Experiment: Turn Off Traffic Lights

Drivers in the US can learn a lot from these Brits! This is pretty awesome and should definitely be tried in many places throughout the world. There a many places I near me and that I have traveled to that have far too many traffic controls. Many that create a very poor traffic flow and plenty of driver angst! What are your thoughts?

This is quite amazing. I wonder if it would translate to cities in the US where, despite pedestrians theoretically having "right of way," drivers just run people over. Atlanta and Tampa come to mind.

What is the drivers test like in the UK? The drivers test in the US are a joke, at least in SC. Study this book, memorize it then click the corresponding answer on the computer. Here is your permit to drive. Then its up to the parents to further teach the kids, parents by and large are getting worse and worse, they can let alone support themselves but another living being is dependent on them?!

Also i believe the percentage of manual shift cars is significantly higher in the UK, correct? It is my opinion that people who drive manual shift cars are more in tune with their driving and are more attentive to the road and their surroundings. Driving a manual shift car is a skill that takes practice, driving an automatic is well, idiot proof.

I think you can tell where im going with this. If you turned off the traffic lights at a major intersection in the US, disaster will ensue. Ive seen many a time people cant even navigate a 4 way stop.

There is a sort of similiar experiment where I live. The corner my apartment is on is 2 one way streets with no stop signs. Therefore everyone is supposed to stop and use right of ay rules for who goes through. Most people do. However some people simply zoom through at full speed, apparently assuming oncoming traffic has a stop sign. So far only pets have been hit but there have been lots of squealing brakes and blasting horns. So here at least we need stop signs to control traffic for safety.

Here you don't get a light until after a certain number of accidents. So I'm surprised they've had less accidents as a result.

I know that Germany is pretty strict on licenses.

I thought PA was easier then IL. But more sticky on insurance/inspections. Tho IL might have caught up. PA used to have higher fines- now IL does.

That's always a bad scene around here too, hunk. Give us a power failure and the world goes to hell. The PD posts cops at the major intersections, else the streets would start gridlocking.

I dont think our streets- well in PA are designed like that. The turn abouts.

In the UK, the theory test, done on a computer doesn't give you a license. You can't just hop in a car and drive , even if you pass. To gain a license to drive here, you have to obtain the theory test before you can take the practical test.

Your parents, friends or relatives can aid you with your training by sitting beside you as you practise (they have to have held a license themselves for 3 yrs) but no matter what, you still have to pass a test with a qualified examiner.

Manual shift cars are the norm in the UK...... automatic cars are used but they are nowhere NEAR as prevalent. If you pass a test for an automatic shift , you aren't allowed to drive a manual shift car with that license.

You cannot drive below the age of 17 yrs old.

It's an expensive business to learn to drive, pass the test and to be able to drive as a youngster here.The insurance for a new driver of 17 yrs old is extremely high.

I don't know of places in the US that allow you to get your first license without a road test. When moving from state to state you just take the law test.

Some states require periodic road tests after a certain age, IIRC.

Ok well thats pretty much the same here, you go in and take a written/computer test and you get a "permit", you are only allowed to drive with an adult who has had a license for x amount of years and only can drive during certain hours. Then after a period of time, 6 weeks i believe, you can take the road test with a state official to obtain a license to drive. I believe you can get a permit when you turn 15, not sure.

But i think we would have many better drives if more cars were manual shift rather than automatic. Also one license covers both cars over here.

Seems to me that the reliance on drivers is the same as US traffic roundabouts . . . which didn't work well or we wouldn't have stopped using them and opted for traffic lights. The example was a low speed intersection and seems like a unique junction. I just don't think you can wipe out the timed traffic lights to save money and still maintain speeds of 45 to 55 mph on US highways.

Here in Wisconsin they are taking out stop signs and putting in round-abouts. About 100 of them have been here in the last 2 years..
