Keeping eyes open - 10/17/2010 5:11:54 PM

Status: offline 		Anyone know what issues, if any, may need to be considered when deciding whether or not and/or how long to force someone to keep their eyes open? (Not talking about staying awake--talking about literally just not blinking or closing them.)

Status: offline 		You can't. Blinking is an automatic response to dry eyes. Like sneezing, it really doesn't matter how much you yell she may not sneeze as you blow pepper up her nose, she's still going to.

But dry eyes, eye irritation, tearing, all of which require lots of blinking to repair.

Status: offline 		Aside from the dry eyes, irritation, tearing, etc there's also the risk of an individual's extreme irritation with someone trying to control automatic body responses.  Talk about setting someone up to fail.

Status: offline 		Ok, well, I had thought it would be assumed that natural blinking would be prevented, but I was wrong. So, that matter aside, I'd still like some information on the timeframe before any kind of damage sets in and by what mechanisms damage might occur.

Anyone?

Status: offline 		I doubt you'll find an exact time. However, if you do choose to pursue it, it can cause severe eye strain, bad headaches, possible light sensitivity and irritation. The military (apparently) has trained some people to avoid blinking in interrogation scenarios but that's for extreme situations and with professional training. Sounds like a bad idea that could potentially cause some permanent damage to eyes. Especially if you're using some artificial method to keeps eyes open. Eyes and eyelids are extremely sensitive to damage. Best to stay away altogether.

Status: offline 		Sorry, but I think this is a really dumb thing to be asking about. It is more in line with a fantasy that cannot be fulfilled.

Taping someone's eyes open, is sort of like a horror movie or serial killer plot than a fun thing to do.

Status: offline 		During the second cataract operation, they had to use twice the normal amount of local anesthesia because I was still blinking. Trust me, tape will not work. But if you do have access to some super strong tape, she will rip her eyelid. Requiring you to transport her to the hospital and pay for the ophthalmic surgeon to repair it.

Status: offline 		OP, you (and Kana) need to remember that eyes blink for a reason - to wet and lubricate the eyeball, and you deprive it of that wetness for X amount of time you are going to damage said eyeball.  Blinking also provides oxygen to the cornea

sooooooooooooooo ........................................... allowing the eyeball to dry out is a very bad idea.   and with that in mind, i wouldn't even try to venture a guess at how long without blinking won't damage the eye.

Status: offline 		Please keep this in mind the cornea is supplied oxygen and nutrients by the tear film which is moved across the eye by blinking. By preventing the blink you could cause corneal damage which can create scarring which would lead to perminent vision loss.
At minumum you can create severe eye iritation and inflamation which could lead to seeing an eye doctor for treatment.

Status: offline 		The eyes can become infected if the tears don't wash the eyeball enough.

The only time I've ever had to force someone to keep there eyes open was to remove a slinter from a kid's eye. I used Mil Spec duct tape. And before I get lambasted for not having it done at an E.R.. it was a half day hike to get back to anywhere you could communicate to get any help.

I've seen the results of using superglue to keep eyelids open.. it isn't pretty and should NOT be done.
