i fix people's computers and technology for a living, as my own company Missing Pieces. i specialize in discretely cleaning PCs from 'our' community, safely and with discretion, so that people like me don't have to take their PCs to a store full of teenaged Geeks, that are going to stare at our personal pictures and post them to the internet! i'm also much better and more affordable than any Geek outfit and i even do mail order! I actually misread your title as "PVCs discretely cleaned!" and thought that they weren't that difficult to wipe off. But since I don't play with them I was willing to see what the professional cleaner had to say about it.

As a computer pro myself I can see why you'd offer the service. I had what I call a "Homer Simpson Moment" where I slap my forehead and go "Doh!" because I could suddenly see why some people in the community could use your service.

Let me make a suggestion.

Why not write an essay on "preventive browsing and email" that could provide the less technical people in the community how they can improve their security with a few small not-very technical steps. Perhaps tell them that erasing things doesn't make them disappear and then recommend some free DOD mil-spec program to really zap them. Or tell them how they can use the "search" utility to sweep their disks looking for certain types of files. Or how they can label all their scene files to make them easy to locate and destroy should the need arise.

I'm sure that such an essay, written by a computer pro like yourself who is also part of the community, would be widely republished on the net since it would contain lots of useful information. Now of course there's no reason why you have to do everything free but I also think you'd find that the paper became useful advertising for your business. A lot more people would read of your service, and, seeing the advice you gave already, would have a higher appreciation of your professionalism. In short, they'd be more likely to use your service for higher security than they could provide themselves, even with your free advice. Then, as your advice spread throughout the community you could also expect to get word-of-mouth business as people mentioned you to friends who had need for your services.

It gives people a chance to self-help themselves, while showing a bit what i can do beyond that, helping to 'spread the word'. i've got sections on Anti-virus stuff and the Internet in general, video and even shopping advice! lol Though i guess i should add my own new Amazon-powered Missing-Pieces Technology Store to that:

...since with so many of the big chains going under, lack of competition has left me a bit dismayed at current lack of REAL sales. Prices are UP and they are advertising them as if they were GOOD prices! Worst Buy is the 'worst' offender here.

But maybe i'll do a special page, just for 'us in the community' on our special problems in this area. Like i said, great idea!

Actually there might also be a few bucks in discreetly saving certain things. I would never want to give up my collection.

Oh yeah! i do THAT service too. In fact just had a RASH of hard drives coming in. Only had 1 so far I couldn't save without ever having to open any up. (THAT i don't do, no clean room facility here :-) That's far more important really to people than the PC itself.

I used to do computer repair too, and there always seem to be a couple beaners with a laptop repair shop and low, low prices nearby who do have a clean room to take care of the hard cases. Though I do live in Florida, so I guess I've got my slurs wrong. All latinos are supposed to be cubans 'round here, not beaners, regardless of where they actually come from.

Anyway.

Fuckin' home depot my ass, those boys are damned good entrepreneurs. Carlos Mencia ain't keeping up with the times. God bless illegal immigrants, I am all about what they bring to the table.
