Brain -> 92% of Afghan men in Kandahar and Helmand don't know about the 9/11 attacks (11/28/2010 10:32:36 PM)

I like this guy Cenk from the Young Turks.

We've got no business in Afghanistan and we’ve got no business holding up the Start treaty.

This was brought up in an earlier thread, I think by pahunk.

They're kinda clueless then.

"Oh look, the Americans are bombing us."

"Why did they start doing that again?"

"Um. I don't know. Because they're infidels?"

I wonder if they genuinely don't know that America was attacked by Muslim extremists or if they just didn't recognize questions about "nine-eleven" or "world trade center" or other specifics.

Perhaps it is just that they do not have cable and thus no access to faux news

Kandahar is the second-largest city in Afghanistan. It has its own airport. We're not talking about nomads on the fringe of civilization here.

Also isn't Fox on basic TV anyway? XD

Exactly!

and just like a lot of Americans believe what their government tell them, so do the Afghans who are being told that this is a war against Islam. Unlike Americans, they don't have the same sort of resources we have to do their research.

This is Kandahar: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kandahar

It has its own airport and university, as well as access to local and foreign television.

If it is true that they live in a propaganda bubble, that's incredibly sad, but I still find it incredible that residents of a modern city in a Muslim country can be completely unaware of such a pivotal event in Muslim-western relations.

Osama needs to step up his PR if he pulls off the coup of the century and only 8% of the population has even heard of it.

Moonhead -> RE: 92% of Afghan men in Kandahar and Helmand don't know about the 9/11 attacks (11/29/2010 9:27:18 AM)

There's no pleasing some people: you lot were bitching your heads off when it appeared that the Palestinians had heard about it back in '01...

luckydawg -> RE: 92% of Afghan men in Kandahar and Helmand don't know about the 9/11 attacks (11/29/2010 9:30:25 AM)

Why the snarky lies Moonhead.

Quite a few people wree upset at the Pictures of some (not all) Palestinians CELEBRATING the event.

Not sure what 'my lot' is but that's sort of my point...when 9/11 happened, the Taliban was in power. You'd think that they wouldn't be covering up such a spectacular attack on the Great Satan.

Moonhead -> RE: 92% of Afghan men in Kandahar and Helmand don't know about the 9/11 attacks (11/29/2010 9:39:01 AM)

The Taliban and the government of Afghanistan aren't really on talking terms. That's a big part of the reason you're occupying the country in the first place, is it not?

I would bet Elisabella hit the nail on the head here.

I remember watching an Oprah show when she asked the predominantly white audience if they had heard of "the Middle Passage". I knew about the slave trade but wasn't familiar with that term at the time myself. I'm not sure if Oprah thought the aud. didn't know much about the trade itself.

Yeah it's actually the main reason as far as I understand. Not sure what that has to do with the topic of awareness of 9/11, it's not like a regime change leads to amnesia in 92% of the population.

Moonhead -> RE: 92% of Afghan men in Kandahar and Helmand don't know about the 9/11 attacks (11/29/2010 9:47:54 AM)

Are you sure? The last regime change you guys had led to huge chunks of the population forgetting that they'd been cheering for everything the Kenyan's doing back when it was a Republican with a fake accent doing that shit.

So you're going with "they're just stupid" then?

Moonhead -> RE: 92% of Afghan men in Kandahar and Helmand don't know about the 9/11 attacks (11/29/2010 10:19:41 AM)

That'd be a working explanation, wouldn't it?

SuzanneKneeling -> RE: 92% of Afghan men in Kandahar and Helmand don't know about the 9/11 attacks (11/29/2010 10:23:10 AM)

I don't know... which do you people think is more shocking?  That 92% of men in Kandahar don't recognize "9/11"...

Or that 70% of the public in an informational backwater hellhole called the United States didn't know who had pulled off the worst attack ever on its soil fully two years after the event?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A32862-2003Sep5?language=printer

Or that in early 2006, our service men and women risking their lives in Iraq were so miserably misled about why they were there:

http://www.zogby.com/news/readnews.cfm?ID=1075

quote:

While 85% said the U.S. mission is mainly "to retaliate for Saddam's role in the 9-11 attacks," 77% said they also believe the main or a major reason for the war was "to stop Saddam from protecting al Qaeda in Iraq."

It seems that ignorance and stupidity are equal opportunity disabilities that know no national boundaries.

Well if we're going by numbers, 92>69, but I'm leaning toward the American ignorance being worse because I'm a cultural supremacist who believes there's absolutely no excuse for that sort of ignorance in the US.

In which case, I should apologise for insinuating you might be a neocon. I beg your pardon.
