Have to disagree with you here, Aqua. It's two entirely different things. Reading research material without bumping an old thread isn't that difficult. The Mods have even been good enough to put the suggestion of starting a new thread and linking the old one in the FAQ. I think where people have difficulty is that they don't read the information that's provided.

It's all right but on that point we really do disagree.

I agree with you that it's two different things. But when someone wants to open a new discussion on certain topics, they are prone to taking crap for it. For some, I really can understand - it's not like we are lacking in "wah, I never get answers to my messages", but others sometimes I really do go "Well... they weren't here for the last discussion and they would like to say their piece. They can't bump the dead thread and they get fussed at for making a new one. Jesus... "

I think at times it comes from just over excitement. They want to talk with people about it so much that they may not realize that the person they are talking to isn't here anymore.

I'd be embarrassed to tell all y'all just how long it took me to notice the Search function. It's in a small font, in a group of things in equally small font on the upper right side of the page. I just don't notice things as much if they're on the upper right of a page.

Another problem is with a search that returns a "mega-thread". How many pages, and how many threads, are people expected to read? I don't mind reading and research but I bet that as a new user I'd still get busted, especially with long-term site users.

personally I don't see any norms at all except that everyone is here because they're into bdsm in one form or another in whatever way they decide to describe it in their life. Otherwise it's a big giant mishmash of confusion and chaos.

one resounding norm:

Quite a few people on the board tend to rip apart others who haven't done the search function before opening up a topic. I've been here under a few different profiles for a few years and I have to say that I still rather enjoy seeing new conversation on old topics. Why can't a new group of people have a conversation on the boards about something that a longer residing group of people have already have? I consider it to be like perusing profiles. If you don't like a profile, move on. Same with the boards. If you don't like the topic because you're tired of hearing about it, then move on. No one is forcing you to partake in the discussion. Not everyone is tired of hearing about it and there's no reason to knock down the OP because of it. Sometimes I feel like I want to hold out my hand and help the OP up off the floor and tell them to never mind the roomful o'cranky.
