OK, big bombshell of a revelation tonight...

I'm back in San Antonio getting a tooth pulled and waiting on pain relievers to recover when mom comes in, having spent the last hour going through the old German heritage treasure chest her mom and dad gave her. Our thick German heritage has, as we all know, some very dark blights on it. Sure enough, her now deceased father had collected quite a few novelties that he felt would be valuable in years to come.

With a special hatred for the Nazis, he kept two leather floggers that smell as old as they look. The blood stains can still be seen. Mom recounted the history of them. My grandfather told mom he was around to collect these from a Nazi camp where the actual boxcars went through. Supposedly, he collected these near the border town of Ceske-Tesin in early 1944 of his travels.

So, stuff is being given away to her brother and sister. They freak out and don't want them, so...they go to me. :O I take them enthusiastically. And then, staring at the blood stains, it almost creeps me out. Should I add these to my tool bag? How should I feel if these are behind my being transported in the "box car" to subspace?

* I tried to upload the photos, but I'm not sure it worked.

Ohhhh....That looks all kindsa spiffy and full of awesomeness.  Personally, I say have them appraised.  Never know.  May be worth something.  And if not, play away!

If those are what your mother claims they are, they were used to punish Jews for being Jewish.  Do you really want that kind of bad karma on your skin?  I know I wouldn't.

Oh, and a quick Google search turned up a concentration camp just a few hours away from that town.  Look for Lety in the Czech Republic.

A friend of mine rec'd an unusual artifact of the Nuremberg Trials.  It was the sign-in book of the wives making their last visits to their husbands that were to be executed the next morning for their war crimes.  All the biggies were there in (now faded) pencil.

My recommendation to him is the saem as my recommendation to you - appraisal for the purpose of establishing monetary value so that the donation of the floggers to a museum can be written off your taxes.

BUT!  I have a MUCH more practical reason for suggesting donation.  If you use it / them, your attention will be distracted on any of a number of topics......  Not a good thing to be distracted in that way.

Holocaust museum donation information:  http://www.ushmm.org/research/collections/donation/  This page does NOT list such "instruments of torture" as you have.  I would imagine they don't list such simply because such items were believed all destroyed.  I think you have a REALLY important "piece of history" that the museum would be glad to own. (ESPECIALLY since you have such strong provenance.)

I have decided not to use them, and I thank you all for the input. Yes, the backstory on their terrible use would bother my headspace. I will have them looked at and get the down-low on them.

And another thing........... You say your Grandfather had a special hatred for the Nazis.  What better way to honor his hatred than to give them to the Holocaust Museum where his hatred will be shared by many.  And then there's the aspect that he might have had the intention of taking them so that they couldn't be used in such a horrific manner.  "Never again" is an important phrase.  Your donantion will help assure that those exact items will be used "Never again."

When the Berlin Wall was torn down, I purchased a chunk - whether actual or not means nothing.  What is important is that it's my statement against oppression.

Some people find oppression play erotic.  Fine.  As long as it's play.  (I get off on uniforms, okay?)  When I teach my BDSM 101 classes, I give the definition of BDSM as "Serious fun."  I'm sure that you will agree that these particular items are well out of the range of play and / or fun.

I'm very glad that you have decided to not use them yourself.  (I wonder what else might be in that box.  Don't you?)

There are a few Holocuast Muesums.  That is, not just the biggie linked to above.

BUT that one does have a list of appraisers.

Lance Hughes has made a great deal of sense with all of his posts on the subject of your grandfather's floggers. I absolutely agree with his suggestions.

But I would recommend taking them to the most expensive leather smith you can find and have them copied. Then you end up with a novelty with a great story and a hell of a flogger!
