Tv news reports, the newspapers, media, are we the better for it or worse ?

Do we really need to know everything bad that is happening in the world, I emphasize bad, as it is not often good news makes the headlines.

Is the media being the source of everything we learn on a day to day basis in reality dividing us into sets and subsets of sets ad finitum. Is the media making us into a society of impressionable individuals who seek our own kind when in times of strife and that strife being what the media decides it is ?

Best to have them, but not pay much attention. Just there for the facts on emergencies, ignore the speculation, opinions, poorly sourced (often fictional) stories.

I don't have a problem with bad news: it's an ugly world where unpleasant things happen, and failing to represent this in the news would be irresponsible and evasive.
What I do have a problem with, though, is the huge chunk of the media that has no interest in news at all and just devotes itself to celebrity watching and similar bullshit. You don't expect any better from supermarket checkout magazines, but when all of the redtops have more about Big Brother or Christian Bale's latest tantrum than the economy going down the toilet, then there's a serious problem.

“The biases the media has are much bigger than conservative or liberal. They're about getting ratings, about making money, about doing stories that are easy to cover.”   Al Franken

That is the best summation of American media I have seen.

"Democrats take the House & Senate in 2010!" "The GOP loses more seats then it made in 2010" "Palin has love affair with Beck"

While any of these stories would be considered 'good' to some, they are considered 'bad' to others. So exactly what is your defination of 'bad' when compared to 'media'?
