It's not incorrect advice.

It absolutely is, but you're not going to admit that and I'm not going to argue with someone who hasn't a clue what they're talking about, so "whatever".

Yeah it is. My job is cleaning up PC's. Firefox is more than capable of getting infections. You have fixed 20? I have fixed.. well hell.. who knows how many in 10 yrs of doing this... but trust me Firefox users are equally at risk.
20, isn't even a valid test.

And the above is why I love managing good techies; not only do they tell you you're a SweetieLuvvyDarling, but they can demonstrate precisely why you're a SweetieLuvvyDarling, and what percentage of a total SweetieLuvvyDarlingyou're currently being*

*and, in the case of one guy who used to work for me, point out your current state of SweetieLuvvyDarlingness on a chart which plots your degree of SweetieLuvvyDarlingness during the last 12 months – I kid you not. On the bright side, he was able to prove I was a 38% better manager than another guy he didn’t like.

So when you said: 'IE is as secure as Firefox' what you actually meant to say was 'IE is as secure as Firefox if you are running Vista or 7...' What about those people who are running XP? Is IE better for them, too? Or is it as secure as a hole in the head?

Firefox is a much safer internet browser than IE. Much safer. On saying that, what I didn't say, but meant to, is that Firefox is a much safer browser than IE especially if it is running a couple of the more well-known plugins - Adblock Plus, WOT and NoScript.

In the last year, I have cleaned maybe 20 odd PCs of malware and viruses. They all had one thing in common. That's right - Internet Explorer was the browser of choice. It's shit, really it is.

I prefer Firefox.

IE was giving MANY chances.... it may not be perfect- but it is the best.

Rap,  you ought to re-read post 22.

Is that really necessary?   Calling someone that name?

Good for you. Doesn't make it more secure though.

There is no "the best". They all have holes, they all have different usability ratings, they're all targeted at different rates, and they all take different times for their parent companies to patch (Firefox and Chrome being the worst BTW).

You should use whichever of them you want to; they're pretty much equal, so it's down to whichever one gives you the warmest, fuzziest feeling.

Just make sure a) you have all the latest updates, b) you run a virus checker with embedded protection and c) you don't do stupid things like open attachments blindly.

I didn't call anyone that name.

In the example I referred to, my employee referred to me in that fashion.

ETA: I've amended it. Just for you

Are you sure about updates?

Sometimes they seem like a waste.

Within the context of the post, he wasn't calling her that name, he was speaking in general terms.

This might sound odd.. but if I do not blow one hard drive a year- then I am not using my time well online.

Laptops now like $300.   So not the $2000.00 they were some years ago.

I am actually late on blowing this hard drive.... 2 years.... so I am on borrowed time.  ;-)

Did you seriously not understand the first time around?

It's a very odd way to interpret what I wrote. I assumed you were joking.

Anyway, I've edited it into sweetness and light now, just for you. Of course that post will make no sense to anyone else now, but WTF, it's worth it

Yes.  I thought you lobbed a personal attack against the young lady.

I must have skimmed too fast on the prior posts.

Better to ask- then to automatically go into a rage.   (IMO)

Hardware failures are not the same thing as security penetration.

I would have thought someone as keen on tinfoil hats as you would have been equally keen to make sure they were as protected as was humanly possible?

Do regular updates, seriously - you're just giving the crims* a head start otherwise

*or, in your case, the blokes in the black helicopters

If automatic rage is your reaction to someone posting an insult to someone else (even though it wasn't) then it's time to step away from the keyboard.

PA
It doesnt cost anything to update, depending on what kind of antivirus program you have. Some you have to buy the newest version each year but there are acceptable free ones.
You can manage the time, it doesnt usually take long.
It is worth the hassle of getting a virus. They suck.
The updates are necessary to catch the newer viruses.

Rap,

No amount of worry will stop a sharp hacker, virus, etc.,  I can pay more attention to updates.. but I wont lose sleep on it.  If it all crashes- I will get out my other computer and use that... and then buy a new one.   True I don't want it to come to that... but there can reach a point of worry saturation.

...work smarter not harder-   a tough nut to crack for sure.

My house and life are full of broken stuff.... so ... it would hardly be noticed...

So you leave your house & car unlocked at all times then?

Coz that's the equivalent.

Actually, it’s worse than that; if you don't keep your security (OS as well as browser) up to date, you're potentially handing control of your machine over to someone(s) else, and those people may use it for charming little things like DDOS attacks (what if Alex's site was brought down by you? How would you live with yourself?), or remote hacking people's machines to get their financial details, so they lose money, or worst of all for propagating kiddie porn or suchlike*, all without your knowledge.

It's a really, really good idea to do regular updates. Seriously.

*The scumbags that do this kind of thing try to set up "virtual networks" of hacked machines so it can't be traced back to them. Don't let them – keep your machine as secure as possible.
