This is a link to a really neat volcano video.  It is about 1 minute long.

You can also just click to read the description about what is going on and the precautions that they took.

I hope you all enjoy!

Precautions or not, I don't care how "safe" you think it is, you gotta have something wrong with your brain to get that close! If that volcano decides to burp even just a little of that lava your way....you're gonna be cooked....cuz there ain't enough asbestos in the world to protect you.

In reading the article with it, some of it is due to special photography lenses.  However, that being said, the guy did have to use O2 canisters because of the lack of oxygen.

An airline fed refractory suit is good for up to 45 minutes in temperatures up to 900 degrees. And that close to a caldera there would be a ton of carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide outgassing.

That film reminds me of camping up in Volcanoes National Park on the big island. We were camped about a quarter mile away from the active caldera. It was wild with the red glow and the red hot bolus being kicked into the air. What a view.

The big pain in the patootie was getting the "Pele's Hair" out of the camping gear after the trip. Fine streamers of volcanic glass tossed up and landing on the campsite. The stuff gets into everything.

That sounds awesome!

Vulcanologists have the highest mortality rate of any scientists.

It's amazing how those guys will walk across the crust on a caldera and dip out samples at their feet.  Gives me the willies!

(not talkin' about the white cock!)

That video reminds me of a video game!

Interesting.

I would have guessed scientists that studied oceans/fish, timber, or agriculture to have the highest rates.
