FR--- Re: Norplant - you do realize that there can be a lot of unpleasant side effects from that, right? Reminds me of the times where poor women were involuntarily sterilized, often for no other reason that they were poor. If you go the Norplant route, you should sterilize the guys who scatter children far and wide. After all, that can be reversed, right?

I do enjoy seeing so much advice from people that dont' have a clue about the peoples lives they are giving advice to. My suggestion come down out of your ivory tower and go live a day, week, month in their shoes. I think you might come away with a different opinion

You folks seem to think that it's just liberals on assistance. I have news for you. It isn't. Not by a LONG shot. I don't think it is being oversensitive, I think it is just asking for clarity. I have received countless messages on here that were not meant for me, but when it is addressed to the wrong party it tends to be confusing. It's really not that difficult, which is why it does irritate me.

The cost in 1968 dollars was reported to be around 5 g's , which was a sizable cost in that day and age. I personally wish this procedure had become more "standard" and insurable, think of all the problems we could solve if every 13 year old boy got this done. Sterilely, Some Knucklehead in NJ

Amen! Where I live it is most definitely the hillbilly contingent that is popping out the babies as fast as they can. My office is in a building that also has on the 3rd floor some kind of program for single parents and/or welfare assistance. On the 1st Tuesday of the month they come for some kind of meeting and I see the congregation of vehicles and I see more bumper stickers that say Bush or "NObama" or some other redneck bullshit than I can count. Sorry but here in Maine, the GOP definitely owns the public assistance factor. All you have to do is look at the voting demographic and see that the smaller less educated lower income towns always vote republican. That is just a fact.

~FR~ (Sorry RML, but I am replying to several people at once) Anybody who thinks people on welfare have children just for the increased benefits have obviously never been on welfare. Here in socialist Ontario the difference between a single person and a single person with a child is around $250 a month. If you can raise a child for less than $250 a month then power to you, but I couldn't. Yes having a kid raises the amount of your welfare payment, but not by more than it costs to feed, clothe and house a child...and the more you have, the less the increase for each one, so rather than making more money, you get progressively further behind.

I'm white as the day is long and My dad never saw indoor plumbing until he was 13 or had electricity till he was in HS and I will second that. As for walking in someone's shoes. Does living out of the back of a '72 Torino and working on a travelling heavy construction crew while getting $ to go back to school count?
