I think the in favor and against list may be in reverse order. I find it unlikely that Iran, a country that executes gays, would vote against its own laws, while liberal countries without the death penalty like Iceland would vote for executing people its laws currently protect. It's easy to forget with recent gay rights successes in the west how many countries are still hostile or indifferent at best.

The lists are of countries in favour of/opposing the removal of the existing clause condemning execution on the grounds of sexuality, according to the link.

There's a clause in the UN Human Rights's paper that say's gay's should be protected from the death penalty just for being gay.The countrie's are in favor of REMOVING that clause from the U.N. are Iran or so on. The country's OPPOSED to removing the clause are the liberal countire's like Canada,America and so on.... So,take the list and reverse it if that make's it easier to understand.

I am alittle surprised to see that South Africa is for removing the protection clause for gays from the UN Human Rights Charter.I mean,after all,gay marriage is legal there.Yet,they vote for this foolish act.Does not make sense to me.

Wait, so there was a pre-existing clause in the United Nations Charter on Human Rights that bans the execution of homosexuals simply for being homosexual. It has finally been removed through a vote by a coalition of governments who execute gays for being gay despite the United Nations saying that was forbidden. Why should we care if a human rights rule that was never actually followed and enforced in the first place has been officially expunged from the global rules. It was de facto removed from the Charter a long time ago when various nations decided to ignore it and nobody brought them to task for it. If the UN cannot enforce its own rules, I just cannot bring myself to care if they get rid of said rules. The UN has just been one giant disappointment since its inception, this is just further proof of that.

I'm almsot at the point where the conservatives have been for years, of demanding that the UN begin justifying its existence or face defunding.

I'm disgusted by this removal of even symbolic protection. Unfortunately, it's going to take decades for cultures to change. Probably the fastest way is through education and poverty eradication. The weakness of the UN is frustrating, but we still need some international bodies of cooperation - UN, WTO, WHO, OIE, etc. Whether we built on the existing UN structure or started from scratch (a difficult undertaking), it's still important to have at least the semblance of cooperation, even if it's not everything we want it to be. P.S. - This dyke loves and agrees with Steve's sig.

I agree with this but not from a conservative viewpoint, which isn't unified when it comes to such issues. The issue of persecution of people for reasons of who they are, irrespective of whether it is ethnicity or sexual orientation is hardly an issue which has sprung up recently but has been developing for many years. That the UN has been so ineffective and even indifferent to so many of these issues is a significant factor in this development. With respect to various situations, such as that in Iran, Uganda, Malawi and other countries this decision is ill-timed and hardly appropriate.
