On this and other adult sites I sometimes frequent, I've been seeing warnings like the following (with variations) more and more often. None of my web crawling has shown me any REAL reason for these warnings and without further data, I'm ready to call urban legend.

WARNING: Sydney University and Any and all other institutions using this or any FriendFinder site or its associated sites for projects - You do not have permission from me to use any of my profile or pictures in any form or forum both current and future. If you have or do, it will be considered a violation of my privacy and will be subject to legal action.

( I suggest the rest of you post this notice)

Four questions:
Are there any documented studies that have been KNOWN to use profile information from adult sites without permission?
Are they STILL doing so?
Do these posted warnings actually have any LEGAL meaning beyond rights that already exist to pursue action against such use?
Do you know anything about this that I haven't covered?

Not as far as I know.  One person starts something and other "sheeples" follow suit.
I find it silly.

I suggest you read my profile.

I also suggest anyone who has that warning in their profile has don you the favor of taking themselves out of the, "dating pool".

I can get pictures off the web of lovely people doing every conceivable sex act known to man.  Why someone would rather steal a pic of me in my bathroom holding a cell phone is beyond me.

I once saw that disclaimer on a profile where every single pic was taken off the web.

Not that I've ever heard of

No

Seeing that disclaimer in a profile makes me mentally deduct 50 IQ points from the person who owns said profile... that's about it

I did, and thanks! I needed that!

Does it hurt anything to have it there? Having been a blogger for years, and having seen some of the shit that happens on both vanilla and adult sites, I figure it's kind of like a small bit of insurance. Just because someone hasn't done something, doesn't mean that someone never WILL do it.

It's like putting your name on your photo. I don't think anyone has ever stolen my photo for their nefarious purposes, let's face it, I'm just not that hawt, but I have know other people to have their photos stolen and used in scam accounts. So for a while, on another adult spot, I had all of my photos watermarked.

Could I legally take action? Probably not. But if it stops one person from being a git, then I think a few lines of text are worth it.
If it takes me out of someone's dating pool, then I'll count myself as lucky.

Yup.

Besides, you can't control the whole world. That's just for multinational corporations.

Your photos are not as valuable as you think. Most of the spammers steal photos either from porn site or from popular vanilla dating sites. By the way, TinEye Reverse Image Search is a pretty good tool to spot fake profiles. Whatever you type in your profile is not a great literary work either; thus, you got nothing to worry about.

If someone is really doing a study, they will need aggregate data from hundreds of profiles. They won't care about identifying information - they just need anonymous statistics. Again, you have nothing to worry about if you are part of such statistics.

Rosalyn, what's the point?  Anyone who would steal an image is likely using it for illegal scams.  They're violating God knows how many laws, and copyright infringement is the least of their concerns.  I doubt that they're even in the US.

1. Nobody would steal my pic because there are better ones available.
2. If they DID steal my pic, then they'll be using it for purposes so illegal that copyright infringement won't scare them.
3. I don't like reading threats on a profile, even if they aren't intended for me, especially if they're pointless threats.

I wouldn't say what I did with your picture was illegal......

So the answer is that NO ONE has heard or seen or known of any such studies, right? Into the urban legend file it goes! Thank you!

The grain of truth is that the University of Sydney (not Sydney University) has engaged in major sexuality studies for years now.  One example link here:

http://www.usyd.edu.au/news/84.html?newsstoryid=1277

They collect data by calling people up and interviewing them, or interviewing them face to face.  No legit scientist would assume that just because a profile is marked "Asian female 106 lbs" that it's really being operated by a petite Asian woman, even if there is a photo of Sora Aoi attached to the profile.

That said, there are lazy college students who post on the forums from time to time, requesting information for a term paper.  They may well use your profile to defend some B+-worthy thesis they write.  Eh.  It's about the same category of "risk" as the fact that your photo will produce a certain amount of semen because there are guys who will jerk off to your PVC dress.

Thank you, RedMagic1, that's about all I've been able to dig up, too. Neither of those types of research seem to warrant any sort of warning on anyone's profile. Also, unless I'm mistaken, those warnings don't mean anything at all in any legal sense.
