For the last couple of years my nose is always blocked up, it's either one nostril or the other, and I can breath through both, but one is always at half capacity or less. Anyway sometimes in the morning when I roll over from left to right, I get this awful sensation of a weight shifting an the nose that was up, but is now down the pressure settles into it.

Why does the pressure shift when I roll over?

I would get tested for allergies. I had the same problem. Found out I was allergic to mold and dust mites. I put allergy coverson the pillows and mattress. Additionally take a nasal steriod called Flonase. I now wake it with a clear head :).

Allergies. Put the head of the bed up on 4 inch blocks and you should drain during the night. I take Claritin daily. And yes, allergy covers on the mattress and pillows.

I second using the neti pot I don't personally have that issue but I have a friend that has severe allergies and she lives by the neti pot. They are like 12 dollars at walmart and it flushes out your sinuses and it doesn't use all those chemicals and steroids to do it it uses saline water. I think it would probably feel weird the first time or two you use it but from what I have read about it it is well worth it.

I don't think it's allergies there's nothing else that. Would go with allergies, like itching or sneezing or runny nose. Just them being clogged all the time. I do have. A netti pot here somewhere n I'll dig it out see if it takes care of some of the clogging.

It also may be turbinate congestion - and the congestion can move from left to right and back again when you roll over. It will feel like a stuffy nose, and typically block breathing from one nostril.  On the other hand, when my sinus's block up, i can feel fluid move in my cheek bones, not my nose.
So your issue may be either one.

It could also be congestion from acid reflux. I suggest the neti pot and raising your bed...it will help immensely.

I know those symptoms well. What I have learned...

Do not use decongestants like Pseudafed or anything containing Pseudophenadrine HCL. That dries up the nasal passages and causes the tiny openings to the sinuses to get irritated too easy and inflame and seal up gunk in the sinuses. A good Otolarangologist (Used to be called an ENT for Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist) will tell you about this. Also, Pseudophenedrine will sent the blood pressure skyrocketing which will cause any swelling to get worse.. i.e. irritated sinus passages.

A Neti pot, or the cheap solution is to get a rubber bulb from one of the ear cleaning kits. Flush 0.7% warm saline for best effect (1/4 teaspoon non iodized salt to the pint of water).

Humibid and Muscinex are now over the counter expectorants. Both are tablet delivery methods for Guiffasien, an expectorant. An expectorant simply thins the mucus and makes it easier to get it out.

If you can swing it, get a sleep study. Chronic sinus blockage can cause the airway to block when sleeping and give you apnea. Long term apnea causes the blood pressure to go sky high, you are tired and lethargic all the time, and tend to gain weight at the drop of a hat. A CPAP does wonders for letting you get a good night's sleep even when the sinuses are sloshing.

If you can, find a doctor that won't try to get you to tough it out when you really need some antibiotics to get rid of the fermenting goo in the sinuses.

I'm talking about what works for me here. My service with Uncle Sugar's Canoe Club left me with some serious chemical burns up the snoot. I get a couple of infections in the left maxillary sinus each year and get clogged sinuses and ears at the drop of a dusty wind. When the maxillary sinus gets inflamed, the opening is close enough to the eustacian tube that it closes off and the middle ear gets fluid in it. Result, a sloshing sound every time you roll over in bed. Does this sound familar?

In 1988, I had a Navy Medical Officer that kept shoving pseudafed and tylenol at me and sending me back to work. The result was that it moved from sinus infection to life threatening meningitis. What I learned from that is that spinal fluid comes up the spine bathing the nerves then into the brain and drains into the sinus cavities then, if working right, down the throat. When you have a sinus infection, or just clogged sinuses, the fluid in the sinuses can back up into the brain and spine.

Bottom line... do someting to drain things without causing further irritation. A humidifier to keep the nasal passages moist when sleeping can help. Flushing the nasal passages can help. Get medication for any infection so things don't migrate to worse conditions.

Now, there is an old home remedy to help open the sinuses that sounds silly but actually promotes drainage. Stand, put your head down between your knees, and brush your hair from the back of the head to the front. I know it sounds silly but it can get things draining. The things you can learn from a grandmother that grew up with an 1800s doctor for a father.

Ok, I'm not a medic, I'm in health physics. Go to a medical professional. But I'm sharing what works for me with a condition that fits your description of what is going on with you.

Stefan

Sounds more sinus related than allergies to me. I went through every kind of testing from allergies, sleep study, CAT scan of sinuses, etc... and basically the final decision was a. my mucus was typically too think to drain normally even though my nasal structure was fine and b. I have very very few true allergies, but a heck of alot of sensitivities. My sensitivities cause clogging and pain when explosed (floral scents are the worst). I don't get the typical allergy symptoms with this at all. The nasal corticol stearoids are great (like Flonase etc), but they give me constant nose bleeds.

The best advice i had from an older doctor was to put me on 1200mg of humibid (now over the counter as Mucinex) 3 times a day. I went from having sinus infections every 30-60 days (which would result in 14-30 days of antibiotics, then we'd start again next month) to maybe 1-2 a year when i've had a cold that just lingered a little too long. I say talk to your doctor, but mine have always said that the guifenesin is safe with most health issues and other medications.

Good luck!

Excellent information, suffering from the same issues for years. Will try Mucinex. Salt rinsing the sinuses really does help, too.

I'll also see if I can get my dr to check my nostrils next time I am in the office. I asked her during a phone appointment an she said they're probably dry, do a saline rinse, but it's beyond just "dry" one entire nostril is almost always blocked off to good proper breathing, and the odd thing is, the nostrils play switch lol. It's not always the same nostril, at any given time or hour  it could be the left then switch to the right in an hour lol.

But the main cause for turbinate congestion is allergic rhinitis, so no, you won't get itching or hives or other symptoms.

I'm assuming no one in your house smokes. Even if they smoke outside, you can have sufficient allergic reaction to cause sinus infections as a second hand smoker. Or, as I discovered this year, as a third hand. My kid's best friend's father smokes. It comes home on my son's clothing and I get a sinus infection.

I can't stand a neti pot so I use a personal steamer, holds maybe a quarter cup of water which you lean over and breathe until it's all gone, 15 minutes or so. As a kid my grandmother would put a towel over our heads as we were bent over a basin of boiling water, I prefer the little steamer.

Nope, nobody in the house smokes, fortunatly we all think it's a nasty disgusting habit.

I remember the whole towl over head bent over steaming pot or what ever was holding the water lol. Nowdays my dad is a fan of putting a cup in the micro making it steaming hot and carefully sniff it till it's cooled.

Yeah, sounds like chronic sinusitis to me - see an ENT and/or an Allergist if you can to figure out the cause.  In the meantime, the neti pot will definitely help, and if you don't like using it there are spray-type irrigation devices on the market that do the same thing and are a little easier to work.  You might also want to look into this stuff called "Umcka Cold Care" - it's an herbal extract that can help loosen up phlegm so your sinuses aren't so full of gunk.  It works pretty well for me, and my doctor swears it's magic.  Some pharmacies carry it, as do most health food stores.

yeast can be a chronic sinus problem. think of this especially if you are diabetic,  insulin resistant or eat a high simple carb diet. (or if you have yeastie beastie issues elsewhere or frequently take antibiotics)

stuffy nose can be the only symptom of a milk allergy. you can try removing dairy from your diet and see if that helps.

Lev I don't get to much dairy in my diet that I am aware of, I don't drink milk, or eat cheese or yogurt to much, nor eat ice cream hardly, are there any other sources of dairy one could be un aware of consuming?

Check your prepackaged food for dairy.  Anything you drink.  Dairy is in some weird places.
