I guess it's been a while since I've given regular spankings, paddlings, canings and such. Well, the ol wrist hurts A LOT. I type all the type and do lots of exercise that puts pressure on the wrists (walking planks, all sorts of push ups) and rarely have pain.

How do I avoid this?

I take the thing chondroitin and something else mix from Costco. I also consume lots of EVOO, fish oil and water.

Long black gloves are your friend. With a  wrist brace cleverly concealed beneath.  Something that would be used to alleviate the pain of Carpal Tunnel syndrome.

This works for me.  The brace gives a bit of extra support, and takes some of the strain off.

Sounds like you need to improve your technique. You should be using your entire arm and shoulder/upper back in your swing (not too different from a tennis swing). That will spread the stress of the swing and impact across a larger portion of your body. Put too much stress on your wrist and you get carpal tunnel (or something similar). Put too much on your elbow and you get tennis elbow. Put too much on your shoulder and you get a rotator cuff issue. Also make sure that you are letting the implement of choice do most of the work. It doesn't take much effort to get a paddle or cane to hurt like hell if you swing it properly.

with a cane or crop, no issues.

with spankings, more wrist is involved. The worst is with Cat o 9 as I use it in a sweeping motion.

The first thing to do is to get rid of the current inflamation. Ice and anti-inflamitory medicine. Advil can be used as an NSAID anti-inflamitory or your doctor can prescribe something stronger. First you must heal before trying any thing else.

Once the inflamation is gone then do a little exercise. Take a 1lb dumbel, hold it in your hand, palm down, while resting your arm on a table or chair. Let your wrist overhang past the table or chair. Bend your wrist down and back up. Do sets of 10. I would start out at 1 rep of 10 for the first week. If that weight is too much go to 1/2 pound weight. If the weight feels too light do more reps. Do not increase the weight. What you are looking to do is build up your muscle stamina, not necessarily strength/brute force. You want to build up the stamina of the wrist bending motion. Low weight and high reps will do this.

The key is to strengthen your wrist. Increasing your muscle stamina will reduce the shock load that occurs on your wrist. Inflamation occurs mainly in tendons, ligaments, and joints. Increasing muscle stamina greatly reduces the stress put on tendons and ligaments and your joints. Unfortunately this technique does take time. So it takes weeks, not days to build up your stamina. I also have to add that getting an opinion from an Orthopediac specialist might be a good idea if you are having condsiderable pain.

Sounds like repetitive motion strain. Let it heal and train for it.

Meanwhile.. switch up implements. My most evil is a djambok... huge impact with only a flick of the wrist.

Now, if you want a closer, OTK, implement... I use a 4 inch pizza paddle. It is hand width oak with an 18 inch handle. Works well for OTK and doesn't irritate the joints of the wrist and hand.
