Re: Norplant - you do realize that there can be a lot of unpleasant side effects from that, right?  Reminds me of the times where poor women were involuntarily sterilized, often for no other reason that they were poor.

If you go the Norplant route, you should sterilize the guys who scatter children far and wide.  After all, that can be reversed, right?

I'm assuming that you are mistakenly responding to me in a reply to someone else since I have not endorsed Norplant.

I do enjoy seeing so much advice from people that dont' have a clue about the peoples lives they are giving advice to. My suggestion come down out of your ivory tower and go live a day, week, month in their shoes. I think you might come away with a different opinion

Have I entered a parallel universe?

Does anyone here know how to use the reply and quote buttons?

If you are actually replying to me explain what you think my opinion is, because I don't recall giving any advice to anyone.

Thorny:  You should add being a lesbian to your list of why women were sterilized.

RML:  FR stands for "fast reply" and makes it clear that the "reply to" is not correct.

mnottertail -> RE: Public Housing and the Damage Done (11/22/2010 12:33:20 PM)

He is horridly oversensitive to that, I wish they would get get rid of the in reply to box altogether.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Public Housing and the Damage Done (11/22/2010 12:44:21 PM)

But how can you tell all those good conservative christian "Go forth and multiply" baby machines that they can't have any more until they can afford them?

You folks seem to think that it's just liberals on assistance. I have news for you. It isn't. Not by a LONG shot. Around here, they're squirting out little uneducated republicans as fast as they can.

I'm aware of that, but I have never understood it because it takes only seconds more to reply to the person you are addressing.

No offense intended to you Thorn.

Why?

I would like to know that a reply to me is being made to me.

I don't think it is being oversensitive, I think it is just asking for clarity.

I have received countless messages on here that were not meant for me, but when it is addressed to the wrong party it tends to be confusing.

It's really not that difficult, which is why it does irritate me.

thorn, I remember reading in Life magazine back in 1968 about miniature valves that could be implanted in the man's vas defrons.  The cost in 1968 dollars was reported to be around 5 g's , which was a sizable cost in that day and age.  I personally wish this procedure had become more "standard" and insurable, think of all the problems we could solve if every 13 year old boy got this done.

Read it. If it sounds like you respond. I don't think if you read it that you will think it was meant for you. But sure, I will QUOTE it all the time so you aren't confused..sheesh

I know those shoes, YngBlk. They were held together with scotch tape, and I walked a long way to school in them, in the constant cold and rain of a Portland winter. Ivory tower? I just didn't stay poor. I've fallen all the way to the bottom as an adult as well, but re-enacting Monty Python is less important than some might think.

Now, if you have a good referral on the sociology and psychology of the multi-generational welfare culture, hook me up. I'm already familiar with the entitlement mentality, but I know that is just a facet. Sanyika Sakur's book didn't change my opinion of gang life one bit, but it did change how I looked at the problem.

Amen! Where I live it is most definitely the hillbilly contingent that is popping out the babies as fast as they can. My office is in a building that also has on the 3rd floor some kind of program for single parents and/or welfare assistance. On the 1st Tuesday of the month they come for some kind of meeting and I see the congregation of vehicles and I see more bumper stickers that say Bush or "NObama" or some other redneck bullshit than I can count. Sorry but here in Maine, the GOP definitely owns the public assistance factor. All you have to do is look at the voting demographic and see that the smaller less educated  lower income towns always vote republican. That is just a fact.

If you are serious, I will try and find you a couple titles.  (Once upon a time all of my books were in order, then I had a child.)

If you want to read them, I have no problem shipping them to you.

Otherwise, I am not going to bother with a search.

Arpig -> RE: Public Housing and the Damage Done (11/22/2010 10:09:58 PM)

~FR~ (Sorry RML, but I am replying to several people at once)

Anybody who thinks people on welfare have children just for the increased benefits have obviously never been on welfare. Here in socialist Ontario the difference between a single person and a single person with a child is around $250 a month. If you can raise a child for less than $250 a month then power to you, but I couldn't. Yes having a kid raises the amount of your welfare payment, but not by more than it costs to feed, clothe and house a child...and the more you have, the less the increase for each one, so rather than making more money, you get progressively further behind.

TheHeretic -> RE: Public Housing and the Damage Done (11/22/2010 10:24:40 PM)

Just title and author would be great, Aylee. Ebay can cover it from there.

Some might consider it racist for me to say this, Aynne, since trash comes in all colors, but when you come down to it, there's no trash quite like white trash.

American Dream: Three Women, Ten Kids, and a Nation's Drive to End Welfare.  Jason DeParle.  Viking, New York.  2004.

That one was the easiest to find, has case studies, political discussion, and looks back multiple generations.

I'm white as the day is long and My dad never saw indoor plumbing until he was 13 or had electricity till he was in HS and I will second that.

As for walking in someone's shoes. Does living out of the back of a '72 Torino and working on a travelling heavy construction crew while getting $ to go back to school count?

Jesus the world is falling apart but I admit, I kind of agree. Nothing quite like it indeed.
