The Governors-elect of Ohio and Wisconsin have vowed to kill federally funded passenger train projects in their states. High speed passenger rail works very well in other places but the GOP resists building the infrastructure to allow it to succeed here. In Ohio there is no passenger rail service of any kind connecting the major cities.

Kasich is a dumbass. He is already trying to backpedal on his pledge not to raise taxes. There is a 9 billion dollar shortfall in the budget that he has to patch up by July. Should be interesting to see what happens in this state when he begins trying to cut bone.

The government does subsidize air travel to many minor airports. They guarantee a certain return per year so if passenger volume and fares don't reach that level they make up the difference.

You sure seem certain that all those 'authorities' that own and operate airports of all sizes receive NO money from state or local governments.

And you forgot a big one: TSA. How about them Air Mashalls?  Due to the fact that airlines are unique in their method of taking passengers 40,000 feet in the air, and how their planes can easily become weapons. We dont have TSA on planet earth because of issues with rail or auto travel. How much did the government pay those airlines to compensate for the Sept 11 grounding? For no greater reason that the design of air travel made a ground stop on that day a requirement.  If the shoe bomber had succeeded, or the package bomber succeeded, do you think that all those major airlines would still be in business today?

Plenty of subsidy to keep those pooolanes in the air....

Kill the exports and you kill those jobs.

That's funny. We used to have lots of jobs without importing and exporting to everywhere. Oh, I see, this is the best solution you have for *after the wealth heist went down* and the damage to the middle class has been done.

Kill the imports and you aren't going to create jobs here. Perhaps you've noticed the success of discount retailing? People will buy fewer goods, and that will cost jobs as well.

What we buy now in the form of discount retailing is cheap shit made elsewhere we shouldn't be buying anyway. Your argument is jobs here that 'make things' won't come back because people are used to paying Walmart prices?

Alot of that 'success' in discount retailing is the result of putting credit cards into the hands of deadbeats who should have never had them in the first place, with the banks subsequently 'insuring' themselves against those losses from deadbeats with Wall St derivatives. That trend didn't exist before. Someday the taxpayer will be funding the 'gambling with credit cards' experiment carried out by poor people who didn't buy anything made in this country anyway.

No, we didn't. Hell, the Boston Tea Party was about protesting a monopoly global tea trade to someone else, not the tax per se.

Look, like Popeye, snark all day, but you're simply ignoring the data in favor of attitudes and unsupported opinion.

The discount point is one point, obviously, not the entire import market.

The banking issue is separate. THAT'S a mess, creating tight credit, the REAL problem with the economy at present.

But if you want a wise ass economic solution, simple---trash our currency. That will kill imports and promote exports. Sure, it will also create rampant inflation and stagnation, but hey, that's the fucking point---what you want to do sounds all nice and fuzzy, but just doesn't work the way you think it does (or should).

Five myths about U.S. exports

hey it keeps everyone busy.

devaluate the dollar and claim no tax raising?  yeh right!

its business as usual promise in one hand get shit in the other.

its a cycle every time they devaluate the dollar the taxes have to go up to get the same buying power they had the last round.

inflation should be automatic and everything from peoples checks to 401's to equities and products on the shelf should all adjust automatically. (at the cash register)

the wonderful fed could just put a factor on their site and businesses could hit for their accounting.

there would not longer be a need to ever raise taxes again.  (execpt for specific projects of course)

the whole problem is the POS monetary system that is impossible to pay off the debt.

Its good to see that they are cutting government related jobs

debt money should be completely eliminated.  Of course that would also eliminate that sucking sound of all the wealth of the middle class being sucked upward.
