Thought this might be a cool subject if it hasn't been done before on here.

Here's a great music video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xbt30UnzRWw called "Whip It" by a New Wave band called Devo. It was a single released in 1980. The song is good IMHO and I believe it was their biggest hit. The video is an excellent rather surreal stylised piece which was controversial (i.e. deemed sexist by some) at the time. Apparently the video itself is based on a story in a magazine from the 1960's that the guys in the band read about an actor whose career is failing and he started a "dude ranch" in the country with his wife where people would pay to hang out. Every day for entertainment he would whip the wife's clothes off with a bullwhip without hurting her. lol The lyrics are about dealing with challenges but clearly play with BDSM imagery:

another Bjork music vid, a lil more "racy", needle play oh my
as I side note, I've had the pleasure of meeting mark mothersbaugh a few times.

Mark Mothersbaugh is an interesting chap - he has been involved with a huge number of soundtrack projects outside of Devo. I picked up a CD of their early gigs. One of their first in 1974 cleared the audience of hippies who were waiting for Sun Ra and they were interrupted at the end! lol

The first Bjork video is interesting if a bit peculiar. Definitely has a sort of bondage theme (if I'm interpreting it correctly). Couldn’t access the other vid as it seems to require a youtube account to do so! I found this video http://video.mynet.com/bayw/DVJ-Bazuka-Fetish/489119/ by accident sometime ago - its by someone called DVJ Bazuka (apparently a Russian female er… “DVJ” - Disc video jockey). In part the video is standard fetishy soft core material but also uses electro play as a reference.

Probably the best known extreme BDSM themed music video is “Happiness in Slavery” by Nine Inch Nails from 1992 which features the now deceased Bob Flanagan - http://www.vimeo.com/3556108 – looking at it again reminds me how extreme it is – its actually sort of snuffy IMO and surprisingly explicit with a full frontal of the Bobster! lol Clearly its way too extreme for MTV even today.

Never heard of Vast before but the track is a good one and the video is pretty cool.

Depeche Mode’s track “Behind the Wheel” (from the 1987 album Music for the Masses) is clearly about dominance and submission. The music (doomy 80’s synth pop) makes it one of the best songs about this subject IMO. The video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mABbjwhOVvc is arguably not a BDSM themed music video but it is dealt in a way that is about as subtle and symbolic as it can get (one driving another whose car had broken down and was lost until then), which is fitting for the style. Its nicely shot by Anton Corbijn, sort of in the style of films by Fellini and references 1950’s Italy. Depeche Mode covered this theme in songs a few times when it was relatively rare to do so, most famously on Black Dress but that isn’t nearly as good a song IMHO. Their darker later 80’s stuff like this explains why they are still rated highly as a band today unlike a lot of others 80’s synthy bands.

Here’s a long track by Prince called “Automatic” - http://www.twitvid.com/FPSL9 - from his 1982 album “1999” which features his female members of his band whipping him in a S&M session. It starts about four and a half minutes into the clip. The video was considered too extreme for MTV so oddly “The video was not released through conventional outlets but circulates amongst collectors” according to the Wiki entry. Perhaps for this reason the track was only released as a single in Australia around the time. It must be one of the earliest videos to feature this kind of thing in a very overt way.

Not quite a BDSM music video (probably a mimed TV appearance in 1966) but still worth posting up IMHO
