Beck still believes it... lol

Beck is totally, incredibly, fucking insane.  As proof I offer the following:

Glenn Beck is a former "Morning Zoo" disc jockey, he was NEVER #1 in his time slot, and once when in Phoenix he called his rivals wife on air and ragged on her about her & her husband not being able to procreate......

AFTER THE WOMAN SUFFERED A MISCARRIAGE

This was a well known event in the radio industry when it happened in 1986.  That is the mentality that the GOP "base" listens and gives credence to.  Then they wonder why moderates of any leaning look askance at them.

Not that I'm a Beck supporter, but practically every 'A-list' media figure we've got has done or said some epic idiocy. It's almost a requirement for popularity, it seems to me...

Or maybe it's just part of the human condition. Plus, 25 years is a long time to hold that against a guy - I mean, murder 1 dudes can get off in less time, depending on their state and/or lawyer.

From the first paragraph of your link:

The First, the Second, and the Third World.
When people talk about the poorest countries of the world, they often refer to them with the general term Third World, and they think everybody knows what they are talking about. But when you ask them if there is a Third World, what about a Second or a First World, you almost always get an evasive answer. Other people even try to use the terms as a ranking scheme for the state of development of countries, with the First world on top, followed by the Second world and so on, that's perfect - nonsense.

Thank you for validating my position that those who use such terms are ignorant of their meaning.

Why is it nonsense? So out of over a billion people they have a few hundred million that are doing quite well? That makes them developed? Bullshit on that. Most of the people in that country have no clean place to take a dump. No education, A Caste system that is entrenched........That ain't developed.

I don't feel like he owes me an explanation on whether he did or not. Horse, dead, beatings, etc. On the other hand, the crap he's spewing on his show last week, about his retarded book? And the whole thing about assuming that 'Machine of Death' indicated a society wrapped around death, oh my god it hurts me even thinking about that. Talk about leaping to conclusions. Plus, I know some of the authors in that book, it's just a science fiction book about a machine that gives cryptic messages about how you die as a premise for short stories. The kind of stuff you find in any english classroom, but published. And Glen trashed it because it was selling better than his own book, the fucktard. THAT he could show some humility and embarrassment about.

As for the cost of Obama's trip, it seems to me that if the opposition keeps coming up with B.S. like this, Obama will be teflon don status sooner than Eminem and Reagan combined. people will just not give a shit about anything he does unless he invades Canada or something. Don't people learn from history?? I mean, I'm not much for tea parties, but if you're going to be a decent political enemy to an incumbent president show some fucking style. I hate straw men even if they're for my benefit. And I don't think the guys putting steam behind this nonsense are for my benefit, so I hate them twice.

India has the highest number of literate people of any country in the world.
They have nuclear weapons.
They make more movies than hollywood.
I do not know if you have noticed but even here in amerika there is a caste system.
We are a country of some 300 millions and we have few million who are "doing quite well" The rest are like me and thee.

India has the second highest number of people of any country in the world.

Their literacy rate is 66%. Ranked 149th in the world.

FWIW China (the only country with more people than India) has 93% literacy rate and is ranked 83rd so...not sure how that one works out. At first I thought you phrased that way to frame your argument in a more positive light but it would appear it's not even true.

Perhaps you should look a little deeper. You are an american living in australia.
Your link to wiki inidcates that the u.s. and oz both have a 99% literacy rate. In your personal experience have you found that to be true?
This link from your wiki link indicates that the u.s. has a literacy rate of 65%-85%.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Literacy_in_the_United_States

Your link indicates that india has a 63% literacy rate. With a population of 1,189,790 that would give them about 749,567,000 literate citizens. The next most populated country in the world is the u.s. with some 300,000,000 people.
As for china having a 93% literacy rate, that is not even in the same zip code with reality.

Yes. I have never met an adult who was unable to read or write.

Drawing a distinction between basic literacy and functional literacy will only apply if you're able to do the same with India, otherwise you're comparing apples to oranges.

You said that India has the largest number of literate people in the world. Do you have a link to that information? Because what I'm seeing is:

"India currently has the largest illiterate population of any nation on earth"

"About 35% of world's illiterate population is Indian and, based on historic patterns of literacy growth across the world, India may account for a majority of the world's illiterates by 2020"

As for china having a 93% literacy rate, that is not even in the same zip code with reality.

"Shortly after the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Chinese government took education as a matter of primary importance, and made enhancing the cultural quality of the people the basis of the construction of the nation.

Before 1949, China had a population of nearly 500 million, of whom 80 percent were illiterate. Proceeding from reforming the educational system, the Chinese government made an overall plan and adjusted its educational policies, with the result that the number of students increased rapidly. Currently, 91 percent of the country has instituted compulsory primary education, with nearly 99 percent of school-age children are enrolled in schools.

The dropout rate has decreased and the illiteracy rate of young and middle-aged people has declined to less than seven percent. Since the initiation of the reform and opening policies in 1978, marked by the restoration of the higher-education examination system, China's education got on the road to accelerated development. "

Well let's throw this out, I don't need to accept anyone's definition of a 3rd world country...it being quite a bit subjective.

How about this ? Is India a first, 2nd or 3rd world country ?

I say it is a 3rd world country at best. Even though is has a 'free market' [sic] capitalism, I say it because it has a population of 1.15 billion people yet has about 750 million still living practically in the dirt. So much for 'prosperity for all.'

You can say a dog is a cat.
You can make up any definition you wish it doesn't make it true.
If one is going to use words in conversation then there must be a common agreement on what words mean.
"Prosperity for all"does not exist in amerika,or india. "Prosperity for all "is not a prerequist for for admission to the 1st,2nd. or 3rd. world.
The first world was the u.s. and it's allies. The second world was Russia and its allies. The third world were the non-aligned nations.

J. D. Legge’s biography charts the life and career of Sukarno in intricate detail. Particularly strong are the descriptions of the internal machinations and wheeler dealing amongst the Indonesian political elite. Sukarno is presented as one of the major political figures of the twentieth century. If anyone should doubt this, then recall that the terms "Third World" and "Non-Aligned", terms that structured our thinking about the world for decades and perhaps still do, would probably not have existed if Sukarno had not promoted them. The former arose out of the 1955 Bandung conference, which Sukarno hosted, and the latter out of continued initiatives involving the Indonesian president.

Actually... just FYI...

http://www.rcap.org/stilllivingwithoutbasics

A neat article, based off the 2000 census. While the vast majority of people in the US do have plumbing, there is a minority who don't have a place to 'take a shit and wash their hands'.

quote:

The U.S. 2000 Census reveals that more than 1.7 million people in the United States, 670,986 households, still lack the basic plumbing facilities that most of us have come to take for granted. To some observers, these Americans may appear to be lost or  insignificant within the larger population, but the hardships they endure in their daily lives are very real.

While that number has hopefully decreased, I doubt it's been obliterated.

Incredulously,
Some Knucklehead in NJ

Not that I'm a Beck supporter, but practically every 'A-list' media figure we've got has done or said some epic idiocy. It's almost a requirement for popularity, it seems to me...

Or maybe it's just part of the human condition. Plus, 25 years is a long time to hold that against a guy - I mean, murder 1 dudes can get off in less time, depending on their state and/or lawyer.

First of all, it was a particularly heinous thing to say.

Second, as far as every media figure having done or said something stupid that is probably true.

But Beck has made a career of it by doing it on a daily basis.

I will give that one for sure. 1.7Million is a bunch of people. No way to discount that. It is a shame and yes they are hidden away where none of us really want to look at. I'd have to say that that number probably is growing as well. I stand corrected.......yet,

that surely pales in comparsion with a majority of over 1 billion people that have no basics either.
