PA,

The need for them is determined by a blood test.

I am on them.
My level was low.

It took awhile of tweaking to get the right dose.

Low thyroid can make one feel lethargic and have aches, weight gain and just feel crappy.

edit to add:
What happened with your blood sugar test btw?

You can get dry skin dry hair, aches and psychiatric symptoms. It is amazing how much  difference it can make once you get the right blood levels.

I was put on them at one time. I set new records for projectile vomiting.
Thyroid pills don't seem to work on Frolich's Syndrome. <grin> And the drugs that do work for that give you a mustache in the 6th grade.

I kept telling my doctor for years that I was hypothryoid, but he wouldn't put me on meds because my tests kept coming back normal. I changed doctors and he saw right away that I was hypothyroid. I've gained a lot of weight because of the lack of thyroid and quitting smoking three years ago. At the moment I'm on .75 synthroid and the weight is slowly coming off. I'm having problems with some hair loss and fatigue still, but get re-evaluated soon. Oh, I also still have dry skin.

Okay, synthroid is a good one, and it is cheaper usually not using insurance (if you have a $20 copay or whatever). Also, do not let them run an iodine test! It is medical barbarism and kills off your thyroid, making you chemically dependent indefinitely on prescriptions.

Women who become hypothyroid as a result of pregnancy can't go off the pills anyway. It's a lifelong condition.
I suppose you also advise diabetics not to test blood sugar for fear they'll become 'dependent' on insulin?

You really need a lot more info.

the blood work isn't always accurate. symptoms count. esp low body temperature. if your blood work looks normal get a reverse T3 test done. your body produces T4 which it converts to the active form of T3 but some people convert T4 to an inactive form called rT3. If your rT3 is high you will need bio-identical T3 or dessicated animal thyroid. Many times thyroid glands quit working because of adrenal stress or iodine insufficiency.  Taking a good iodine supplement like Iodoral can help.  There are special vitamins you need to take along with Iodoral so be sure to consult a knowledgeable doctor or naturopath before starting.

I had the same problem for years!  I was in my early 20s and didn't know a thing about this stuff.  My doctor told me one day "well, your levels are finally low enough that I can give you meds."  Our conversation was like... Wait, you've known for *years* that I was at a borderline level and never mentioned it to me despite my saying I was exhausted all the time?  I've since found out that if I don't have my meds, I cry all the time and I feel like a caged animal - that makes me pretty dang nasty!  The hard part is that I have no control over it, and it's like some weird alien comes in and takes over my personality.

I still have really dry skin - especially in the winter, and my hair is not thick like it used to be (but I'm by no means going bald!).

I always tell people who worry about this that hypothyroidism isn't about an addiction to meds.  It's just saying your body isn't making enough of someething it needs.  I mean, heck, I hate that I'm dependent on water, air, and gravity.  You know?

best,
sunshine

I have hypothyroid so I take synthroid medication every day, once a day for the rest of my life..I gained ALOT of weight before I was aware of my thyroid condition..I felt sooo down and out, the dry brittle hair and constipation..not a nice condition but much better once you are on meds..

Been on them since I was 14, with 20 they removed 90% of my thyroid glands, I've been told that I need to take them for the rest of my life, if I take them regularly I am absolutely fine, sometimes the dose needs adjusting.

About 4 years ago I moved and the docs here just did the simple tests, not the reverse ones, declared I am fine and they will not give me the pills, within 2 years I became almost a wreck, depression ridden, joint aches, dull hair, bad skin, weight gain, I was basically going to pieces. Went back to my old doctor, they told me my nodules grew back, I need to get back on them ASAP, sent a filthy letter to the docs who refused it to me, I'm back on them now, feeling fine, energetic and back to my normal self and seeing a specialist who monitors my condition.

The other docs tried to put me on antidepressants, which would have worsened the situation because they also tend to block the thyroid, tried to tell me that I have an abnormally early menopause despite the hormone readings being fine...
