I can not express how important it is for us women to get our annual pap smear test and mammogram- it could be the difference between life or death. I have an enlarged uterus and fibroids, could the enlarged uterus be from the fibroids? I have to schedule my ultrasound for a time soon..I don't have any pain with them and my doctor says they appear very small but wants them removed once the ultrasound is complete..is it a painful procedure? It seems like I fix one problem and have yet another....I am thankful, it could always be worse..

While it's important to have these tests done fibroids are very common and nothing life-threatening. In fact most times they are left alone unless they are causing a problem due to size, pain or could interfere with pregnancy.

If he says they are very small I don't see how they would be causing an enlarged uterus but maybe that's what the ultrasound is for to determine that or if something else is going on.

I have some but never been removed since they aren't an issue so can't say whether it's a painful procedure or not.

The gynecologist sees more of me than my old man does ok maybe not THAT much but geesh...i'm sick of all the poking and probing ....once i get the ultrasound back, it should tell me more..

I've had fibroids removed and it wasn't painful...maybe a little cramping afterwards but it wasn't that bad...a couple tylenol and a day of rest and I was fine. I still have them but most of the time they don't cause me any problems except during my menstrual cycle when they cause me to cramp up. When I was younger though they were severe to the point I was in pain everytime I had sex, thus the removal procedure.

I wouldn't worry so much about them though. Just give yourself a day to recover.

Just think of the twat doc as a free jiggalo. It makes visits easier for me. :)
I've never had fibroids, but I have had other procedures and there was nothing more than some discomfort for about a week and just had to wear maxi-pads until everything was healed. In the meantime, there was lower-abdominal rest, the follow-up check-up, and everything was back to normal.

there is no reason to remove fibroids unless they are causing heavy bleeding, cramps, or fertility problems. so you should get a second opinion if you don't think you are ready for surgery. they can be removed surgically, myomectomy, or they can be killed by embolization, clotting the blood vessels that feed them.

They aren't giving me any pain during intercourse, my menstrual or anything like that..just the enlarged uterus has me concerned...I have to schedule my ultrasound for next week to find out for sure but I am against surgery unless it's absolutely necessary.

ask your doc why he wants to remove them? my guess is, since you have no problems with them, he wants the money from the surgery.

Are the fibriods on the outside or inside of your uterus ? That would make a bit of a difference. Mine sits proudly atop my uterus, where it has been for at least 10 years. No problems, no need for surgery or intervention. I did have a comlete chemical induced menopause, so painful/irregular periods are not an issue, nor bleeding.

If they are on the inside of your uterus, that could be the cause of the enlarged uterus and often times they do need to be removed if you are having symptoms, which it does not appear you are having. My advice is don't have the surgery without a 2nd opinion. The medical field is quite fond of yanking out we woman folks parts or to mess around with them in the wink of an eye.

If you have any reservation or doubts whatsoever, there is no reason why you can't obtain your records and get a second opinion. Personally, I think a second opinion is never a bad idea when facing a potential surgery. If you have your pap smear results and any related bloodwork/ultrasound results etc. you should not have to subject yourself to further "prodding and poking"-- most physicians will want to just see your test results at the very least.

Good advice hausboy and I'm glad I did just that. My smear test came back as inconclusive, or so the doctor said. 'come back in a year' he told me and wasn't at all happy when I asked to see my results.
My results actually showed that I had CIN 2 (changing cells at 2nd level) and the colposcopy that I then insisted on having, showed I had rapidly changing cells.
I am in the UK and so go under the NHS. Because the NHS are drastically trying to cut costs, doctors may avoid telling you the full truth about something. If your English, if your on the NHS and if you have a smear test, definitely get your results posted to you.

Jersey, I hope you get yourself sorted out and that its nothing more than a fibroid. Fibroids can be removed quite easily if they are troublesome. So long as your doctor doesn't suggest ripping your womb out when its nothing more than fibroids. If he does then I strongly recommend you get a second opinion from an endocrinologist.
