day anymore, and not spending hours per day writing.  I love typing...it hurts the arthritis in my knuckles less than writing letters out by hand.

LadyEternity, I would be interested in knowing those sliding scale clinics in my area.  Not for myself, but for others I know that are on unemployment or are just underemployed and broke.  I live in Bluefield, WV.

What I need is dental.  Do you know how to find out where a dental school is?  My cousin goes to one in Dayton, Ohio area and gets all kinds of work done to her teeth for only $10 each visit.  My medical coverage doesn't include dental, other than an office visit and the cost of pulling out a tooth...I am so not kidding.  If you can help me with this, I'd appreciate it.

Tug River in Gary for dental work sucks.  For a cavity, it takes something like 6 office visits at $20+ per visit.  That is the only place I know of for dental with sliding scale here, and I would even drive 3 hours away for a dental school.  I was considering going to the one in Ohio when I visit my cousin each year.

Thank you in advance...and I hope you know of something.  Mom visited my sister in Texas and my sister charged and is paying for all the dental work done, and mom feels guilty.  I would like to give her an alternative next time.

Pam, maybe you should ask LadyEternity about dental colleges too.

i can look for them myself, but thanks for the idea.

I had a large ganglion cyst that actually prevented me from moving the center two fingers on my right hand. (This was 1989) My doctor didn't believe the surgery was effective since most come back after surgery. He did the Bible thing. Hurt like hell for about half an hour, but I could move my fingers instantly. It has never come back.
