I didn't know where else to ask or who to ask, so hopefully I can get a bit of guidance.

I was diagnosed with asthma over a year ago and before that I enjoyed breath play and control, a LOT. Now, I am kinda scared of what may happen. I haven't tried it since I was diagnosed so I don't know of any special precautions other than the 'common sence' ones that are normally in place.

Does anyone have any ideas or expereince with this?? Any help or info would be most helpfull.

When I do breathplay, I give my sub/slave a "2 tap" call. When they tap my arm twice, it means they feel they are at the point they *need* air. Then, how long I continue to deny them air, is at my discretion.
If I had an asthmatic partner, I would continue the 2 tap, but I would also implement another form of communiation for in case they felt this was significant to their asthma. Perhaps 2 taps for normal play, 3 taps if you feel like the asthma is kicking in. Or 2 taps for normal play, but drop the cloth/ball/bell if you think it's the asthma.

Also, I have a kink friendly doctor and I would ask his opinions and advice. I'd also learn as much as possible about asthma and breathing disorders. Find out what triggers the asthma attacks and eliminate those triggers completely before, during, and after breath play. Take it slow for a while and ease back into it after my partner and I had become more familiar with how the asthma affects playtime. And of course, always have the appropriate needed medical kit nearby (which may or may not need the contents changed or updated since the new diagnosis.)

That's the best I can offer. Hope it helps and hope others chime in their advice as well.

i have had asthma for most of my life and as such severely limit any breathe play i do, especially when i did not have my asthma under control. With newer medicines, my asthma has gotten to the place that i almost never have to use my rescue inhalator. That being said however, if i do any form of breathe play, i always have my rescue inhalator handy, as it is still possible to trigger an attack with too much strenuous activity. Also Proprietrix suggestions i thought were very good. i also tell whoever i am playing with that i have asthma and what my asthma attacks tend to look like, so they can know by sight as well as by signals.

My asthma is slowing getting to where it is controlled, I hope. I was barly able to make it up 7 floors while taking the stairs last week, I hit the 2nd floor and had to stop and use my rescue inhaler. I use to be able to take 10 or 12 before that happened. I carry that on me now like I carry my cell phone, on my hip, literally.
Any partner I play with is aware of my asthma, no need to have that dropped on someone at the last minute.
Thanks for the help. I hope more people will chime in as well.

May i ask what your doctor has prescribed for your asthma? Since going on Advair (which is an inhaled steroid) and singular, my use of my rescue inhalator has gone from going through one a month to using it 3 times in 6 months.

Advair + Albuterol for a rescue inhaler. I was on Qvar for almost a year, but it stopped working a few months ago, I started Advair yesterday, I know it will take a while to work.

On average, I use my rescue inhaler about once a day, sometimes more. Maybe its the poultion in this area that is making it worse or the excessive rain we have been getting.

I really want to get back to breathplay once I find a parnter. I also want to be as safe as I can and still be able to play.

After a few days on the singulair and the Advair, i felt an big difference. i also have an albuterol inhalator, but rarely use it. i am not sure where you live, but it may also be allergy related as well, as i have found that my allergies kick off the asthma.

I've had asthma all my life and never had a single problem with doing any breath play.  Just make sure the person you play with knows of your condition and your inhaler is readily available just in case.

Great post! i have asthma and have avoided breath play because of it. Of course i tell any partner i play with of my condition, what to look for, and where my rescue inhaler is. i had a scare once with someone i trusted. i was having an attack and he didn't let me get to my inhaler right away. It was my scariest asthma attack and needless to say that Dom is no longer in my life. i found it very difficult to trust again after that and was lucky to find a wonderful Dom who was very kind and understanding.

Anyway, i am interested to see what is posted because i have an interest in breath play eventually. i just have flash backs of that time and am very cautious.

i am on singulair with an albuterol rescue inhaler and so far things are under control. Leaving my cats behind in my divorce also helped ( i didn't realize how much my cat allergy was contributing to my attacks). My worst asthma is when i am swimming and i have to keep my inhaler near the pool at all times. Also, if i laugh a lot.. watch out. It gets me every time.

i have a friend with severe asthma....whenever she takes part in any kind of play, after making sure her partner knows what to do in case of an attack, she always holds a rubber ball in her hand....if she is in any kind of asthma distress she drops the ball and the scene must stop immediately....

That is scary.  I was dx with asthma last summer.  It's a huge learning curve, getting it under control, dealing with attacks, etc.  I showed my Dom how I use my inhaler/spacer, so he knows (just in case).  It's only a concern to me because I really enjoy bondage (I've never tried breath play) and if an attack happened rapidly, I'd want him to know how to help me.

Slaverosebeauty - I am curious, have you tried (or do you take) singulair?  It's a "maintenance" medication for asthma and it also works on allergies.

I have not tried singular, as it interacts with another medication I am currently on.
Since I have stopped excessive working out [that sucks] asthma is improving, but I REALLY REALLY want to get back into breath play.

KatyLied, I am in the same boat as you are, its a HUGE learning curve, one that you have to pay attention too. My child even knows where my inhaler is and my bestfriend, justincase. My bestfriend had to use that knowledge a while back, I'm glad she remembered.
I do like the ball idea, but once I go into subspace, I get really heavy so I would drop the ball accidently.

Ah, it was a suggestion because it really made a difference for me, when they changed my allergy med to singulair.  The best thing you can do, in general,  is identify your triggers, and possibly use the inhaler if you know you are going to be around them.  It's much better than waiting until after when you are seized up and wheezing.  Some people use the inhaler before they workout, you may want to ask your doc if that would be appropriate for you.

Good luck!

That is the suggestion that my asthma and allergy doctor made as well, to use the inhaler before exercising or exerting myself so i wouldn't start wheezing. i have also found singular to be really helpful as well. i hope you and your doctor can find whatever combination works to get your asthma completely under control.

My Dr. also suggested i use my inhaler before being exposed to triggers. Excercise is a big one for me (as i mentioned swimming) and i have noticed that my symptoms are reduced significantly when i use my inhaler about 30 min before i excercise.

Not being able to breathe is very scary. i am just grateful that there are meds out there to help us lead normal lives.

I am thinking for along the lines of breath play/control. I can handle the asthma attacks for working out and the like; since I enjoy breathe play and control, I wanted to know if anyone has any expereinces with this and how they handled and did both. .

Ido breathplay, with a partner or alone, every day. (At the very least, I start my days by choking myself before I leave bed, and normally before I fall asleep).  I also have severe asthma, and carry an inhaler at all times.  I've never had an asthma attack triggered by breathplay.

No matter what kind of play you are participating in your partner needs to know where your inhaler is and how to use it.  They also need to know the signs of when it has progressed to the point of needing medical attention.  I have had sever asthma my whole life.  Any specific question about the condition I will be more than happy to answer.  I would get my asthma completly controled before doing breath play.  Asthma is not something to be joked around with, and just because something hasnt caused you problems in the past doesn't mean it won't in the future.  My triggers have changed over the years so just keep a close eye on it.  Also, try to get a peak flow meter.  It will make you aware of how your breathing is doing before you start to feel symptoms.  Your doctor can either give you one or write a script for one.  Just depends on the doctor.  They average about five or ten bucks.  A very worth while investment.

Hello There,
I'd like to recommend you having the Dom/Domme you play with aware of CPR techniques as well. If the inhaler does not work I'd like to have the the comfort of a back up.
